  1. Showcase of two of the best 2B in the AL tonight. Let's see if Dozier makes a statement. When can we expect to see Arcia back? Know he doesn't provide much relief in CF, but at least he is an outfielder.
  2. Once Willingham and Arcia are back, I would think that Collabello will become a bench bat, along with Parmalee. Kubel and Pinto will be the main DHs - with Pinto getting one to two starts per week behind the plate, allowing Collabello or Parmalee a start or two per week. The looming question is what to do with Hicks when Fuld returns. Will they continue to throw Hicks out there - or will Fuld get the starting CF spot? Can't see Hicks sitting on the bench. If he isn't starting - he will likely get sent to Rochester for an infielder.
  3. Don't understand all the complaining. The Twins made the obvious move in bringing up Guerrier and sending down Darnell, who needs to be back in the Red Wings rotation. The future moves are set - Hicks for Hermann, Arcia for a reliever. We won't see Parmalee unless Colabello implodes. Guerrier will only be around if he can get guys out. If he can't, he will be gone. He is getting a shot, but will be on a short leash.
  4. A team at the All Star Break that is within 3 games of a wild card may make some bold moves to improve the club - to include bringing up their best prospect. Could happen - but not unless Buxton gets to AA soon and rakes there.
  5. We have not seen the last of Parmalee with the big club. I fear that Colabello will fade, leaving a spot available for Parmalee. I do think he can hit at the major league level, with time. Like Dozier and Plouffe before him - he needs to continue to mature. The main difference between Dozier/Plouffe and Parmalee is that the former filled holes that had few other options. The Twins had little choice but to play Plouffe and Dozier everyday. It appears that the exposure they have gotten has paid off. The latter, Parmalee, has had to compete for playing time since day one. As a result, he has only had sporadic stretches in the line up. If Colabello can not keep pace and Willingham is a long term DL case, Parmalee is the most obvious person to bring up to the big club.
  6. Nunez for Florimon as soon as Nunez is healthy. Willingham for Hermann. A pitcher will have to go down, likely Tonkin for Arcia. The big question is who is going to get at bats? Would be disappointed to see Pinto's at bats drop, but think it is inevitable with Hermann going down. Expect to see Joe get a few more days off once Willingham and Arcia are back. Kubel will likely sit more against lefties. I think Hicks will get one more shot once Fuld's bat cools off. Don't see any reason to send him down. Really don't see any moves in the rotation until June. One of the starters will likely have a DL stint, which will give Meyer, Johnson or May a shot.
  7. Taking quality at bats is part of what sustains an offense and destabilizes opposing pitching. The lack of options out of the bullpen for the Rays late on Wednesday carried over to Thursday. Having more men on base creates more opportunities to score, which in turn wears down a pitching staff. The approach the Twins are taking is going to be critical to their competitiveness for the entire season. The concern I have is whether Arcia and Willingham will undermine this approach when they return. Their very high strikeout rates could be a detriment. Losing Pinto's walks in favor of Arcia's strikeouts could be a negative.
  8. After taking 2 of 3 from Tampa - doing the same against the Tigers would definitely give this team some mojo, maybe short lived, but definitely a reason for fans to come to the park and check out this club.
  9. So when can we start critiquing the off season investments in starting pitching? End of April?, End of May?
  10. Yes, small sample size for Bartlett, but he nearly cost us the game yesterday with the misplay of Kipnis' double. Likewise he couldn't put the ball in play with a runner at third. These are the reasons you have a veteran on the roster - to make the fundamental plays. I expect he has through April to establish himself.
  11. How is it possible to be optimistic after being 0-2 against the team they will likely battle for last place? The losses were the result of elements we considered a team strength, but the performance of those who we were concerned about has been positive. Perkins had a bad day and Mauer and Dozier are off to slow starts. We have confidence they will bounce back. Meanwhile, Suzuki, Plouffe, Kubel and Hicks have been impressive. I'm just glad it's baseball season and we are talking about games and actual player performance, bring on game 3.
  12. Fivethirtyeight.com - Nate Silver's new website and its sports page is a great addition to the world of data analytics in sports for the serious fan. Today they posted this article about umpire biases in three ball or two strike counts, as well as pitches right after a strike. They prove that on borderline pitches, umpires favor making the call to keep the at bat going, rather than calling a third strike or fourth ball. The analysis is fascinating, however, I feel the story statistically confirms what most passionate baseball fans already know, which is that there is a built in bias in the game to see the ball put in play. Baseball players will largely recognize that on 3-0 counts, the umpire is going to widen the strike zone in favor of getting the ball put in play. The game counts on the ball getting hit and fielded, and the umpire biases his calls to favor this outcome. The same holds true for the converse. In 0-2 counts, the umpire is going to give the benefit to the hitter. Removing this unspoken element of the game by using electronic methods would have a deep and profound impact, quite possibly negative. What do you all think?
  13. As someone who travels for work, MLB.tv will be fantastic. I will no longer be relegated to follow the games on gameday. So great to see that MLB recognizes how ridiculous it is to pay for MLB baseball for my home and not have the opportunity to watch it on the road. What is unfortunate is that they are not promoting this more readily to their subscribers. I had been considering buying MLB.tv and dropping my Directv package, but decided to google whether there was a way to link the accounts and low and behold they had just done so for 2014. I am sure there are many who are paying for both.
  14. I just discovered that MLB.tv is included in your cable/satellite MLB package, like MLB extra innings. Here's the link on how to connect your mlb.com account to your cable/satellite provider. https://secure.mlb.com/tv/activate/
  15. I'm not dead yet - said Josh Willingham as he rounds the bases for his first hit and homerun in a millennium.
  16. 23 LOB and 0 runs through 7. I sure hope they are saving all their hits for the regular season.
  17. People are getting this upset about the 25th roster spot. So who else do/did we have out there to be a super utility guy, who will be the cornerstone of the team's resurgence? Presley, Bernier, Mastrionani? Not sure any are significant improvements. Bartlett is a low risk move to have a versatile veteran presence on the roster. If he doesn't work out - then they send him away at little or no cost. It's a 162 game season, let's see how it plays out.
  18. I am not sure if it exciting or depressing to think that a guy who hit below .200 last year is being relied on to be a key bat for this year's team. Besides Mauer, he is the only guy who has shown any signs of life at the plate. Let's hope it translates when the games count. A successful year from him will be the main reason to flip on the TV or radio every night this summer. I am hoping for the best.
  19. With regards to Parmalee and Pressly - classic case of addition by subtraction. Neither are in the long term plans and they do not bring any added value to the clubhouse. Kubel and Bartlett - Both are a veteran presence well steeped in the Twin's way of doing things. Along with Mauer, they can show the young guys what it takes to succeed in the majors. Having said that - both of the veterans need to produce. Not doing so would mean bringing in someone from the minors or via trade. Losing them would not require taking a bit hit financially. In the short term - this is about reestablishing a culture and commitment to success in this organization.
  20. Unprecedented losing? You clearly were not around during the waning years of the Griffith dynasty. This franchise has been competitive for the better half of the last 25 years. We have seen futility before and we will see it again - but what is different now is that we have seen success and we like it. Our disappointment has more to do with our high expectations for what has become Minnesota's most successful sports franchise - (yes the bar is low). The real disappointment this year is that the future remains on hold. I think our attitudes would have been much better if the likes of Sano and Rosario were waiting in the wings - certain to make their debuts this season. As it is - with the exception of Alex Meyer - there is little on the short term horizon to be overly excited about. So, let's adjust our expectations and look forward to a season with Kyle Gibson as a full time starter and an improved rotation, Oswaldo Arcia and Aaron Hicks hopefully taking the next step forward, and the debut of the hardest throwing starter since Scott Erickson - Alex Meyer. Most important and above all let's enjoy watching Joe Mauer hit every day.
  21. Let the Kyle Gibson era begin!
  22. Mauer as the leadoff makes zero sense. He has to be in a place to drive in runs. He is the only guy on the club who makes consistent contact.
  23. How many times will Joe Mauer be stranded at second base this season. Kubel - K, Willingham pop out. Mauer has to hit third - doesn't he? - if we are ever going to get any runs.
  24. In retrospect, the loss of Sano and Rosario could really hurt the team this year. It is reasonable to assume both would have gotten major league time this year to spark the offense. As it pans out, the team may need to look elsewhere - possibly dealing a reliever and a prospect to get what they need. Could they deal Kepler and Burton for a proven MLB hitter?
  25. So, Scott Diamond is . . . put in the bullpen waived asked to slip in the shower and sprain his ankle.
