  1. I rarely care about a prospect listing past the top 100, so while there certainly are some weird rankings for the Twins (and likely other teams) WAY past 100, I don't think it takes away from the overall view of the main prospects. But I mean, one can certainly discard it as hocom. Most of them end up being hocom anyway.
  2. I've seen prospect listing use different rules. Some won't touch anyone who has had any time in the majors, some won't touch anyone who has exceeded rookie status, some consider young players with less than a year still a prospect. Lots of different ways I've seen.
  3. probably, though had we already developed a big history of doing that by the time the Trout draft came along? We might be getting a look at him right about now at the major league level too :-)
  4. Who knows what would have happened if we had passed on Gibson all together and got the OF from Millville HS :-)
  5. In the top 50, we have Buxton at #5, Sano at #13, Gordon at #39, Berrios at #40, Meyer at #44 and Stewart at #48. So six of the top 50. After that we're looking at #96, Rosario, as our next one.
  6. Buxton at #5, Sano at #13. Four Cubs in the top 12. http://www.scoutingbook.com/prospects/
  7. it's awesome you called this over a month ago!
  8. Fangraphs had him with a -5.4 UZR in CF and for UZR/150 it was -12.2. They did say he was at zero runs saved, so not in the negative in that regard. I don't think he has had enough time there for the metrics to really tell us much (less than 60 games worth of innings), and hopefully since he's an IF and not an OF, we won't have to find out what a larger sample size tells us. To me, he didn't look good out there, but he sure tried, which I like to give him credit for. I wouldn't expect a guy who played IF his whole life to go out there and play an exceptional OF.
  9. 'In losing 90-plus games each year from 2011-2014 the Twins' defense was 98 runs below average according to Ultimate Zone Rating (ranks them 28th), 107 runs below average according to Plus/Minus, and 115 runs below average according to Defensive Runs Saved (that ranks them 24th). (Overall ranked 26th.) Twins scouts watched Hunter for 30-35 games and graded him average or better defensively, so that's what Ryan and the front office relied on rather than trusting the defensive numbers that all agree he was somewhere between bad and horrendous. By the way, Hunter had about two balls hit to him per game this year, so evaluating his defense based on watching 30-35 games is like evaluating a hitter based on watching 60-70 at-bats. Ryan repeatedly saying the Twins need to pitch better and repeatedly denying the Twins' defense has been awful is a weird, frustrating disconnect. Their outfield defense rated particularly poorly, yet when asked about that Ryan scoffs at the numbers and insists guys like Josh Willingham were perfectly adequate. He also scoffed at the numbers all rating Hunter as 15-25 runs below average during the past two seasons' http://aarongleeman.com/tag/eduardo-nunez/ Stuff put in parenthesis is me just putting the info into league context rankings.
  10. what do you base you opinion of Gallo on, might I ask?
  11. http://www.baseballprospectus.com/article.php?articleid=878 Here's a good read.
  12. Yes, the pitchers pitched to the Twins philosophy which is let the ball get put into play and have the defense behind you take care of business. It's a nice idea if the defense is good. They continued to get and groom pitchers to fit this philosophy and yet abandoned defense. They are now starting to change the pitching philosophy, but that takes time for those changes to be seen at the major league level. In the meantime, we see the results of the disconnect.
  13. I'd be happy if this team won 5 more games than it did last year. It's mostly the same starting team except our OF defense likely got worse by adding Hunter and we added Santana to the rotation. Many of our players are due for regression offensively (Plouffe, Escobar, D. Santana, Vargas) , or at least seem to be due for it. Hughes is due for regression. Mauer is due for regression to the positive, but really, why should we expect the offense to be any better than last year? At the very best it will be as good as it was. The rotation adds a guy, but overall this team should be happy to reach 75 as is currently constructed, especially when you consider the other teams in our division.
  14. to borrow from Chief, 'we can't give our money away?' :-)
  15. Until the defense is even average (which we are a long way from), our team will continue to give up more runs than it should, which will knock out or starters sooner than they likely deserve, which will overwork the pen and on and on. For a team whose long-time philosophy was to get and groom pitchers that pitch to defense, allowing the defense to be this bad is inexcusable.
  16. please see my post above about the FIP-ERA gap.
  17. I agree, Bourjos would help a lot. Look at the Orioles rotation. They had a FIP worse than our rotation's FIP, yet their rotation ERA was a run and a half lower than ours. That defense really helped them. overall. Our rotation had the largest ERA-FIP gap in the majors last year. Over a full run difference. Only two other teams had a ERA-FIP gap at over .5 but less than 1 runs, and one was exactly .5, while the other was .51. In 2013, we also had the biggest gap between ERA and FIP.
  18. The problem with having such a poor defense is that it makes the pitching look worse than it is, so then we focus on THAT (the symptom) being the problem and try to fix that as opposed to focusing on the disease itself and fixing that. If the defense was better, then the pitchers would look better and last longer into games, so then the bullpen doesn't get overworked, etc, etc...
  19. If that was the real Hughes, that means he was pretty much the 5th, 6th best starting pitcher in the majors last year. He did really well last year, all the credit to him, but I doubt he's that high up the SP food chain. IMO, we did make our OF defense worse. We brought in a horrible defensive RF who turns 40 next year and moved Arcia from his more familiar spot. And our defensive options for CF are not looking good either.
  20. Good luck to Parms!
  21. They have to bring Cuddy and Morny back in 2017.:-)
  22. I must have misunderstood the criteria. Morny, Cuddy and Mr Hunter are all still playing, one of them with the team. Good to know Mauer might make the Twins HOF cut :-)
  23. Radke is. I noticed no Mauer in your list.
  24. I can see where they'd prefer Valbuena to Escobar from a talent standpoint. Escobar would have been under control for longer, though.
