Article: Three Unique All-Star Journeys
jimbo92107 replied to Cody Christie's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
For some reason I thought Brandon Kintzler was a former starter. I didn't realize that he had to claw his way through the minors, the independents and obscurity to finally find a serious niche in Minnesota. Good for Kintzler!- 3 replies

Tom Froemming, you are an excellent writer. Please keep doing these recaps. They really are fun to read, and you put them together in a very professional way. It's almost like something from Sports Illustrated.

Article: DAAYYAAM. Byron Buxton Is Fast.
jimbo92107 replied to Parker Hageman's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I'm not sure a guy on a 250cc two-stroke dirt bike could have beaten Buxton from first to home. The way he flails his arms, it's almost like somebody is dragging him forward, and he's just trying to stay on his feet. -
Article: Making Zack Granite Fit
jimbo92107 replied to Ted Schwerzler 's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
The Zenn diagram of Twins fielders has a lot of crossover in the corners where the circles connect at their intersections. Technically, Zach Granite does fill some holes in the deficiencies of three out of four outfielders. He's a better contact hitter than either Rosario or Buxton. He's a better outfielder than Grossman. He's faster than all but Buxton, and a better base stealer than all of them, tho Buxton's improved technique could soon make him the best base stealer in Twins history. About my only hesitation on Granite is, there's another guy that might be a better super utility man, with a lot of the same skills. Niko Goodrum. His skills might better fit the team's needs, but his batting average is...below average. A .247 batter in AAA probably translates to a .200 hitter in the show. Otherwise, Granite's .365 (.371 last 10 games) suggests that he'd be a very good hitter in the majors, giving the Twins a good bat, excellent base runner and fielder off the bench. If one of the other guys needs a break or is scuffling at the plate...put in Granite. -
2017 is not THE YEAR. This season is still developmental, a year for testing guys from within the system. This is the year we found out that Berrios is for real, that Mejia is getting solid, that Grossman is actually a ballplayer, not just a walk machine. Let us not pretend that trading prospects for a couple good relievers will send this team to the Series. We have seen some mixed results from the minors this season, but some of them look very good. Busenitz and Hildenberger look good. Jorge looked surprisingly good. All these guys are young, under contract for several years, and appear talented. 2017 should be a season for many more of these tests. We should see Zach Granite, Mitch Garver, Gonsalves, Stewart, Jorge... maybe even a cuppa coffee for Gordon and Vielma. The Twins should tend their own garden, not grab other people's fruit.

We're going to need to acknowledge something about Castro and Gimenez: They're good catchers, not great ones. Both have stronger arms than Suzuki did, both have more pop in the bat than Suzuki did, but neither one is a great defensive backstop. That includes decisions like Castro's last night. To me this game highlights the need for a little better offense from the catching position, and a little more speed available off the bench. I think the Twins have both available in Rochester, New York.

Seth, is Dereck Rodriguez for real? I mean, does he have the stuff to develop into a starter, or is he more of a reliever with just a heater and a slider, something like that?

Felix Jorge should replace Santiago right now. One performance was all I needed to see a pronounced difference in quality. Jorge's game is simply much better than Santiago's. Seth has a reasonable approach for Gonsalves and Romero - bump them up to AAA while we see if Gibson and Mejia continue to perform well. If one or both falters again, I would not hesitate to bring up Gonsalves, and then Romero. Bert Mejia does not concern me much. He seems to be gradually improving at the big league level, getting better at finding his spots and changing speeds. Kyle Gibson is more of a concern because he has been inconsistent in his approach. Gibson simply MUST pitch inside. He MUST change speeds. He MUST find a better mix of pitches. He MUST NOT nibble. He wins when he attacks the zone and keeps hitters off balance.

This might sound a little odd, but I'd like to see the Twins call up Derrick Rodriguez in September, put him in the bullpen. He's a low-risk guy, not on the prospect list, but he's been showing rapid improvement over the last couple years. Meanwhile, I'd call up Gonsalves right after the All Star Game.

Very impressive outing by Felix Jorge. His demeanor on the mound really reminded me of Ervin Santana's. Jorge's first inning was rough, as expected, but after that, he seemed to relax and get better and better. When I first saw his delivery I wondered why he didn't finish bent over like most pitchers, but somehow Jorge makes it work. Very loose wrist action seems to make the ball jump out of his hand. He's going to have to get rid of the hump on his curve ball. Once hitters see that on game film, they'll be all over it. On the other hand, Jorge's change up looked like a serious plus pitch, and he changes speeds and locations really well with his heater. This one-game cuppa coffee will give Felix Jorge exactly the kind of feedback he needs to keep improving his game. Very promising pitcher, better than advertised. This kid could become a good middle rotation starter.

Thing I like about Busenitz is his quiet upper body. He should be able to learn to pick the four corners just like Joe Nathan did. High 90's heat to the corners makes him a really good closer. -
Maybe Tonkin needs to change something, like stand on the first base side of the rubber against lefties. Or change his arm angle. I was a Tonkin fan for a while, but lately I've run out of patience. Maybe he needs a fresh start elsewhere.

Article: Breaking Byron Buxton
jimbo92107 replied to Parker Hageman's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Leg kick's got nothing to do with Buxton's problem. The problem is that his coaches are over-stressing the whole "keep your weight back" nonsense, which is screwing up Buxton's leg drive. Some guys simply can't sit back and generate power; they have to stride forward into the pitch like the old timers. You think Babe Ruth, Willie Mays and Hank Aaron sat back on their rear foot? Heck no, those guys drove hard off the rear foot, strode onto the front foot and clubbed baseballs really hard. What we're seeing right now from Buxton is confused hip action resulting from trying too hard to keep his weight back. He needs to stride forward into the pitch, then let his rear hip rotate forward, so he finishes his follow through straddling home plate, with the rear knee knocking against the inside of his front knee, and the bat wrapped around his neck. Like Adrian Gonzalez. Or pay Chili Davis a million dollars for one week of personal lessons. That would do it, too. -
Looks to me like both Hildenberger and Busenitz have the stuff to stick. Busenitz could develop into a classic closer with upper 90's heat if he learns to pick the 4 corners. Hildenberger could be a long-term mainstay of the Twins bullpen. His change-up is devastating, one of the best pitches I've seen on the Twins. He also threw a curve ball that bent laterally about three feet, starting at the knee of a righty, then hooking wide of the zone. He even threw a 94 mph overhand fastball. His control of the curve was erratic last night, but with more big league innings, that will improve.

After watching Hildenberger last night, I cannot agree. His pace is quick, his delivery time looks about average, and his command, once he settles down, should be much better than his early appearances. Meanwhile, his whippy arm action allows him to mask his change-up really effectively. I think he has a chance to be a "stopper" you can bring in to halt an opponent's rally, as well as a multi-inning guy to soak up innings. Maybe not quite as devastating as Neshek, but Hildenberger looks very promising.

Good recap, Seth. I can't get my morning started without a little Twins Daily, a cup of coffee, an aspirin, an Advil, a little puff of reefer, and a tab of acid. Then I can face the day with a smile! Oh, and a slice of banana. And some milk from that spider thing that lives in my refrigerator...sneaky bastard... Trevor Hildenberger was the best thing about last night's game. Late in a blowout was the best time to see the rookie's full repertoire. Even with the diminished crowd he was working on getting his heart rate down, and this was exactly what he needed. Especially when he whipped that change-up fading down to the arm side. The arm action was fooling 'em. Boston's boys were either whiffing on it or so late they practically screwed themselves into the ground pulling it into the stands just past third base. I can see Hildenberger driving batters batty with combinations of his fastball and change. He even threw a surprise overhand fastball at 94!

Seth summed it up just about perfectly. Gonsalves is the most ready, appears to have the most mature approach + stuff + command. Having three out pitches is nice. I can see using Romero a little in the pen if the Twins are late in contention, but I'm a little leery of pushing a guy's pitch limit, even two years post TJ. Romero throws so hard... Jorge is going to be fun to watch over the next year. He keeps getting a little better all the time, and he appears to be really durable. Let him dominate in AAA before he comes up.

Impressive. Sale didn't throw a single pitch in the zone to Vargas, but the moron behind the plate called two of them strikes. Seemed like that ump reeeeally wanted to help Sale strike out Vargas. -
I would have two cups of coffee waiting for minor league starters, one for Gonsalves just after the All Star break, and one for Felix Jorge shortly after that. Both guys need to see what the show looks like, and both guys could be stashed in the pen, depending how they handle the extra pressure of big crowds, and hitters that don't bite on minor league junk balls.
