  1. I'm starting to think Bill James is starting to lose it. His interviews have become very, um, hard to follow.
  2. It troubles me when exhaustive study is done on a subject by people qualified to do so and it gets tossed aside as made up because it doesn't jive with what we were taught when we were young. One may decide not to believe in it, but slighting the effort of the people trying to open lines of discussions in an effort for everyone to understand the game better seems counter-intuitive and, in fairness, insulting to the people. History is filled with things we were sure we knew was right or wrong only to be proven other-wise. Technology helps. And it's good to know the some of the same people who consider Perez's framing is below average also, overall, had him as the best defensive catcher last year. One can point out a flaw in a player and still, overall, think he's very good.
  3. Well, in fairness, I didn't bring up the consensus part so there is no presumption on my part. In fact, I made sure to point out that there's hardly ever a consensus on the most basic things. I didn't say framing is one of the most basic things. Doesn't matter if everyone wants to believe in it or not, but I will continue to use it when discussing catcher defense because after reading about framing at length, the evidence is over-whelming IMO, whether others believe it or not.
  4. There's been enough analysis on this to know framing is a real thing and there are catchers better at it than others. Whether there's a consensus on it or not is really not any kind of reason to ignore the info. There's a lot of things that there is no consensus on, even the most obvious things.
  5. http://espn.go.com/blog/sweetspot/post/_/id/55180/pitchers-hurt-by-new-catchers 'Ervin Santana, Twins: He hasn't exactly hasn't received much help from his catchers the past few years. Salvador Perez, despite winning back to back Gold Gloves, hasn't graded out as a good pitch framer and the Braves' various catchers also rated out below average last year. Twins catcher Kurt Suzuki has consistently graded poorly according to StatCorner.com. So aside from moving back to the AL to a team with a poor defensive outfield, Santana's not going to get much help from his catcher.'
  6. I think Arrieta settles around a mid 3.50-3.75 FIP. We'll see how it goes. I don't think they have too much concern on their rotation this year, but never know.
  7. Hammels is staying low in the zone, Hendricks looks good (and is young). Travis Wood is due to bounce back. Arrieta could (and should) continue.
  8. For me, it's pretty easy to see that both systems have some serious talent in the farm system and it makes it easy to compliment both without slighting either.
  9. http://www.fangraphs.com/blogs/the-lasting-effect-of-concussions/ It's an interesting read and pertains to a few players who wear, or have worn, the Twins uniform.
  10. I like Berrios better as well. And there are a few prospects people, like Fangraphs' Kiley McDaniel, who do as well.
  11. If someone would have told be Vavra would be the last of that long tenured coaching group I would have laughed hard.
  12. I like to have some kind of actual proof before I believe someone took PEDS. For example, Jeff Bagwell. No proof that I'm aware of. There's 4.
  13. Is it more or less ridiculous than George Foreman naming all his boys George? There's George Jr, George III, George IV, George V, and George VI.
  14. Joe Mauer seems to get pitched outside a lot more than anyone else. More than any batter that I can remember. Maybe that's just my perception. When he gets pitches that are actually good to pull, he does that. Problem is he's trying to pull pitches that aren't meant to be pulled. I imagine because people keep talking about how he has to be a power guy.
  15. was Tobi complimenting the Cubs for their strategy? Doesn't read that way to me. The way I read it was he prefers the Twins strategy and that the Cubs one is short-sighted because they are position player heavy for their top prospects.
  16. I hope Joe avoids all discussions like this, and basically anything on the internet about him, and focuses on just getting back to being how he was before. I would prefer no one gets in his head. I want to let him get back to doing what he does well and stop expecting him to be someone he isn't.
  17. Well, Shoeless Joe batted .375/.394/.563 in that W Series. If that's trying to throw a game, I wonder what trying to win would look like.
  18. For me, the number one issue is defense and how we didn't address the issue in a positive way.
  19. wasn't Berrios almost 5 years younger than league average age when he was at AA ball?
  20. love this guy! Good to see Berrios so highly ranked by Fangraphs as well.
  21. Exactly. So we should absolutely be thrilled with the assessment.
  22. According to him, a good chunk of scouts he's talked to feel the same way. And I've seen some say the same thing as well.
  23. and a FIP of 4.69 which would rank him lower than Nolasco, Gibson, Correia, Hughes.
