  1. Yeah upgrades at those positions would be nice, but when you look at how bad the pitching has been, it's hard to argue that it should be priority #1. Of course, pitching can be helped or hurt a lot by the quality of defense played behind them. But, the Twins have surrendered 143 home runs this year - most in the AL. I've watched some pretty good defensive middle infielders over the years, but I have yet to see one that can stop a ball from going over the outfield fence in fair territory.
  2. Good gracious how many Nishi-bashing threads do we need? And how much longer to we need to flagellate the defunct equine here? I tend to agree with thrylos on this one, way too big a deal is being made out of this. He's a failed signing, which is unfortunate, but there are bigger problems and more pressing matters.
  3. I saw that. What a shame. So sad that someone that young and bright would take his own life. I spend my offseasons following the T-Wolves (you think it's hard being a Twins fan.....), and always enjoyed reading his stuff.
  4. We'd need to go 29-23 the rest of the way to get to 78 wins. It's a fairly soft schedule, lots of KC, Cleveland and Seattle, so while it's not something I'd put money on, I'd say it's well within the realm of possibility.
  5. This Indians team reminds me a lot of the late-2011 Twins. Unfocused and unraveling.
  6. ---Ha! Too true! The other difference between Nishi and Valencia is that Nishi at least seems to realize and acknowledge his awfulness. If Valencia had played last night and gone 0-5 with 2 errors, he still would have been strutting around like the blowout victory was all due to him.
  7. Nishi needs to figure out how to relax. The man looks like he mentally ties himself in knots out there, which leads to him physically tie himself in knots like he did on that first play last night. It's like watching a well-meaning but hopelessly nervous guy on a first date who keeps spilling drinks and saying stupid things. Sure, he'll never be the Dos Equis guy, but if he could just find a way to relax, he'd at least avoid humiliating himself. And a non-humiliating effort would be a step in the right direction for Nishi. Have we tried having him do a few shots before first pitch? Maybe he'd calm down and play better if he were a little liquored up.
  8. ---Agree with this. My fear is that they'll learn a lesson, but it will be the wrong lesson. This move was a departure from recent tradition. More money, higher risk. In a lot of ways, it was exactly the type of move the fans complained that the team refused to make, opting instead for low cost, low risk, low reward guys. So now that it has completely blown up in their face, I'm afraid the conclusion will be that it's better go back to sifting through the bargain bin for Mike Lambs and Tony Batistas and ignoring Japan completely. Hopefully I'm wrong and they'll do a post-mortem on what went wrong here and how to do better next time so that instead of another Nishioka, we get, say, another Tadahito Iguchi.
  9. I understand where you're coming from here, I mean how many "Nishioka sucks" threads do we need to have going at once? However, I don't agree with the notion that anyone is obligated to be positive or negative here. Different people view the situation differently, and different people enjoy following baseball in general in different ways. Some people are more interested on finding ways to enjoy the season. They tend to focus on positives and look for silver linings. Others are more interested in figuring out what's wrong with the team and how to make it better. They tend to focus more on problem areas and looking back at how we got here. There's tension between these 2 groups. The latter group tends to view the former as blind, cheerleading homers. To the former group, the latter are a bunch of Pissy Pauls. But in the spirit of free expression as these forums are intended, we need to accept that there really isn't a correct approach to fanhood and tolerate these differences.
  10. And he's in the lineup tonight no less. Hope he surprises the living daylights out of us. Nothing to be lost by seeing what he can do, even if the answer to that is "not much", might as well give it a shot. I wonder if things might have played out a little differently with him had he played in Rochester last year. I don't know that I've ever seen someone look so completely uncomfortable on a baseball field. This has turned out to be a bad move on so many levels. Not only was he a mess on the field, but last year I made the mistake of reading the Strib and PiPress comments with some regularity, and they were often a cess pool of racially-charged hate directed at Nishioka that almost made me throw in my mouth. I know the guy played some bad baseball and the internet brings out the worst in people, but the fact that so many people went there was really disappointing. I'd like to think our state and our fan base is better than that.
  11. ---Yeah, it does. 37-34 after starting 10-26. Only 3 games back of Cleveland with 10 games left against them. Not that a third-place finish is anything to celebrate or aspire to, but after last season's second-half free fall and this season's miserable start, clawing back to that would at least be a step in the right direction.
  12. I thought for sure this one was over when they got that 4th run. Nice to exactly a little revenge on Boston - there were a couple of heartbreaking losses when they swept us at Target Field early on, during the horrid 10-26 start.
  13. Wow, that was unexpected but fun. Let's hope Burton can hold 'em down.
  14. ---You've got to be kidding me. Gardy and Co "gave up" on Casilla? Really? The guy has been given multiple chances to establish himself as a regular, and he's failed at every one of them. How many more does he need? Giving up is what the Twins did with Luke Hughes, and though you spent considerable time railing on them about it when it happened, I think his post-Twins career (demoted twice and released in a span of about 9 weeks) has validated that decision.
  15. He's had his ups and downs, but I'm confident that Dozier can develop into a solid MLB shortstop. The rest of the lineup is strong enough that we don't necessarily need a ton of production from him to win. And yes, the error count is high, but it often is for rookie shortstops. I expect he'll learn from those mistakes and get better. He's also made some outstanding plays in the field. In any case, I hope the whining over the JJ Hardy trade can stop. I'd much rather be looking forward to Dozier develop than be committed to another 2 years and $15 million of Hardy with the way he's produced this year.
  16. Interesting, but you can't read too much into soundbites. Terry Ryan has a tough row to hoe in figuring out a starting rotation for 2013. He'll have some money to spend, nobody know exactly how much yet, but I expect a free agent or two. Since he needs quantity at least as much as quality, I expect he'll wait until the biggest names are gone, then go sorting through the bargain bin again. Hopefully with better results than Jason Marquis. The wildcard in this whole thing is Morneau. Does he get traded for pitching, or to free up money to sign a starting pitcher?
  17. This loss is so frustrating on so many levels, hard to know where to begin. As soon as I saw Gray in the 9th, I knew it was over. The guy is just awful. He's surrendered at least 1 run in 5 of his last 6 appearances, in which he's given up a total of 10 ER while only getting 15 outs. There seriously isn't anyone better we can't put out there with the game on the line? I know some of the other guys have put in a lot of work lately, but not all of them. Burnett pitched each of the last 2 days, but only threw a total of 19 pitches. He couldn't have gone out there for the 9th?
  18. ---Actually, it's more the case that the only people still complaining about this deal are the ones who think Ryan can do no right. The rest of us were at worst mildly disappointed but not terribly surprised that we didn't get more and have moved on from talking about the trade, because it really isn't that big a deal.
  19. Always fun to walk off the Whities. If we have to be reduced to the role of spoilers, there's nobody whose season I'd rather spoil than the Sux.
  20. Whether or not trading him was the right thing to do is a separate issue. They certainly didn't have to move him. And I wouldn't disagree with the position that if what they got was the best available offer, it might have been better to keep him and make the qualifying offer. My only issue is with this claim that with by engaging in better marketing bluster and planting rumors, the Twins could have duped someone into giving up more for Liriano. MLB teams have enough reliable information and intelligence on other players that they do not need to rely on posturing and hype when valuing potential trade targets. There are plenty of legit reasons to rip on the front office, arguably including the decision to trade Liriano at all. But failure to get more for him when they did isn't one of them, it just wasn't realistic than anyone was going to give up more than Chicago did.
  21. I don't get this argument that the Twins somehow should have been able to bluff and BS somebody into giving us more for Liriano. This isn't like poker where your opponent can't see your randomly drawn cards. It's big league baseball, where what you have is on full display and has a track record, and you have sophisticated opponents who employ all kinds of people to analyze it. Car salesman may be able to pressure naive customers into overpaying by falsely claiming demand for their merchanside and over-emphasizing its strengths while minimizing or concealing its flaws. But the notion that such techniques could successfully be used in MLB trades is frankly ludicrous.
  22. Agree with everything you've said here, Nick. I continue to be perplexed by the number of people who are so convinced that we could have gotten so much more for him. They seem to be valuing him based solely on his upside while ignoring his downside, but even the dumbest of MLB front offices is smart enough not to do that. And when it comes to a guy at his age with his experience, you can't be talking about "potential" anymore. He is what he is. A guy who ranges from brilliant to brutal, both between and within starts. I don't see why anyone would think that teams would be lining up to offer their best prospects for a 2-month rental of such a player. It defies logic. Time will tell how this trade plays out. Maybe the Whities are right and they can teach Frankie some new tricks. Maybe he helps them and they even bring him back. But maybe the Whities see bad Frankie, miss the postseason and he walks at the end of the year while one of these guys ends up helping the Twins, and the fans on the Southside start demanding to know what the hell their management was thinking when they made this deal. We shall see.
  23. I still don't understand why so many are so convinced that TR could have gotten more than he did. Again, we're talking about a rental of a guy who got relegated to the bullpen a couple of months ago because he was getting shelled every single start. Why would anyone give up anything of value for a starting pitcher who was so bad earlier in the year that he couldn't hold on to is spot in the worst rotation in baseball? Even dumbest of MLB front offices is going to know better than to value a guy based on a good month or two while ignoring the rest of his recent body of work. Maybe it's because he went to the White Sox, but I dont' see why that's such a big deal. Look at the standings. We ain't catching them. And the additional of Frankie is just as likely to torpedo the Whities chances of getting to the postseason than it is strengthen them.
  24. A little perspective for those of you who are ripping this trade - let's not forget that we're talking about a starting pitcher who 2 months ago was pulled from what is without question the worst starting rotation in the American League, and probably in all of baseball. It was simply wishful thinking to believe that we'd get much more than we did for him.
