  1. Curve ball inside corner. Miggy wanted the heater so bad...!
  2. Ha, I was waiting to see Hildenberger's 3/4 fastball. There it was at 94 mph, for strike 3. Nice. No serious movement, but it's a surprise strike. I'm liking this young man.
  3. Oddly, the one guy whose hitting approach isn't improving much is...Joe Mauer. His efforts to pull inside pitches usually result in either a two hopper to 2B or a dribbler to 1B. He still has oppo power, but not as much as in previous years. Shifts are taking away a lot of oppo hits now, and his pull hitting isn't working.
  4. Impressive growth by Brian Dozier. He has improved his oppo approach so well that it has now become a legitimate threat. At some point teams must reconsider shifting him to left field.
  5. I feel much better about Pressly starting a clean inning than answering the fire bell. He's got stopper stuff, but his command has been inconsistent.
  6. I'll take that pop-out any day from Miguel Cabrera.
  7. I'm not keen on Pressly after Gibson. Too similar, Pressly is like Gibson plus 3 mph, but with a little less command. We'll see.
  8. If Gibson gets the feel of that two-seamer... BUXTON!!!!! Byron Buxton just made the Vikings 53-man roster as a wide receiver. I should add, about Gibson: His two-seamer is a good surprise pitch, but it's not terribly hard to hit. It froze one hitter, but then Cabrerra saw one and said, "if he throws another, I'm gonna...BAM!" ...and then Gibson threw another one to the next guy, and he also blasted it right up the middle. It's not a whiff pitch, it's a surprise back-door pitch. Fact is, Gibson doesn't have any one dominating pitch. He needs to mix up all the factors.
  9. I sang "Tubthumping" at karaoke once. Tried to fall down and stand up each time the song said. Practically had a heart attack, but the audience appreciated the effort...if not the singing.
  10. Polanco has been choosing better pitches and driving the ball. His process at the plate looks good, and he's keeping the bat head cocked longer, so he's got good outward snap. Doesn't mean he'll go on an incredible tear for a month, but he's got his confidence back. The slump is over.
  11. I'm calling it now: Jorge Polanco's slump is so over. The guy is raking and having fun again. Looks like the ballplayer we thought he was this spring. Good to see.
  12. A Big Sexy win for the Minnesota Twins. Skol!
  13. One guy I wish could relax and enjoy himself is Taylor Rogers. He's always so tense on the mound, he doesn't look like he's enjoying himself. If I saw him tossing a ball to himself on the mound, that would be tre cool.
  14. Colon brings the enjoyment of the game with him. I hope to see other Twins players fully enjoying their baseball, the simple pleasures of tossing a ball around, figuring out clever plays, etc.
  15. Okay, I'm officially on Big Sexy Wagon. The man knows how to have fun playing baseball. He tosses the ball to himself on the mound, taps his glove to the cheesy stadium organ, toys with professional hitters like he's always two steps ahead of them. Moar Big Sexy!
  16. Improvements in Byron Buxton's game are going to be gradual and incremental. As an athlete he is supremely gifted physically, but he does not have the baseball.exe program running in his head. He will continue to refine subtle aspects of the game, from just the right weight shift and plan at the plate, to timing a pitcher's move to home before he steals. Fortunately, he appears to be a very hard worker, but it will be a process that will take several years. At the end of that process, Buxton will be a very dominant ballplayer.
  17. ...but he does need to take his walks.
  18. Haven't seen Miguel really rip a baseball in a game lately.
  19. "Rosario had a three-homer game this June, but tonight was the first two-homer game of his career." Dang it, he's getting worse! ;-)
  20. This is why I love watching Eddie Rosario. Who else on this team has the stuff to pull off that gambit, starting with a rocket line drive over the RF's head? Only Rosario. Mauer might drive a double, but he wouldn't induce a balk. Neither would Kepler. Polanco can't hit the ball that hard. The only guy that's got the physical talent, the baseball savvy, plus the cajones gigantes to pull off that stunt is Eddie Rosario.
  21. I did see a camera shot of Colon chatting up Mejia late in the game. It was like he was showing him it's possible to go deep in games without killer stuff.
  22. I think Polanco has lost a little sting in his swing. He should keep the bat head back longer, more like Rosario does. Right now Polanco's bat head is coming around too early, which means he doesn't get much outward snap, which means the barrel isn't traveling as fast as it could or staying square through the hitting zone as long as it could. A round, slap swing is never going to be as powerful or effective as an outward snap-and-carry swing, like Rosario, Morneau or Kepler.
  23. I liked how Castro was sitting on the curve...He knew he couldn't hit Bush's fastball.
  24. Some of Chief's stories may be apocryphal, but it's not the end of the world.
