  1. I see a lot of sound reason for hope. The rotation has to be fixed without creating a lot of collateral damage to the BP and lineup. Ryan will have money to work with in the offseason, but they'll really need some gambles to pay off big in order to create a rotation that can lead the team to real success. I'm anxious to see if Baker gets an offer. Do they acquire someone in a trade (I really think Willingham is the only player on the team that would bring a proven starter in a trade)? Does one minor leaguer (Wimmers, Hendricks, Gibson, Bromberg) become a reliable regular in the 2013 rotation? Can the Blackburn-by-default slot in the rotation perform at a 10-10, 4.50 level or will we get a 2-10, 6.50 to weigh us down? Maybe Todd G is right. It is harder to try to win. Maybe they should just give up.
  2. I've been thinking Rob Deer for awhile now. I thought I was the only one.
  3. "Twins need to get some runners on base in front of him, though" Are you kidding? He hits one out like every single time he comes up with bases empty. They should bat him lead-off so they can start every game up 1-0. He'd project to like 100 hrs on the season with my lead-off plan. Seems like a rock solid theory with no possible holes. Except home games when the oppostion gets to bat first.
  4. I hope he's for real. We had a quiver full of affordable middle rotation guys a few years back (Perkins, Duensing, Blackburn, Pavano, Slowey) but they're a rare commodity right now. Everyone complained about the missing ace when 1-5 were all strong, not dominant. However, no production from Baker and Liriano led to a full staff meltdown. Today, a decent #3 starter feels like a legimate bright spot.
  5. I would appreciate it if you'd list positions. I know where some of the guys play, but it would be nice to have that info in the article. Thanks for writing!
  6. Fun thread, but almost none of the responses attempt to answer the question. I expect Willingham would bring a higher return in a trade than any other player on the roster. A:he's healthy B:good track record C: currently producing at a high level D:great contract status i would hate to see him go, but if you want to use trades to rebuild, he is exactly the player you need to swallow hard and trade away. Consider too E:as a free agent, all they have invested in him is this year's salary. to sign Willingham, pay him for a few months and flip the modest investment for a good prospect could be a shrewd way to add some needed talent. What sort of starter might Willingham realistically fetch in a trade?
  7. I think Willingham will be the most valuable outfield trading chip. I hate watching a losing team have to dump its most valuable assets. I sure wish Benson was pushing these guys rather than having his current season. ETA on Hicks at this point?
  8. It would create a role whereby the first pitcher by rule, could not earn a W. However, the second pitcher would not need the requisite 5 innings to earn a W. this is a fun idea. Let's do it! Maybe we could bring back Zumaya next year and use him to record just the first out of each series!
  9. It may be good news if an injury explains this year's decline in production. Benson should be instilling hope for a better 2013 for the MLB team, not falling back down the ladder.
  10. Marquis set the bar low enough that I'll be really happy to see moderate success. I think my expectations are similar to last year's Brian Dinkleman call-up. It's good to see that a decent guy who's worked hard gets to realize a dream. Some good gets to come from a bunch of bad. Go Cole! Let's see a quality start!
  11. LOVE AJ through and through. I cheer for him every chance I get. The guy is a pest, and a competitor and he gave his all in a Twins uni just like he does in a Chisox uni. He even helped the team by being traded for good returns at an opportune time. He's said in the press that he'd be favorable to return to MN in the future. I'd take him back in a heartbeat. I might not want to rent a house from him...
  12. I think Barks is sending a mixed message. By spelling ButerABLE, rather than BuTERRIBLE, I'm inclined to believe he just might be ABLE to hit .360 while leading the league in saves. So you're telling me there's a chance...
  13. I'd make the call if I were Terry Ryan. Serious contenders don't necessarily have innings to throw at a high risk guy like Oswalt. Twins have money and innings. If Oswalt isn't signed by a contender, maybe he would come here to prove he's still got it for a couple months in hopes of getting traded to a viable contender. For Twins, that would be turning a little payroll and a handful of meaningless innings into a prospect or two. May put butts in seats along the way as well.
  14. Drew is batting .350! I better type fast before he slips below .180.
  15. Disappointing to see Benson falter right when he should be stepping into position with the bug club.
  16. I don't see them trying to "send a message" or crack down on underperformers by demoting Valencia. I think they're just trying to help him get right. If he is reasonably in control of his game, he should hit .275 with 15 hr and 75 RBI. He is nowhere near that level of play right now, but he has the upside of a solid, middle of the road starter. Most of the other 3B options with the team (@ the upper levels) don't project as starters. Get him right or try to develop Plouffe as a 3rd baseman.
  17. Spideyo nailed it. Personally, the thought of Inge taking starts from anyone one the current roster makes me throw up in my mouth a little. His career line .234/.304/.387 is bad enough, but it has been in decline. In 2011, it was .197/.265/.283. By comparison, Valencia's line was .246/.294/.383 If Valencia is on the bubble after his 2011 and poor 2012 start, Inge clearly isn't an MLB caliber player anymore.
  18. Were the victims Yankees fans? That's the only prejudice I'll allow to color my take on this story.
  19. I don't feel entitled to manage a team. I don't feel entitled to get the players I want. That restrains me from a lot of negativity. As a fan, I recognize I am an observer. I can be disappointed in my team, but I gotta love 'em. If they "jump the shark" (ala vikings acquiring Favre) I'll stop being a fan. So far, the worst things they've done are pretty bearable. I can cheer for just about any Twins player of the last 20 years. I can also rip on them, but my harshest tone is good-natured. I guess that makes me a ten. My intensity, however, isn't a ten. When they are playing poorly, I'll take my kids to the park or go fishing. I'll give them my attention again soon enough.
  20. Kubel woulda caught that or at least blow out a knee trying! ...and Carroll is starting to win my heart. W'ham too!
  21. Like Thrylos, I have been thinking of Luke Hughes comparisons. We see some good numbers and want to project this automatic major league success. Many of us did it with Hughes and Plouffe last year and will do it with Dozier this year. Once we watch a AA player struggle with the transition to mlb, we write 'em off and look at the next guy as a better option. In reality, Valencia, Plouffe, Revere, Hughes, Benson and Parmelee are all likely several steps more ready to break through and have a big impact, but that thought process isn't as fun when we watched them lose 99 together.
  22. Pretty sure John just means Perkins is signable for less today with Capps here than he would be today if he were the 2012 projected closer. John's identifying a silver lining. FlsPrpht is identifying the cloud within the lining. IMO, Capps seems like a high quality man whose pitching ceiling is "good to very good" ...and his floor is "real ugly." I'd probably like him a lot in Guerrier-type role. I don't feel like him closing. It is cool if his presence allowed the Twins to secure Perkins on a more team-friendly deal. That's an interesting angle.
  23. I think a lot of fans misunderstand the theory behind "pitch to contact." When you listen to a full explanation, it is really just preaching balance. When you need a strikeout, pitch to strike'm out. When bases are empty, try to induce weak contact early in the counts. It's all a matter of pitching situationally. If the Twin's approach is so unbalanced that it could potentially harm Nolan Ryan's career, how did Santana manage his strikeout rate? Strikeouts are very valuable, but they are not the only valuable outs and in certain situations, they are not the most valuable outs. For example, a double play ball trumps a strikeout. A quick out has more value when a pitcher can't go deep. The term "pitch to contact" really came to light when Liriano was wearing out early due to very high pitch counts. A few one or two pitch ground outs and pop outs would have more value in that circumstance than the seven and eight pitch strike outs that they would replace. However, put a runner in scoring position and the situation calls for a strikeout. Now, you spare no bullets.
