Game Thread: Cubs@Twins 6/19 7:10PM
Captain Hindsight replied to Riverbrian's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Cubs are looking more like the bad news bears tonight. They have been just gifting us runs which is just fine with me. Nice to see Vargas with a hard hit double. -
Trade Target: Jon Papelbon
Captain Hindsight replied to nicksaviking's topic in Minnesota Twins Talk
It's funny I thought about this earlier today as well and would welcome the move. He is expensive but very good and would really solidify the back end of the BP. There are roadblocks to acquiring Papelbon such as money, prospects, and the most important being that the Twins are on his no trade clause. In the past he has said he would not waive it unless his option was picked up and/or he was the closer. That pretty much ends the discussion before it begins. -
Even crazier is, who would have thought that this conversation would include Pelfrey.
-
Hughes and Gibson are locks to stay in the rotation. It boils down to Milone, Pelfrey and May. None of whom has pitched themselves out of a spot. Given the choice, I would move Pelfey to long man because he is only signed through the rest of the year and is the less attractive option going forward. The problem is outside of his last start he has provided results, whether they are sustainable is the question. I have trouble seeing the Twins making that move considering Milone and May have options. May has pitched too well to be optioned (4.41 K/BB and 3.17 FIP). In the end, I would move Pelfrey to the pen but expect Milone to be optioned. If that is the result it would not be the worst thing in the world as neither are particularly great options and Santana should be an upgrade over either, despite good results from both so far this season.

Game Thread: Twins v Cards, 6/17 @ 7:10pm CT
Captain Hindsight replied to DaveW's topic in Archived Game Threads
Well, there you go... -
I'm as disappointed in Hicks as the next guy, but is he really a worse pick than two below replacement level players, including one that did not sign? At worst the Twins can get a little value with his speed and defense as a 4th OFer.

How to fix this embarassing offense.
Captain Hindsight replied to DaveW's topic in Minnesota Twins Talk
Vargas has only been up a week and we are already clamouring to send him down? What shall we do if he has a couple good games in AAA? Instead of yo-yoing Vargas, I say we let him continue at the major league level and give Sano at least a couple weeks, perhaps even until all-star break, to force the issue. The offense has struggled because a number of key players have severely slumped at the same time Hunter, Plouffe, Mauer, Suzuki, pretty much anyone not named Dozier. If I were to do anything, it is give Mauer a short mental break and see if it can help him snap out of his current funk. Other than that, most of these players will turn it around in time. -
I didn't catch the first couple pitches as I stepped away but saw the last pitch. Looked low enough that I do not blame him for not swinging. He even argued with the ump about it. The first K was swinging and his other AB was a rather weak groundout. Regardless of whether he is swinging or not, something needs to change with him. He is hitting .188/.291/.271 halfway through June. That will not cut it especially from the 3-hole.

Official Twins Daily Day Two Draft Thread
Captain Hindsight replied to Jeremy Nygaard's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
There were a couple picks I would have made differently, for example Nix over Blakenhorn and Aiken over Jay (though that depends on the medicals) but overall I am quite happy with what the Twins selected in the first 10 rounds. Interesting how lefty heavy they went in both pitching and hitting. Really liked the Cody, Cabbage, Moran and the Kendrick picks. I think some of those balls Kendrick hit in the video still haven't hit the ground.- 202 replies

Official Twins Daily Day Two Draft Thread
Captain Hindsight replied to Jeremy Nygaard's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I am not sure where all the complaining about drafting relievers is coming from. We have drafted one in the 5th round. Sure, technically you can count Jay as well but he wasn't your typical reliever and it was nearly a consensus among the experts that he can start. Other than that we have drafted two starters, an OFer and two 3rd basemen. Not exactly loading up on relievers like past drafts.- 202 replies

Official Twins Daily Day Two Draft Thread
Captain Hindsight replied to Jeremy Nygaard's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I'd be happy with Trahan and Matuella, though I think I would pass on the others due to signability. I am hoping for Nix, but think the Twins might target more position players with Jay and Cody already brought in the fold.- 202 replies

Twins Hidden Draft Gems (Rounds 2-10)
Captain Hindsight replied to Seth Stohs's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I'm confused, how would that negatively effect their draft choices? I think they did well with their recent choices of Adam Brett-Walker and Nick Burdi.- 14 replies

Twins Hidden Draft Gems (Rounds 2-10)
Captain Hindsight replied to Seth Stohs's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Since he had TJ in April, would Matuella pitch enough before next years draft to make much of a difference? He is kind of in a bad spot, since he will be a senior next year and the talent pool should be better. I'd imagine if a team took a chance on him in the 3rd or 4th and gave him near a $1 million bonus he would be crazy not to accept.- 14 replies

Twins Select Tyler Jay Sixth Overall
Captain Hindsight replied to Cody Christie's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I do not think John Manual is implying his delivery is "high effort" but it creates high energy, which would collaborate with what others are saying. For example, here is a quote from a scouting report on MLB.com: "He generates that heat with athleticism and a quick arm rather than an excessive amount of effort in his delivery." and another from D1 Baseball: "He’s got the loose, easy delivery..." and finally here is a bit by John Manual of Baseball America, talking about Jays delivery in relation to Fulmers: "...Jay does it easier, does it cleaner."- 111 replies

Twins Select Tyler Jay Sixth Overall
Captain Hindsight replied to Cody Christie's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I am not a fan of this pick either but all I have heard is Jay has an easy delivery. On an unrelated note, anybody catch the name of the pitcher who relieved Jay in todays game?- 111 replies

Seems like things are pointing to Jay. Manual, Callis and Mayo all have him as the Twins selection in their final mocks before the draft. I'd find that a highly disappointing selection if it turns out to be true as I'm concerned about how his body and stuff will hold up as a starter. Speaking of which, noticed he was sitting more 91-93 instead of 94-96 in his performance today. That is why Law gets paid the big bucks. Nobody doesn't answer questions like he does.

I imagine a variation of these moves will be made throughout the course of the season, but not with the haste that a few of the posters would like. Good teams generally do not turn over 3 to 4 spots on their roster in a short period. Some fans too often want to treat the roster like a carousel with every up and down performance. Pulling the trigger on Duensing and Stauffer at the same time leaves us with few options if players like Oliveros or Achter struggle or get hurt. If either continue to show no signs of life then we will likely see one jettisoned soon, most likely Stauffer, because Duensing is a lefty and has a history with the team. I wasn't much of a fan of either the Pinto and (especially) Vargas moves, but I find it doubtful that if they continue to hit well in AAA we will see neither (along with Arcia) at some point this summer, though Pinto isn't exactly dominating.

Mock Draft 2.0 - 2015 MLB Draft
Captain Hindsight commented on Hrbowski's blog entry in Hrbowski's Blog
I hope Aiken is the pick as long as he isn't sending out signals that he wants to bust the budget. Last year in a much stronger draft he was the consensus top player, without the injury the Twins would not have the opportunity to acquire such a talent. The other options as mentioned are underwhelming and are not without their own question marks. Ryan's comments about his willingness to draft a player on talent regardless of injury status, makes me think that it is a strong possibility. -
Twins Draft Preview: 10-round Twins Mock
Captain Hindsight replied to Jeremy Nygaard's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Ryan said earlier that the Twins will let talent not medical concerns decide who they draft at number 6. MLBTR speculated this could mean Matuella or Aiken are in play with their first pick with Wolfson mentioning them being high on Aiken last year (though suggeted Allard might be more likely). It might be wishful thinking on my part that they would go this route but it is worth noting. Also, Mac Marshall is a JC player not a prep. He was draft eligible last year. -
Twins Draft Preview: Aiken & Allard
Captain Hindsight replied to Jeremy Nygaard's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I would not mind the Twins taking a chance on either player. In fact, unless Rodgers or Swanson fell, I would prefer it. Both of these players represent the type of obvious high end talent that this draft lacks. It is possible, if not very likely neither would be available if healthy. It certainly is risky with their injuries but the pay off makes it justifiable. -
Twins Draft Preview: Tyler Jay
Captain Hindsight replied to Seth Stohs's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I am fine with the Twins taking college relievers with good stuff and trying to convert them to starters, but not that high in the draft. If the Twins were going to take that much of a risk that early I would rather they take Brady Aiken. Not only is there questions whether Jay's stuff would remain the same but there is also the risk of how his arm holds up with a starters workload especially with a smaller frame. “He would have been a top-five pick had he been used as a starter all year and he continued to show the kind of stuff he has in his longest relief outings this spring.” That is a tremendous insight by Law. Basically saying if his two biggest question marks were answered, he would be a high pick. Seems like you could make a similar statement about a lot of players.
