  1. I am slowly but surely coming to the conclusion that Pinto needs to be sent down to work on his batting (and catching). He is 2-23 (.087) in the last 2 weeks, including 8 strike outs. Maybe some some at bats in AAA help him figure out.
  2. As of 6/3/14, Mauer is hitting .167 with Runners in Scoring Position. For his career he has hit .337 with RISP. So yes we are frustrated by his failure in "leveraged" situations.
  3. Thanks for supplying the link.
  4. I think Nunez should be squeezed out and Santana should stay. He's the future, and giving these young guys a feeling of camaraderie this year will help them perhaps win championships in a couple of years. Nunez is going nowhere, he's a stopgap measure all the way. And, of course, Kubel's time of designation, sadly, is coming very soon.
  5. Hicks is 24. He has a lot of time. Send him to AAA. Give him a year, or two, or three to figure it out. If he doesn't, DFA him. Kubel needs to be DFA now, right now. (I was very much in favor of giving Kubel a chance this season but clearly he's finished.) Opinions are a dime a dozen, and I've just given you two.
  6. "Logan Darnell pitched just two innings, gave up one run (three earned) ..." I just had to be snarky. Errors happen, even with umpires, but those don't get recorded in a stat sheet.
  7. This should have been my final paragraph in my initial post. My frustration stems from Mauer's poor performance on the field. Stoic or enraged, I don't care. I just want to see him beat the shift, and strike out less often, and get the average above .300.
  8. a) There may be no cheap way out. If his decline continues the fanbase will revolt. c) The return either way, if his decline is real, may be underwhelming. d) As Joe gets into his 30s the Kemps products will cause him to get a belly, so he'll stop going to Mom's house.
  9. I was thinking today about how Mauer is so stoic. He reminds me of Sam Jacobson, another repressed Minnesota boy. If Mauer could only light a fire under himself! Show some emotion. Get mad. Line out and shout. Curse out a ****ing umpire for ringing him up. Something to show us fans that he cares. But he is who he is. He can't change that. We'll never see that kind of fire in him. Sad, but true. Why wouldn't I be used to this by now? Then the image came to me of the video of Joe running the bases for his inside-the-park home run in a tee-ball game. How he laid out, mock-exhausted, happy, delirious, on the grass and was mobbed by his pals. I think that's the most emotion I've ever seen in him.
  10. Damn, found out I can't edit. I see the errors, don't like them either.

  12. I don't have the answer to that. Fuld when he comes back? All I know (or think I know) is that Hicks must go down. He just got picked off first, when the team was down by two runs. He needs to learn how to be an MLB player. Perhaps he can, perhaps he can't. But to be failing to this degree at this level is untenable.
  13. I agree. I hope he gets sent down very soon to work on his batting.
  14. desperate measures taken by a desperate men usually result in quick endings. i'm not sure, but i think his goose is cooked.
  15. Yes, it's painful to watch, but would you rather have trotted out Kubel and Colabello yet again? There aren't many options at this time.
  16. Fuld is the stopgap guy we already have. Gardy is in the mood to give Hicks a lot of rope again. Okay. When that fails, and Fuld is ready, bring Fuld up and send Hicks down. No need for another stopgap guy such as Sizemore. All three seem equally distasteful at treading water.
  17. I like Jason Kubel and was glad when he made the team, but he has 13 RBIs and has done almost nothing since the first 2 or 3 weeks of the season. Same with Colabello, but worse, which is sad because we're all rooting for him so much. And especially horrific, is Hicks. Sick of Hicks. Gotta go. Send down. See if he can ever improve, but do it at AAA. So surely there is room for Arcia and Willingham (and Fuld when he's ready). Reinforcements, please.
  18. This got me thinking. If batters have trouble, or virtually cannot, adapt to shifts, and shifts have become more prevalent, have overall MLB batting averages gone down? I looked it up. And averages have gone done consistently for the last 9 years. (This would be appear to be a topic for an actual baseball blogger to investigate. Anyone?) 2006: .269 2007: .268 2008: .264 2009: .262 2010: .257 2011: .255 2012: .255 2013: .253 2014: .251
  19. I don't suppose this fits here but I'm aggravated by the inability of certain hitters (Mauer and Kubel mainly) for address defensive shifts. As a result they often hit balls hard, but right at fielders. Can't they adjust? Do they even try to adjust? Kubel could certainly, in the correct game-situation, lay down a bunt. A bunt is a single, damn it. And Mauer seems incapable of beating the shift by altering his approach at all. There are gaps out there just waiting to be pounded. Last night he hit two "doubles" down the left field line that were caught.
  20. I was watching a Dodgers' broadcast and Orel Hershiser was asked about the rash of Tommy John surgeries over the past years and first of all he said he didn't know, but he thought maybe it had to do with specialization - as Seth said may be one of the reasons - at younger and younger ages; that is, in his day kids plays multiple sports and by doing so used all or many parts of their bodies, while nowadays a pitcher will only pitch and thus over-tax his arm and not really develop the rest of his body. I'm saying it crudely, but that was his general point.
  21. Twins Fan From Afar, you write that Vargas is "destined to be a designated hitter." But he has played 1B five years in the Minors ... is there tangible evidence that he is an incapable first-baseman? Anyone?
  22. This idea makes a great mental image. Somebody should Photoshop it. Every MLB team could have a Mount Rushmore. It could be something to sell at the All-Star Game. Somehow.
  23. But I think you have to be dead (or retired) to be on Mount Rushmore. So I say no Mauer.
