The raiders hired the first black head coach in the modern nfl in 1989. They were coming off an 8-9 record last season. They’ve had more minority coaches than any other team. Doubt they’d care to do that. I think in the raiders case, Jim Davis wasn’t going to let another popular interim coach walk out the door after what happened with Jim tomsula
As far as the patriots, Kraft apparently had the plan to develop him as a head coach. Since 2019. That’s a crazy long time to work on good PR that nobody really cares about anyway since it’s 2025.
It’s entirely possible that these two guys, who had very thin resumes to begin with, were evaluated by the FO and found to be in over their heads. Happens all the time.
I’d bet most current head coaches had previous OC/DC/assistant HC experience at least for a couple seasons before being hired as head coach.
