  1. SD... was the 'slow' CR gun still reading 92-94 on Romero's FB last night? If so, did he maintain it throughout the game? The thee pitch sequence in the video above suggested good velocity and great location. Also, while Romero may not have the 6'3" height of a front-line starter, he sure has the powerful lower half of one. His legs are like tree trunks!
  2. I think another thing that predicts he may move quickly is that he is getting great results and still throwing strikes with 67% of his pitches. He sure looks overpowering in this video from last night: http://www.milb.com/multimedia/vpp.jsp?content_id=792334283&sid=milb
  3. Sounds like Ryan Mills to me... and we all know how well he turned out! http://www.baseballamerica.com/online/features/mills0118.html
  4. He really seems to be susceptible to the proverbial 'big inning'! In his last 4 starts, he has had 3- six run innings and 1 five run inning!
  5. ... or did he miss the 'hit and run' sign? Maybe Molitor was trying to turn the world on it's ear and make Mauer actually swing at a first-pitch strike!
  6. Thanks Jeremy, great article! When I think of first-round slides, I think of Kyle Gibson, a '60' ceiling-low floor college starter whose Junior season was affected by a 'non-pitching' injury. Is there a 'Kyle Gibson' this year, and who might be that be?
  7. Thanks for the video SD! Is that a 'mid-90's' fastball according to the FM or CR gun? The off-speed pitches he threw to the third batter for strike one and the punchout were really impressive.
  8. I am 'assuming' the Twins did try, and that he wasn't able to get his arm loose the day after pitching. I don't think you would send him out (especially at MLB) if that is the case. Again, not all pitchers can go back to back. As an example, Mike Pelfrey said he didn't want to go to the bullpen because he couldn't get his arm loose. While you can still put Pelfrey as a long reliever and not use him every day, that isn't the case for LOOGYs. Now if you think he would do just fine as a long reliever, that is another question.
  9. He is not a LOOGY unless he can pitch back-to-back nights with the same crispness on his pitches. Not all arms can do that. From what I can see, he never has pitched back-to-back in games, but you have to think the Twins have tried to see how his arm bounces back.
  10. The other thing to note is that, unlike Gonsalves and Stewart, this is Jorge's first go-round in the FSL. I think the 12-15 start standard is also there because it increases the likelihood of facing the same team multiple times (as opposed to 5 starts). There is no 'advanced scouting team' in the minors, but I imagine the teams coaches and managers will remember a pitcher's stuff and tendencies from last year.
  11. ...this is just a thought but, with today's news of JO Berrios' call-up, isn't it a real possibility that that is the reason Hicks was removed from the 40-man? Upon being put on waivers (vs. outright release), didn't Hicks have 3 days to accept the assignment? We only found out he was on waivers because he was claimed, otherwise today would have been the third day.
  12. Thanks for the link, Seth. Great photos to look at grips, etc. A little off topic, but do you think that is his phone in his back pocket? If so, I think someone should call when he is on the mound to see whether he (like me) will jump out of his skin when it vibrates! I understand that you might not want to leave it in the dugout, but...
  13. What about Jesse Crain... I guess that is still a pretty small list!
  14. Don't forget that his college season was interrupted by a broken hamate bone. I think starting in E-ton was a good idea, even though he was 21.
  15. Maybe they were just trying to save some 'monograming' money on their uniform bills.
  16. He was 2 for 4... not really much to hang your hat on. Are you more concerned with success rate, or relative lack of attempts?
  17. Just for the record, Buxton's career Minor League stolen base success rate is 78% (94/121) which is, in so sense of the word, bad.
  18. Also, Kevin Kiermaier achieved those WAR numbers while being successful in only 5 of 9 stolen base attempts. Seth, I didn't see any prediction for Buxton's SB and CS. Do you have any thoughts? I know he won't be on base (especially first) very often, and his technique needs work, but I would like to see 30 SB at a 75% clip.
  19. I don't think there are any maturity restrictions on the MVP award... plenty of players have won it who 'have some growing up to do' !
  20. I think if Santana could hit like Sano, they wouldn't be too worried !
  21. When he was skipper and faced situations where people were playing out of place, TK would always say that you don't want to downgrade at both spots. I agree, and I think Plouffe is definitely a better defender at 3rd base... making it an easy choice for me. I don't know exactly which aspect (height, weight, or inexperience) of Sano has people worrying about his health in the outfield (although quality of play, I understand). However, if weight is the issue, I got to shake Kirby Puckett's hand in 1994, and he made me (at 5'10" and 230 lbs) look svelte. And I would bet Delmon Young weighed as much as Sano, and he was 2 inches shorter.
  22. Nothing ventured, nothing gained...
  23. I know it is going to be tough, but some times you just have to go with what you believe. I also think that it is going to be a learning curve (perhaps those last two words quite literally). I may catch a lot of heat in April, May and into June; but I think his numbers will continue to get better and better throughout the year. To me, if Buck fails to produce at that level, the most likely culprit will be injury or being worn down due to the long season.
