  1. Hardy's glove is an easygoing vacuum cleaner, and that helps too.
  2. I think when the batter steps out of the box, technically this resets the 12-second clock, and there is nothing illegal about stepping out of the box. Do I have that right?
  3. If the pitch clock is implemented, I hope, hope, hope that it isn't something the TV viewer sees on their screen! Could you imagine anything more maddening than watching that thing count down, and the inevitable anticlimax of the horn seldom, if ever, sounding? So if they keep it off the screen, I approve, I guess. Though I think limiting relief pitching is really where the time saving will come.
  4. RE BABIP: Burdi's was .406. We're supposed to accept that this means he was unlucky, but couldn't it also mean that batters, when they did connect with his fast ball, laced it around the diamond with impunity?
  5. It looks like I've come onto this thread a day late, so if anyone's still reading, hello. The one thing that irks me is the sheer number of pitching changes that occur, on average, in major league baseball games. This is a fairly modern phenomenon and it's getting "worse" year after year. Baseball has made all kind rules over the years to make the game better. How about limiting the number of relief pitchers that can be used in a game? I hope the Commissioner thinks about it. It wasn't a "problem" that needed to addressed 30 years ago, but it needs to be addressed now. I did some research last summer: Here is an example. in 2013, 2.9 relievers were used by each team per game. In 1973, 1.37 relievers were used by each team per game. In other words, in 40 years the use of relief pitchers has literally more than doubled.
  6. If it wasn't for the game threads I couldn't get through a game. They're funny to read and participate in.
  7. Actually both his parents were ballet dancers. Maybe the Twins want to bring in the dancing German crowd to the ball park.
  8. It looks like the Sox are pushing Rodon too fast. He needs a good year at AAA, if not another. I may be wrong, of course.
  9. The Millers played at Metropolitan Stadium from 1956 through 1960, which means Yaz and Gene Mauch called the Met home.
  10. John, Is that Midway Stadium, in St. Paul? And the Millers played at Nicollet Park, which was built long before the Twins were a glint in anyone's eye, so what competing stadiums are you referring to? Or is the Met in Bloomington the Minneapolis stadium? (I sound stupider with each sentence I type!)
  11. Here's a bookend for you. I was a security guard (Simms) in 1981, the Twins last year at the Met. A young Hrbek is basically all I remember.
  12. I would like to see Meyer show up as our savior this year, but his WHIP at AAA last year was 1.4. Surely, even though he's 25, he needs another year trying to figure out the walk problem, which seems only to have gotten somewhat worse. On the other hand, if Meyer were as good as Nolan Ryan (career walk rate of 4.7!) we could live with it. (I just saw that Nolan Ryan never won a Cy Young award, though he lead the league in strike outs 12 times. I did not know that.)
  13. I ran Baerga's Facebook page through two online translators (my Spanish is weak), and near the end he writes, "Above all, thanks to the three pillars of this native sports team: Kenny Vargas, Wicho Figueroa and Martin Maldonado; your example and professionalism taught us to [do things the right way?].
  14. Rumor has it that Hamburger is a real hot dog, but that his fast ball has a lot of mustard on it. Odds are he'll wind up sandwiched between starter and closer, a 7th inning man. Sorry to have wasted your time ...
  15. I think signing Hughes to a contract extension should be the top priority. We have an ace, let's keep him. (Or trade him down the line, like Oakland always does).
  16. I presume Scott Baker is healthy and available. He just turned 33. Last year in limited duty he had a WHIP of 1.19 and a 3.93 SO/W ratio. His ERA was high, but I imagine he would come cheap on a one-year deal. Has he been written off? If so, why?
  17. Can anyone supply specifics about Hunter's supposed (or apparent) drastic decline as an outfielder? In other words, what is behind the metrics, specifically? Does he duck when line drives come at his face? Does he run slower? Does he take terrible routes? Is he afraid of crashing into the fence? Does he dive when he should field the ball? Has his arm strength vanished? Does he make bad decisions on which base to throw to? Does he miss the cutoff man? Does he zone out and forget how many outs there are? I didn't t see him play much in 2014 so I simply don't know any answers to these questions and others I can't think of right now.
  18. I would also add that Tony Oliva didn't begin his minor league career until his age-22 year, and didn't reach the big leagues, outside of a few at bats, until he was 25 3/4 years old. So not only was his career cut short by injury, it never got off to a "natural" start. The fact that he came from Cuba during a period of extraordinary political upheaval (to say the least) to the US to play baseball should be considered as an essential reason for his "late" start in the Bigs.
  19. He is the best player ever - named Wily Mo.
  20. MLB Trade Rumors writes of the "offense-heavy KBO." (not just this season, apparently). My question: What the hell does that mean, specifically? Anybody know?
  21. I went to the Rafters game in Mesa on Saturday night. A few impressions ... Was disappointed that neither Buxton or Kepler were in the lineup. Rosario looked awful at that the plate that day. Adam worse: the other team ran on him with impunity (Little League style). Briefly met Reed's father, which was nice. About 200 people were in attendance on a very warm Phoenix night - don't know why so few. Also, the game was blunder-filled on the defensive side, very subpar.
  22. Thank for your eloquence. I agree wholeheartedly. Baseball is (sh, don't tell anyone) kind of boring without a little repartee on the side.
  23. I think they should extend the mlb season to 312 games to give a chance to last place teams like the Twins to catch up. Year-round-baseball. Oh, god, no!
