Article: Tendering Casey Fien: Pros And Cons
TRex replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
The thing I like about Fien is that he can go back to back to back games, or give you multiple innings. Those reliever are hard to find, and every bullpen needs at least 1. And when he is on a roll, he is just fine in the 8th inning. Just don't write his name down in ink! -
Article: To Tender Or Not To Tender
TRex replied to Seth Stohs's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Remember that we signed Sam Fuld off waivers, which is, by definition, someone who has no trade value! But seriously, is Milone really worth more now than when we acquired him? He is closer to FA, more expensive, and no longer has options remaining?- 68 replies

Article: Looking Back: Twins 40-Man Roster Additions
TRex replied to Seth Stohs's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
With his injury history, if he was down to 93-94 at the end of the season like someone stated as a firsthand report, I do not think he will be taken.- 21 replies

Article: Looking Back: Twins 40-Man Roster Additions
TRex replied to Seth Stohs's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
The bolded part made me spit coffee on my computer... I mis-read it as 'he was called up (to the Twins) in September and pitched in a couple of games'! I was wondering how in the hell I could have missed something like that! I think your syntax here is correct, but let's just openly state that he pitched for ROCHESTER in September after other pitchers were called up!- 21 replies

I agree with you... The only exception being that if he and his father are playing on the same team!

Doh! I thought HiaP was asking (you to ask) Corey if HE had any thoughts about management turning him into a starter! Sorry HiaP -

I am confused... Williams has never started as a pro, are the Twins NOW considering switching him? -

Article: AFL Recap Week 5: Bullpen Dominates
TRex replied to Steve Lein's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Has anyone improved their standing since July 18th than Trevor Hildenberger? It seemed like he was destined to be stuck in CR (no offense, SB) all season. Then he was finally moved up to FM and had some success, and is now pitching some of his best ball at the end of a long season that has seen him throw >75 innings. Today's game is at Peoria, complete with PitchFX. While his fastball doesn't light any radars up, he has a tremendous amount of break on it. His other pitches seem to have a lot of movement as well (although he was up in the zone too much).- 9 replies

I know you said that the 5'8" mark is no longer in play, but I can't remember what you said his current size is. Could you remind us? Thanks! -
Article: Twins Trade Aaron Hicks To Yankees For Catcher
TRex replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I realize it is always a slippery slope when we try to psychoanalyze a player, but... While it is one thing to say that Aaron Hicks would make a great platoon player in RF (and that was my dream), I do not see anything in Hick's personality that suggests that situation would be acceptable to him. Painting CF's with broad brush strokes, they are the MLB equivalent of wide receivers. I highly doubt that someone who announces to his employer that he is giving up switch hitting would accept the yoke of 'platoon outfielder'... especially as the RH tandem. This move says to me that Buxton will be starting in CF no matter what, and they felt they had no choice but to move Hicks. I wish I could wish Hicks the best (I always think it is bad form when fans boo AJ), but as someone said before, I can't root for any Yankee (although I wouldn't boo Jeter either). -

Article: The Trade Market For Trevor Plouffe
TRex replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I know it is just a small point, but I haven't seen it mentioned elsewhere, so here goes... While it is undeniable that two years of control are better than one, remember that Plouffe was a super-2. That means that his last year of team control will be his 4th in arbitration. From what I have seen, the discount associated with the 4th year is not nearly as steep as the others. If Plouffe is awarded the projected $8 million this year, he will be $12-14 next year. This is still less than the $16 million qualifying offer, but (IMHO) will be too much for half of MLB teams to pay for a role player. -
What I really like about this year's top-15 is that 12 will be within spitting distance of the big leagues at some point this year (i.e. AA or higher). AAA: Buxton, Kepler, Polanco, Walker; Berrios, Burdi, Chagois, MeyerAA: Vielma; Stewart, Gonsalves (after starting in high-A), Jay (after starting in high-A) I remember all of those lean year years with the Twins roster and knowing our great prospects would not be able to help (that year). Now, even with Sano, Rosario, May and Duffy graduating, our farm system is still stocked with nearly-ready prospects.

I am not sure whether projecting Vielma's hitting potential based upon the 6'2" Gregorious is apt, but I really agree that one needs to look at the numbers in the context of the league as a whole. The averages for the FSL this year were .248/.307/.337 (avg/obp-w/o HBP/slg), meaning Vielma's line of .266/.313/.323 was about league average. * note, I understand that those are really low numbers, but it is what it is... With that in mind, I don't understand why it is a travesty that a young, slick fielding SS who swings a league average bat (or better, with Seth's report that he hit 298/.357/.329 in his final 90 games) and steals a lot of bases at~75% is your 15th best prospect! <with tongue firmly in cheek> Good God, man, don't you remember when NICK BLACKBURN was our #1 prospect!

With Meyer, Thorpe and Vielma out of the top-10, I guess that means Burdi made it. I personally would still bet on Meyer over Burdi, but that's splitting hairs.

I favor the comp of Rosario and Jacque Jones (albeit with a better arm and capable of hitting same-siders!). It would be great if he could increase his OBP, but not if it comes at the expense of being aggressive. While you can't have a whole team of hackers... it's kind of nice to have someone that can get a big hit against anyone (including Chris Sale). While he isn't Puck or Vladimir Guerrero, he can still be the same kind of disruptive force, but lower in the lineup.

I think it is a fact that, as long as Walker's K-rate and BB-rate don't improve, there will always be this much pessimism because these parameters have proven to be excellent 'predictors' of future performance. It's easier to win at the Roulette table by placing your money on 'black' than on a specific number... but the payoff isn't as great. Perhaps another way to look at it is with horse racing. The goal of minor league development is to get a group of players who produce at MLB and not just a single player (i.e. a Trifecta instead of just a single winner). Therefore, I think prospectors (myself anyway) try to avoid long shots. However, if you are picking a favorite prospect, long shots are great!

I am sure Dougie M. wants to be a manager rather than a coach, and although we have seen plenty of 'apprenticeships', I don't think Molly and Doug have that kind of special relationship (Paul is a thinker and tactician, Meintkiewitz the gut instinct shouter). I think they would be much more like Gardy/Molly rather than Kelly/Gardy. It might work for a year, maybe two (which, I guess, is 'multi-year'), but I don't think it is a long term possibility.

Is it wrong for me to hope for Sauerbraten... at least for 2015, anyway? -
Burdi has been really good since being demoted to High-A in July. Is there any chance he could still make an appearance in a Twins uniform when Chattanooga's season ends? If so, could they replace him on the AFL roster?
