Not having pitchers bat would be like saying every basketball team only has 4 players who can cross half court, while one player on each team stays on offense and one stays on defense
-
I personally love the game without a DH. It makes it much more interesting and strategic than just having every at-bat be the exact same. Plus it actually makes a good, versatile bench a requirement, not just a group of guys who give your starter a rest every 6 days.

An Updated Look At Twins Payroll
GACbaseball replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Obviously only a single example, but Hayward reportedly took less money to go to the Cubs. In my opinion, the Twins' offer would have to be substantially greater than the next best offer to land a free agent because of our contender status and market size. And right now, I don't think it is in the Twins best interest to pay someone like Hayward $20,000,000 for 10 years. I don't want a 34 year old Jason Heyward being the reason we can't sign a 29 year old Byron Buxton to a long term deal. And if you think the Twins can afford all of these players and retain our own guys, then you are just not being realistic. Wishful? Yes. Realistic? No. -
What's Next For Alex Meyer?
GACbaseball replied to Cody Christie's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
At this point, I don't think his control issues will ever be "corrected" enough to be an effective starter. I'm just hoping to get strong value from him at this point, and I would rather have him focus on controlling two pitches out of the stretch, to become a dominant reliever. Working on 3-4 pitches, from the stretch and the windup, makes for a lot of things the guy has to work on to repeat consistently. Yes, he likely has the greatest potential as a starter. I would just like to simplify things for him and lower the potential slightly by making him a reliever but raise his floor substantially- 34 replies

Glen Quagmire: The Closer Conundrum
GACbaseball replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
It's 2016, can we get rid of the traditional closer role? Jensen and Perkins own the 8th and 9th innings. Try to match them up to give us the best chance to win -

I prefer to give up on starting and transition to a reliever full time. No more questions about his role will be and his stuff should play up in a limited role. No one is questioning if Trevor Rosenthal, Aroldis Chapman, or Wade Davis should have been given more opportunities to start....- 34 replies

I'm in favor of having your last bench player be an average-at-everything kind of player. We should have our bench bat with Arcia, two utility guys (one with high upside, one with high floor) in Santana and Nunez, and a solid, respectable catcher. This is such a sigh of relief to have a solid bench compared to the miserable ones we've trotted out over the past few seasons. I'm so glad I won't go to a Twins game and find out the lineup includes Mastroianni, Butera, and Bernier all hitting under .200

An Updated Look At Twins Payroll
GACbaseball replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I am glad we have stayed away from the humongous contracts for star players. Most of the time, by the end of the contract, they end up looking like Joe Mauer. Overpaid and blocking several players. We have not been in the position to spend money on big name free agents. First of all, why would Cueto, or Heyward, or any other big name player come to the cellar-dweller Twins over the last few years? Sure, some of them like Greinke would be willing to follow the money, but that would mean winning bidding wars with teams like the Dodgers and Cubs, which we aren't going to do and SHOULDN'T do. I prefer to avoid having massive albatross contracts for overpriced, aging veterans when we should be having the payroll flexibility to add the necessary veterans around an in-their-prime Sano and Buxton in a few years (and have enough money to keep them long-term) -
How could the bullpen be considered a disaster? All-Star Perkins in the 9th Jepsen who was very good for us in the 8th May looks like he could be very good to dominant in a setup role in the 7th Fien wasn't great last year but if he goes back to what he did 2013-2014, he is a great option as a 6th inning Sure we could make a splash by signing Bastardo or trading for Will Smith to balance out the bullpen but by no means will our bullpen be a "disaster" Especially with Meyer, Burdi, Chargois, Melotakis, Peterson, etc. all extremely close, I think we are fine adding O'Rourke, Darnell, Pressly and Milone/Nolasco to the guys mentioned above and having a very competent bullpen. Are they going to be the Yankees with Chapman, Miller and Betances? No. But they will be solid.
-
While Storen and Smith are surely very good players, I think it would be a waste to give up anything of value for a reliever at this point. I want to see what we have in Gonsalves, Stewart, and any of the other good prospects in our system, especially considering the volatility of relievers. While it was really fun to contend for the playoffs last year, we have to be realistic that the Royals are a MUCH better team all around than us right now, even if we had an improved bullpen. Sure things can happen but I don't want to bank on us getting lucky this year when we should be aiming to capitalize when the Royals can no longer afford all of their talent, which should also coincide with Sano, Buxton and Berrios starting to dominate. At that point it could be nice to have Gonsalves, Stewart, et al. bolstering our major league talent. I'm fine giving out a contract to any reliever, even giving 3 years to Bastardo. But I hate the idea of trading away good talent for slightly better players when there are decent options available.
-
I just don't agree that "there will always be another prospect." So should we just trade away Gordon, Javier, Gonsalves, Jay, Polacios, and Stewart now because we'll just get more prospects like them soon? My point with the Tigers is that if they hadn't gone out and spent some serious cash, they would be in serious trouble because they don't have very many players with starter potential in their minor leagues. I don't see the Twins spending as freely as the Tigers (or Yankees) that we would be able to trade away good prospects and have long lasting success. Great franchises (Cardinals and Giants) have sustained success by replenishing from within
-
Tell that to the Tigers right now who are desperate for someone, anyone to help them

http://strib.mn/1XuDY5k Looks like Torii is retiring. Even though he's my favorite player of all time (and we share the same birthday), I gotta say that we might have dodged a bullet with his retirement. Cheers to a heck of a career and to the future Rosario/Buxton/Hicks and Kepler Outfield!
-
That's fine to not be a huge fan of Dozier, but what guys in our system are you excited about? Let's be positive here, not hate the guys we have
-
It's been since the glory days of Cristian Guzman and Luis Rivas that the Twins have had two competent guys up the middle and we have seen a lot of success this year with Escobar (2nd half) and Dozier (1st half). With a TON of talent infused in the minor leagues, we shouldn't have to suffer through any seasons of Nishioka, Punto, or Bret Boone for the foreseaable future. Because of all the negativity on these forums lately, I thought I'd start a debate on which shortstop/2nd basemen are you most excited about? Who has the highest ceiling and the lowest floor? We have a ton of talent at the top of the system with Escobar already playing well, Danny Santana having a great year last year and showing he has talent, Jorge Polanco knocking at the door and Brian Dozier having an all-star year. In the lower levels, notable names of Nick Gordon, Engelb Vielma, Jermaine Polacios and the newly signed Wander Javier give us even more high-end possibilities. Personally, I'm most excited to see what Wander Javier can do in America, I think Jorge Polanco will be the safest bet to hit, and Nick will end up being the best of the bunch. Who are you most excited about?

I would definitely move Hicks out of CF for Buxton. Hicks is a better hitter right now, I get that, but that has nothing to do with outfield defense. I think Buxton is a better defensive CF than Hicks right now, and that's not selling Hicks short at all, just saying that Buxton is an absolute freak out there. Hicks could certainly keep hitting and playing outstanding defense in RF. What ball would drop with a Rosario-Buxton-Hicks OF?
-
Torii and Rasmus are a wash to me, Colby being a little better in the field and on the basepaths with Torii bringing intangibles and a better stick. I much prefer Torii's intangibles over whatever extra contributions Colby's on the field play would be worth (right now ~1 win according to WAR). I love what Torii has done to the Twins culture and his outfield expertise (even though he may not be very good anymore) has to have some value to Hicks, Rosario, Buxton, Arcia, etc. Having solid veterans is worth a small decrease in WAR (or OPS+, etc.) if they bring solid contributions to the team outside of their direct play. This isn't in a bubble of who's the better player, Torii or Rasmus, rather it's who is a better fit for the 2015 Twins. I would say Hunter without a doubt

Waving the white flag on this roster
GACbaseball replied to Vanimal46's topic in Minnesota Twins Talk
Duffey has 58 K's in 77 innings.Rogers has 88 K's in 127 innings. Achter has about 1K/inning Oliveros has more K's than innings I'd be fine with trying out Achter or Oliveros but I don't think Duffey or Rogers has the skill set to be a great reliever. Not that K's are the be all end all of reliever stats, but you need to be able to strike someone out in tight situations. I think it's funny that so many people have complained about Tonkin being sent up and down so frequently by saying he needs an extended look in the majors to see if he's any good. Well the Twins have been trying to give enough time to Thompson, Fien, Pressly and Boyer so we don't keep bringing them up and down before realizing their true ability. I would prefer to have Achter and Oliveros up too, but I can't blame TR for not trying because he has been cycling through options. I would be very surprised if Boyer and Fien are still our primary setup guys after July 31st or August 31st, and if they are, then I will jump on the TR bashing bandwagon. I just don't think he deserves quite the hate at this point- 123 replies

Waving the white flag on this roster
GACbaseball replied to Vanimal46's topic in Minnesota Twins Talk
The point is, it's much harder to find a guy who has the ability and stamina to go through a team's lineup 3 times than finding someone who has to get 1 or 2 guys out. We didn't expect to compete this year so we didn't go out and shore up our bullpen with the large number of good free agent relievers available. There just aren't as many good starters available as there are relievers- 123 replies

GACbaseball replied to Vanimal46's topic in Minnesota Twins Talk
Just saying that terry ryan HAS tried other options. Maybe Oliveros should have been given a shot, but I don't think many GMs would take promising starters and turn them into bullpen guys. Decent starters are so hard to find whereas relievers are dime a dozen. While Boyer and Fien should probably be gone by now, I'm not sure we have anyone better than them in our current system and I don't want to give up anything of value to get a reliever. While it's frustrating to watch our bullpen implode, I'm not in favor of bringing up shiny new toys if they won't be an upgrade over what we already have- 123 replies

Keith Law recently ranked the Mets as the #4 farm system in baseball, with ours not in the top 7. It would make them somewhat comparable, with Casey Meisner being somewhere between the Tyler Jay-Kohl Stewart range of prospect ranking- 123 replies

Waving the white flag on this roster
GACbaseball replied to Vanimal46's topic in Minnesota Twins Talk
They have tried internal options! Pressly, Thompson, Meyer, O'Rourke, Tonkin, etc. have all been brought up and failed. Who else would you promote other than possibly Achter and Oliveros? Then at that point it's just cycling through garbage again. TR probably hoped Burdi, Reed, Jones or Peterson was ready for the big leagues by now, with Jay possibly on the way in September. Obviously all of that is very unlikely now, which is why we are in a bind- 123 replies

GACbaseball replied to Vanimal46's topic in Minnesota Twins Talk
The Rockies got Jose Reyes and 3 prospects comparable to Meyer, Burdi and Kohl Stewart. We don't have anything close to Reyes, so we would have likely had to include Eduardo Escobar and replace Meyer with Berrios. Is an Escobar, Berrios, Burdi, Stewart trade worth Tulo to you? http://m.1500espn.com/pages/sportswire.php?sPL=trying_to_find_comparable_twins_package_to_the_troy_tulowitzki_trade072815 Clippard was also traded for the #7 prospect in the Mets system, comparable to Kohl Stewart. Would you trade Kohl Stewart for 2 months of Clippard?- 123 replies

The problem is, I don't want to repeat another Ramos-Capps trade because our bullpen is struggling. Would we be able to get anything worthwhile without giving up a decent prospect? No. I still want Fien, Boyer, Duensing gone, but I would prefer internal options. I wonder if we could tell Mike Pelfrey to look at Wade Davis and how a shift to the bullpen turned him into a highly valued player... he could be a very good setup man, IMO- 123 replies

What is going on with the Twins and Trevor May?
GACbaseball replied to Loosey's topic in Minnesota Twins Talk
I would have liked to see May demoted and have Rogers, Duffey, Achter or the other AAA usual suspects brought up to be a reliever. Keep May on a Starter's routine while giving someone else a chance to prove they are better than Boyer
