  1. I agree--Stephen will hit the proverbial bump in the road--either this year (or next year at Cedar Rapids)--it happened to Sano at New Britain, to an extent it happened to Buxton. Yes, keep the chip on your shoulder, but don't get too cocky. By the way, I expect both Stephen and Stewart to be at Cedar Rapids next year.
  2. That's supposed to be Clete and Mastro facing off...can figure out how to edit...
  3. IMHO whatever cash or grade C prospect we get for Carroll is a bonus. This was all about getting something to open a roster spot for Mastro--if we didn't trade Carroll or Doumit we would have to DFA somebody (Bernier??). Now Clete and Carroll face off over the remainder of the season for the 4th OF spot in 2014 and 2015.
  4. Using the eyeball test--I would have to say that Dozier/Florimon are about equal to Rivas/Guzman--definitely not better. I still have to get over Dozier's error (not charged) in the game here in DC. None of us know where these two will be in 2015 or later. Just look at the Nats utility guy (Lombardozzi--a familiar name to Twins fans)--he had a career year in 2012 and is a bum this year. I hope Florimon can continue to improve--and Rosario plays 2B with Dozier in the utility role--but who knows.
  5. Brett Lee Update 16 Brett came off the minor league DL today and made his 7th 2nd half appearance (all starts). The vaunted Kernels offense showed up and the Kernels won 7-4. Brett didn't get the win. He left in the third inning with the Kernels winning 2-0. Obviously, on a limit coming off the DL. Nevertheless, Brett's outing was impressive. He faced 11 batters in the 3IP--did not walk anybody; did not give up a run. He allowed 2 hits while striking out 1. He had 5 groundball outs vs. 0 (none, zippo) fly outs. He looks to be fine to finish the season--though his innings count for the year is now 103.1 He increased all his outstanding second half ratios--in 44.2 IP he has given up 11runs (7 earned), 33 hits, 5BB and struck out 35. That makes his K/BB ratio an outstanding 7/1. His WHIP 0.85; his ground out to fly ratio almost 3.5 to 1 and his second half ERA 1.41. We should see if these numbers hold up next year at either (or both) Fort Myers and New Britain. For the year, Brett is 7-4 with an ERA of 3.14.
  6. Loved the video. I have followed the minors much more closely the last couple of years possibly cause the Twins are so bad...always good to see guys like Albers and Colobello finally get their chance. Lots of kids in the minors besides the big names (Sano, Buxton, etc.) hopefully they get their chance too.
  7. I am going to be the devil's advocate here (or something). I saw Dozier live here in DC in June and he was absolutely dreadful on defense--he made an error (that wasn't given) that led to 5 runs that should have been unearned--overall in that game I would rate his defense poor. I have seen him a couple of other times on the tube and highlights on twinsbaseball.com and he has looked better. I don't think he is Pedroia lite and no reason to start him over Rosario when the kid is ready. To me, Dozier is a slightly better Little Nicky Punto and no more.
  8. [quote=DAM DC Twins Fans;147845 I tried MILB.com and Twins sites--could not find confirmation--but assume it is true and will be posted soon enough. Good for Stephen who is more and more looking like a steal in the draft. Will be checking E-Town boxscores looking for him. Transaction posted this morning (8/4) on Appy League website...
  9. I don't "tweet"--as a soon-to-be grandfather (my first grandchild--a boy is due any day) I am too old to adapt quickly to new technology... I tried MILB.com and Twins sites--could not find confirmation--but assume it is true and will be posted soon enough. Good for Stephen who is more and more looking like a steal in the draft. Will be checking E-Town boxscores looking for him. (Good news since my other "adopt a prospect" Brett Lee has joined Kohl Stewart on the 7 day DL.
  10. Seth: Great article, thanks for posting. Like everybody, I have no clue how Albers will do with the Twins. But he has definitely earned his chance these last couple of years. I hope he makes it and becomes a solid mid-rotation guy for a few years.
  11. Thanks--good point on trade deadline day...
  12. Stephen Gonsalves Update 5 Stephen made his 5th professional appearance yesterday for the GCL Twins. It was his second start. He left with a 1-0 lead--but the GCL Twins lost the game as the pitchers who followed including Luke Bard didn't do as well. Stephen continued his impressive career but a couple of bad things showed up. He got 0 (nada, zilch) ground outs. His 9 outs were 3 fly ball outs and 6Ks. He also walked 3 (that's one per inning--not good). Still he only gave up 1 hit and no runs (earned or unearned) as well as averaging 2 strikeouts per inning. For 2013 (and his career)--Stephen has pitched 14.1 innings (seems to be limited to 3IP per appearance) while giving up one earned run and 8 hits. He has walked 7 and struck out 18. That gives him the following outstanding ratios: K/BB 18-7 or 2.57. Ground to fly of 14/7 or 2; and a WHIP of 1.047. (All of these dropped after yesterday's appearance but are still outstanding. His official line is 1-0 with an ERA of 0.63. By the way, has anybody else had trouble with extremely slow loading of Twins Daily??
  13. I take these lists with very few grains...but yes Adam Walker needs to be on them... My adopt-a-prospect (Gonsalves) and Kohl Stewart who seem to be destined to be linked with each other are both on this list...between them they have pitched about 25 innings in their minor league careers...that is less than a small sample size...how can you project from that vs. Walker's whole season. To me, don't include 2013 draftees till next spring at the earliest.
  14. Thanks for info...kind of what I thought
  15. Brett Lee Update 15 Well, the clock struck midnight (or insert your own cliché here)--Brett's streak of 2 complete games in a row ended. The Kernels won--but Brett didn't get the win. The vaunted Kernels offense showed up but only after Brett left (while he was in the vaunted Kernels offense got the grand total of 1 (UNO) hit). Brett pitched well while he was in the game--5 IP, 2 runs (only 1 earned), 6 hits, 1 BB, 4 Ks...not sure why he was pulled after only 5 innings down only 2-0...my hunch is his innings count for the year...100!! More than he has pitched in his professional career and I think since High School. This was his 6th second half appearance (all starts). He has pitched 41.2 innings (an average of virtually 7 a start). He has given up 11 runs (7 earned) and 31 hits while walking only 5 and striking out 34. His 2nd half ratios (assuming my math is correct) ERA is 1.51; K/BB is almost 7/1; ground out to fly out is 61/19 (3.21) and WHIP is 0.864. All of these are truly outstanding and bode well for a future with the Twins as either a starter or a long reliever in the Duensing role. Probably has thrown too many innings to be promoted in August (unless in a pen role) but should be in Ft. Myers or New Britain in 2014. For the year, Brett is 7-4 with an ERA of 3.23. (he had a few bad starts in the first half).
  16. Great article--thanks. Like most here--I am hoping that Albers gets his shot in the show over the last 2 months of the season.
  17. Stephen Gonsalves update 4: Stephen made his 4th professional appearance today--closing out the game--pitching the last 3.1 innings. He has now started once, thrown in the middle twice and closed once. The GCL Twins lost the game--it appears their defense was the cause (4 errors leading to 2 unearned runs). This all happened before Stephen took the mound. For the day, Stephen gave up 3 hits and a BB in his 3.1 IP (but no runs). He struck out 2, got 5 ground outs and 1 flyout. Pretty DAM impressive even if not his best performance as a pro. For 2013 (and his career) Stephen has pitched 11.1 innings given up 1 earned run, 7 hits, 4 BBs and struck out12. That gives him the following outstanding ratios--K/BB 12-4 or 3-1; ground/fly of 14/4 which is 3.5/1 and a WHIP of 0.999. His official line is 1-0 with an ERA of 0.79. Looking more and more like a steal in the 4th round...and it will be interesting to watch him and Kohl Stewart the next 2 or 3 years as they move up the Twins minor league system.
  18. I was at the June 9 game here in DC...Dozier booted a ball at 2B that led to a long inning (5th I think) where Diamond faced an extra 4 or 5 batters...it was ruled a hit...but even Gardy said it should have been an error. There were several other fielding miscues behind Diamond requiring him to throw maybe an extra 20 pitches. I believe he hasn't recovered from that. I also agree with some of the commenters above that maybe flipping Diamond and Albers for August would be a good idea. Obviously Diamond has been fighting sophomore slump--I believe he will be fine in the future and a good 3/4 starter.
  19. Last weekend in August sees NB come to Bowie...my son and I are thinking of going...depending on the arrival of the grandson who is due at that time...
  20. Brett Lee Update 14 For about a minute I thought about just copying the last update...but I didn't. It will be very similar because the games were similar. Brett made another move (just like my other adopt-a-prospect Stephen Gonsalves) to move up on all of Seth's lists--including starting pitcher for the month of July. He made the case as well for promotion to the Miracle and (hopefully for me) 2014 to New Britain. He threw his second complete game of the year--the second for the Kernels--and his second consecutive complete game. He received support from the vaunted Kernels offense (or at least Adam Walker who hit 2 HR and now has 20 for the year). This time the offense came late (5th inning). Brett went 9 innings giving up 6 hits (1 HR) which led to the only run he gave up (it was earned) while walking 1 and striking out 10!!! He continued his outstanding grounder to flyball ratio by inducing 9 groundouts and 3 flyouts. His second half stats--5 appearances (all starts); 36.2 IP (an average of 7.1 IP per start) 9 runs (6 earned) (which gives a second half ERA of 1.49 if my math is good), 25 hits, 4 BB and 30Ks!!! That makes his second half K/BB ratio 10/1!! His ground/fly ratio is 51 to 18 which is a ratio of 2.83 to 1. His WHIP for the second half is 0.79. Again all of these assume my math is correct. All are truly outstanding even if my math is slightly off. For the 2013 season Brett is 7-4 with an ERA of 3.30. He has pitched 95.2 innings in 2013 which is by far the most he has pitched (at least since High School).
  21. Great article Seth...I was fascinated by all the different things a minor league coach has to deal with. We have to remember that these are still kids in their early 20s at Cedar Rapids and they have to absorb a lot of stuff as they try to make their way up to the Twins.
  22. Stephen Gonsalves Update 3: By the way, I write this from the box score and anything I can read about the game...where I live (MD suburbs of Washington DC) the only Twins affiliate that I have a chance of seeing live is New Britain (when they come to Bowie or Harrisburg)...maybe in 2014 I will adopt a prospect from New Britain but I like the ones I have... Stephen made his 3rd GCL appearance today...he didn't get the start that went to Alex Wimmers (rehab??). Not his best but still pretty DAM good. Stephen pitched 3 innings (5-7) gave up his first professional run (on 2 hits--a single and a double). He struck out 4 and didn't walk anybody (or hit a batter either). He did make an inconsequential error on a pickoff attempt. He had 3 groundball outs and 1 flyout in addition to his 4Ks. His 2013 (and career) totals--8IP, 1 Run (Earned), 4 hits, 3 BB and 10Ks. So his K/BB ratio is still outstanding (10-3). His ground/fly ratio remains 3/1 (9/3) and his WHIP is a miniscule 0.875. His official line is 1-0 with a 1.13 ERA. All of this is outstanding and with each appearance I grow more optimistic about his future in the Twins organization...(Seth and Jeremy could Stephen and Kohl move up in Sept. for playoffs with Sept. call ups or will the Twins as usual move them slowly up the chain???)...again remember we are dealing with a very small sample size here...
  23. Outstanding article...like others I will be rooting for Grimes to get to the show...if only for a month or two...he is certainly putting in the time.
  24. A few posts later and still no rationale...I was one who had never heard of Bob Dernier (or Doug Bernier)...I looked him up on MiLB.com--he is THIRTY-THREE years old. He has not broken .250 since 2008 until this year. Has no chance of being called a prospect. Arcia demotion makes sense only to avoid Super 2--like Parmalee he has nothing to show in the minors. Arcia and Parmalee need MLB at-bats (instead of Doumit) to see if they will be part of the (hopefully) contending Minnesota Twins in 2015. If the goal is to get them ABs, send them to New Britain which is actually playing this week...
