  1. I do hope he clears waivers and the Twins can send him down. I think the Twins would benefit from seeing whether he can make adjustments and reemerge. The fact that the guy had success with the Phils and he is still so young, there should be reason to hope he can still turn it around. Could a conversion to a reliever be an option?
  2. It looked like his shoulder was bothering him, maybe it was his elbow - looked like he tweaked his knee walking to the dugout. Some time on the DL, a couple of rehab starts and who knows he might be ready when one of our pitchers inevitably come up hurt in May.
  3. Should have asked where people live - assumes that all who visit are from MN.
  4. Why all the handholding? If he is a major leaguer, he needs to start playing with confidence and smarts now. We know he has the baseball IQ, he needs to play with confidence and resolve. There is little to gain from a stint at AAA.
  5. Don't you want Hicks to step up grab the CF job by the throat? Anything short of that and you have to believe that he is on the outside looking in on their long term plans. With Buxton and potentially Rosario no more than a year away, he has to prove he is a major league player now. If he doesn't make the club, he better rake in AAA and be up no later than June. Anything less and it may be time to start looking elsewhere.
  6. The more I look at the current 40 man roster and the free agent signings this season, the more I am convinced that the team is trying to compete - but are really expecting the youth movement to start in earnest after this year. They have players without options that can fill roles, providing more time for those that do to continue to develop. The question is when they will flip the switch - June, August, September or not until next season for players like Meyer, Gibson, May and Sano. I have a hard time believing that they are going to waive players like Parmalee, Worley, Diamond and Deduno without giving them one more hard look. In the meantime, I would not be surprised if they make an effort to get some of our prospects playing together in the minors - Buxton, Sano, Rosario in New Britain. Meyer, May, Gibson, Gilmartin in AAA. Get these guys playing like a team.
  7. Is it clear that the Twins FA signings this past season reflect a long term strategy of trying to effectively maximize the long term impact of their highest prospects? Starting Meyer's clock too soon by having him spend a significant time with the ML club this year would undermine our long term goal of having Meyer, Buxton, Sano and the remaining core peaking at about the same time and under control for as much time as possible. While I think he will make his debut this year - it is hard to imagine it won't be until after Gibson and others get chances ahead of him. I would be hard pressed to see him make more than a handful of starts with an innings limit, with most coming in Late-June - Early August - before getting shut down.
  8. Hindsight is always 20/20. Sure we can second guess all day long whether we overpaid for Nolasco. I would rather have this conversation in May when we can look at Nolasco's and Garza's numbers.
  9. OK, it was a dumb question. Last year everyone got better deals. http://www.fangraphs.com/blogs/qualifying-offer-deadline-a-rundown/ But you have to wonder if Morales, Drew and Cruz will make out better.
  10. Has anyone done the analysis about whether players who decline qualifying offers are getting significantly better deals on the free agent market?
  11. Have to include Kingman's dome ball and the thunderstorm game vs. the Angels that tore a hole in the roof and after the storm passed, Ron Davis promptly blew the save. Unique dome moments
  12. The plot thickens about catcher for next year. Seems like they have to find a veteran and am wondering now if it will go beyond the free agent market to a possible trade to get a reliable back up, who could take on the regular catching duties if Pinto is not able to carry the load. Not sure John Buck fits the bill anymore.

  14. Now that the Winter Meetings are behind us, we can all finally get on with our holiday shopping. Aside from season tickets or the 2014 Twins Prospect Handbook, what are some great gifts for the passionate Twins or baseball fan. Books, videos, collectibles, etc. What would you give the Twins' fan who has everything?
  15. The posting fee limit is not finalized. While it looks like 20M is the number, it is not clear how a team will be selected with multiple teams willing to post the max. It is possible that the player will get to choose the team.
  16. Totally agree. Big first basemen do not age well in the majors and I think it is possible Prince's best years are behind him. The Tigers just unloaded what was likely to be a long term albatross from around their neck - and the Rangers just committed to pay a high salary for a guy whose value will only decline.
  17. I thought that a FA signing for 1B (my personal fav was Youklis) would bring a veteran presence into the locker room. I now think that it makes sense to do the same at catcher. Doumit should become a near full time DH, with spot starts at C and RF. I would also suspect that Doumit will be on the trading block sooner, rather than later. With Doumit on the way out, the Twins might be willing to lock down Willingham for another 2 years - to play left and eventually DH full time once Hicks is ready to lock down an outfield spot permanently.
  18. It was likely that the next competitive lineup for the Twins was going to have Mauer at 1B and/or DH. I expect the team will consider a veteran option (AJ?) to allow Pinto to mature into the position. AJ strikes me as a player who could be a positive addition to a clubhouse full of very talented, but not MLB savvy players.
  19. So go drop 100M over 5 years on a guy right now. Sure he wins 20 for a .500 team next year, then sees his productivity wane when Sano, Buxton, et al are peaking. So when the team really needs to invest in a top arm, we have 20M a year wrapped up in a has been.
  20. Prospects are not a financial risk. You need to invest when the potential return is greatest. It is not that we should not sign long term deals with FAs, but that we need to make sure that the years of greatest productivity are when the rest of the team is ready to compete for a title.
  21. I think FA starting pitcher signings are fraught with risk and intricacies that are far more complicated than simply dropping a bundle on the best available arm as a shortcut. The key is aligning a player's peak ability with the development of the rest of the team. It makes no sense to sign a high dollar starter if the rest of the lineup is not positioned to win. Many pitchers have such a limited window of productivity, that an ill-timed investment could leave many teams holding the bag on a guy who is past his prime when the rest of the team is ready for primetime. It is for this reason that it makes way more sense to develop within the system and add a key piece at the exact right time - namely at the trade deadline when the team is competitive or at a point when the team is clearly the dominant team in the division. See Tigers for insight here.
  22. What about Kevin Youklis as a potential free agent candidate to play both 1st and 3rd? Yes he is an injury risk - but he is a veteran presence, could fill a short term need at both positions, would be great with the young players and should come fairly inexpensively. Would love to see his influence on Sano.
  23. I am struck by the Cardinals and Red Sox lineups and the balance from 1-9, compared to the reliance on star power in Detroit and Los Angeles. The injuries to Hanley Ramirez and Cabrera, and Fielder's lack of productivity pretty much doomed these teams to failure in the LCS. Meanwhile the Red Sox and Cardinals persevered relying on a different star every night. It seems those who are looking for the big free agent signing should beware of what happens when too much salary is wrapped up in one or two players.
  24. David McCarty.
