  1. Actually, I'm not that pessimistic long-term. I agree with Terry Ryan building up the depleted pitching ranks. A few elbow and shoulder injuries might make these look like bad moves, but you have to have [pitching and the risks go with the acquisition of hurlers. That said, our pitchers may not be the only ones hurling next season.
  2. I know it's too early if the purpose was to debate the opening day line-up. But my nefarious purpose is to try to show that those who claim that the Twins will have a stellar line-up, haven't thought it through. They need alot of luck or a few more players added if they are going to be better than a 90 loss team in 2013.
  3. Not interested in Seattle's cr*#^py (and old) cast-off, just because he used to be good a few years ago. Big mistake to sign Chone.
  4. Here's what it should be presuming the current roster (IThis is tough): 1. Mastro CF 2. Mauer C (I know, they'll always bat Joe #3, but he should be #2) 3. Doumit DH 4. Willingham LF 5. Morneau 1B 6. Plouffe 3B 7. Parmalee RF 8. Dozier 2B 9. Florimon SS Starting Pitcher: Worley That's the makings for another 90 loss team in 2013, imho. Hopefully, we can later ride prospects to the promised land like the KC Royals have (ooops, bad analogy, I'm actually more optimistic because of TR's prior success)
  5. Why sign two $10 million pitchers? The Twins should sign one of the top available free agent pitchers like Grienke, Jackson, McCarthy, or Dempster and fill out the rotation with Diamond, Gibson, Worley and allow someone to earn the fifth spot in training camp (if nobody earns the spot ofr someone is injured, take a cast-off from anther team at the end of Spring Training).
  6. Terrry Ryan needs to save us from discussions like this by making a trade or signing a free agent or disciplining a player for a DWI (Oh that's Rick Spielman's job, sorry) . . .
  7. The Twins need some potential elite pitching - and I think 2015 looks more likely for a guy currently in high-A Ball. They have a glut of talent in the outfield. This trade makes uber-sense. Pitchers can blow out their arms, and that may happen with this guy. BUT, that doesn't mean the Twins shouldn't stock up on potentially good and great pitching. An outfield of Parmalee in right, Revere in Center and Willingham in right is not much of a downgrade (especially if Revere's arm continues to show growing strength). Other good (maybe great) outfielders waiting in the wings.
  8. In the pantheon of worst Twins (includes expectations and hype vs. results, disappointment and embarassing intangibles) - Nishi has securted the shortstop position: 1b: Scott Stahoviak 2b: Tommy Herr SS Nishi 3b: Danny Valencia c: Dave Engel OF: Rick Sofield, Dan Ford (all on those intangibles), Willie Norwood Four man Pitching Rotation: Terry Felton, Willie Banks, Steve Carlton, Nick Blackburn (someone from this year's staff has to make it!!! And Blackie was given big bucks and then proceeded to stink it up) Closer: Ron Davis
  9. What deal to send Nishi back to Japan? It's been proposed, but until that happens - he's still in the mix. Like it or not!
  10. It's alot like Blyleven. It depends on who is on the ballot and how close Fred is to dropping off of it. Very good numbers, and a very good player who deserves to get in after a while. He never was a first ballot type guy.
  11. Don't trade for a SS. Someone must step up between Florimon, Dozier, Escobar and even Nishioka (very good last two weeks of season at Rochester - raising his average from .245 to .258). So, don't waste any of our resources on a veteran - The Twins need soemone in their system to step in and do the job.
  12. The best I can say is that he looks better at the plate, despite the lack of hits. He seems to be driving the ball better. He is doing a little more than slapping it. The fielding? That's another story. Maybe he has a mental block once he gets to "the show"; sort of like Dave Engel not being able to throw back to the pircher.
  13. This is a Twins team witt one glaring weakness: Starting Pitching. Fix that and their won loss record turns aroundf fast. They have a great line-up, adequate defense (it could be better) and decent relief pitching. Despite their record, this is not a time to completely blow up the roster with bad trades (but they should always be open to improve the team through good trades, there should be very few untouchables on this team). The formula for success in the next five years is to add to the starting pitching staff now and add one or two rookies a season to maintain adequacy to excellence. Add one or two free agent starters (or thru trades) and hope for Baker to bounce back, and Hendrix and Gibson to provide some help sometime next year. The Twins will just have to eat Blackburn's contract if they are fortunate enough to put together a decent rotation which makes Blackie expendable.
  14. Twins are setting up a battle for middle infield positions next year in spring training: between Dozier (SS is his job to lose, but he'll be on a short leash), Casilla (maybe pronounced Kah-See Ya Later), Jamie Carroll (if he's still around - may be traded), believe it or not - Nishioka, maybe Florimon and who knows.
  15. Presuming there are equally reasonable offers for both: Who would you prefer to go and who to stay? I would vote to keep Span and trade Willingham, because of Denard's defense and reliable record as a leadoff hitter. Trading Willngham opens up left field for the weak armed but speedy Ben Revere. The Twins have Trevor Plouffe to provide power from the right side of the plate, Aaron Hicks may develop power as a switch hitter (he's showing some power in AA-Ball) and it's likely that a right handed power-DH will be available in future free agency.
  16. The Twins are in a position where anyone is expendable (except Mauer, because of the "local-boy" public relations disaster). Those expendables include an aging outifielder like Willingham. Of course, the price has to be reasonable. Otherwise, his homerun power is worth keeping. The Twins future is an outfield with speed with Ben Revere in left (where his weak arm is less of a liability). Between Garcia, Hicks and Benson (and Span if he isn't traded), the Twins are well-stocked for this kind of outfield. The Twins now have power from the right side - his name is Trevor Plouffe, and it looks like Hicks might develop some power from both sides of the plate.
  17. Shouldn't Scott Baker come back from surgery and become part of the mix, too? The Twins can see the many empty seats in the bleachers in the outfield. They have to know that will spread to the season ticket base next year. They have no choice - They have to sign at least one top of the line starting pitcher (and probably one legitimate middle of rotation guy, in other words something better than Jason Marquis) in free agency next year. They have to stop the bleeding in the season ticket base in the off-season by showing that they are serious in creating at least an adequate rotation. They have a decent lineup and the relief corps looks adequate - This can be a pretty decent team by just adding one or two starters in free agency.
  18. Revere's best position is in left field. Willingham has great value and should be traded for that value. Revere moves into left and the Twins find a Right fielder with a decent arm. Do Not Trade Span. He is a very talented center fielder and relaible leadoff hitter who should help this team for several more years. Trade Liriano, but don't expect to get much (maybe a player with potential on another team who could also benefit from a change of scenery - in other words - someone else's enigmatic player like Liriano)

  20. Someday, I hope to read a story about a born-again Buddhist baseball player, or recalcitrant atheist athlete, or the formation of the Fellowship of Hindu Athletes. Those would be remarkable.
  21. I'm hoping for Buxton. Appel and Zimmer are unlikely to be aces, while Buxton is more likely to be a future superstar. It's the baseball draft, so all three could be a bust.
  22. Best pitcher in Twins History - Hard to argue against two CYAs (not that CYA). Now he's come back from surgery to get a no-no. Major kudos to Johan.
  23. The Astros will probably take the local Houston college pitcher Appel. That will leave the Twins with the best overall player in the draft - Byron Buxton. Read the Baseball America bio on him - he's fast, has a great arm and power, a passion for the game too. The Twins should take this BPA, potential future superstar. Probably as much of a no brainer that one can have in the unpredictable baseball . Think back to when the Twins took the local kid Mauer, and left the consensus best player Mark Prior for the the #2 pick. Prior had injuries and didn't amount to much. The MVP and three time batting champ Mauer ended out the best pick. This high, pick the position player. A pitcher is riskier, just one throw away from Tommy John surgery.
  24. This season is shot. The Twins should be building for the future and specifically building a team to play in Target Field. Unfortunately, they do not have many players with trade value. Josh Willingham, however, does have trade value. He is a very good player but he doesn't have the speed to cover the real estate in Left Field. The Twins, need to build an outfield based on speed - Span in Right, Revere in Center, and another speedy guy in Left. Joe Benson and Aaron Hicks are not panning out; they need to trade for another outfield speedster. If the Twins like Pitch To Contact Pitchers (look for pitching to be a big priority in the next two drafts), they need to design their defense (2B, SS, and OF) with the speed to chase down the balls that are hit. Power Hitting needs to be supplied by First Base, Third Base and DH; preferably pull hitters (illustrated by the success of Willingham at the plate at TF). I think Dozier will provide a little power, too (10 hr a year). Mauer, hopefully, can spray doubles to the gap and provide another 10-15 dingers a year. Then we may haved something 3-4 years from now.
  25. Last night, Detroit scored ten runs. Maybe ruining the batter's eye will slow them down. Bring back the Pine Trees. LIFT THE CURSE!
