  1. Well, I'll confess that when I said top 10 I may have used a bit of hyperbole to make a point, but Mauer's catching skills were at a peak and his offense was off the charts. And he probably would have caught 18-20 more games and DH'd in another 2-4 had he been available during April. The fact that he missed an entire month is, to me, the only reason not to consider that season to be one of the best ever.
  2. This still doesn't take into account the many things I referred to in my earlier post.
  3. Jim Kaat is 78 years old. As good as he was in his broadcasting career I doubt he'd want to jump into a full time gig here.
  4. I don't think WAR is adequate in assessing the impact of a catcher's contributions to his team's success. There are so many little things that catchers do that don't show up in the formula. Good catchers can reduce the number of stolen base attempts. Good catchers call the right pitch in key situations. Good catchers point out flaws in a pitcher's delivery or approach to a batter. Good catchers prevent wild pitches. And this is just the tip of the iceberg.
  5. His 2009 season was not only the best in the AL that year, it's probably one of the ten most valuable seasons in the history of baseball.
  6. That depends on your definition of "far". Is it 100% certain that the drop-off in his performance was due to the concussion? Of course not. But is it more likely that it was due to the concussion than to something else? Yes. And I'd even say it's far more likely.
  7. Now that it's September it doesn't really matter.
  8. That's called parity. Or maybe mediocrity. Either way it's going to make for interesting times.
  9. And came up firing to 2B. With the ball being foul the runner should have been tagging.
  10. And the Twins almost played there in 1985.
  11. Rarity there. 4U putout at 1B.
  12. The rest of the infield needs to communicate and tell him to cut but you're right.
  13. Dangit, they had him at third.
  14. So you're the one sitting there!
  15. Great minds think alike. I was actually going to cite Occam's Razor in my post that preceded this one.
  16. After giving it more thought and listening more critically I think Smalley is the best of the five overall. He does get a bit pretentious but I think he is the best combination of knowledge of the game and being able to communicate it well. I like Hunter and Hawkins because of their more recent involvement as players. For example I really enjoyed hearing Hawkins and Nathan talk pitching the other day. Hunter's positives turn into negatives quickly, though, whereas I think Hawkins has potential to be a really good analyst once he accumulates more experience.
  17. You and I and a few others have been banging our heads against a brick wall (unfortunate metaphor intended) about the concussion issue for a long time. I will never understand how anyone could believe that the astonishing, precipitous decline in his stats after the concussion was due to anything else.
  18. 3 of the 4 teams--Tampa Bay, Boston, and Atlanta-- played road games yesterday so maybe the reason is to allow more time to acclimate after travel. Boston only traveled from New York but they played a night game last night. As for the 4th team, Miami, I don't know. A side note: the Yankees played last night and then had to travel to Baltimore for a day game today so they are the ones dealing with the worst of the scheduling.
  19. I also thought of Madison as a possibility, but the only chance of success there would be as the Brewers' franchise, and it would probably require significant subsidization from the organization to stay afloat. Maybe they would be willing to do that in order to have the AAA team less than 90 minutes away, but a Twins' AAA team there would not be remotely viable.
  20. Those of us who have been watching since the start of the game are wondering the same thing.
  21. OK boys, now punish the bullpen. Soften them up for tomorrow.
  22. Fielding mistake by the pitcher. Should have held the ball and the runner.
  23. I think there only needs to be one Joe M. in future conversations.
