  1. I'm in favor of a five-second pitch clock. Discuss!
  2. Could Gonzalez be a victim of the current fad of elevating the launch angle? Maybe in 2018 he elevated slightly, and the result was balls getting caught by outfielders instead of falling for hits. Hit the ball flat, Marwin!
  3. I, for one, hope Jonathan Schoop tears the cover off the ball against the Orioles. Long live the chip on the shoulder. Buy a party size bag of shoulder chips, Mr. Schoop!
  4. I keep waiting for Brian Navarreto to separate himself from the pack. Swing flat, kid! All you gotta do is hit line drives to the gaps! Smell those ribbies like Redmond!
  5. I miss Justin Morneau, but I suspect he's pretty happy with his life right now. Go Twins!
  6. Reminds me of that story Bill Murray told in Caddy Shack, the one about caddying for the Dali Lama. Not the story itself mind you, but his line in the end. "So, I got that going for me." The team today is the one we're cheering for, the one we will doubtless be cursing for its deficiencies sometime around the All Star break. It's great that the Twins have highly ranked prospects in their organization, but that's actually been true for a while now. We're supposed to be firmly into a wave of players that were supposed to be lifting the team into contention, at least within the humble division. Nope, nope, nope. Injuries, embarrassments, and a failure to lay off outside curve balls has been the yearly gruel of our disappointment. Hope for the best, prepare for the worst. We are, after all, mostly from Minnesota. Dress warm and stay safe, comrades.
  7. Yet another reason to keep Willians Astudillo: So Twins pitchers don't have to face him. If this guy is turning into a one-man wrecking crew with his bat, don't we want him on OUR side??
  8. Cron's 2018 stats suggest that he was swinging from the heels to hit more dingers, and thereby to increase his market value. Might even be why Tampa let him go: They want a 1B with a more rounded game, maybe a better fielder. Frankly, I don't see much difference between Cron and Austin, except Austin is younger, cheaper, and possibly a better fielder. Why'd they sign Cron? Competition?
  9. "5: Jake Cave will endure a nightmarish sophomore slump." This prompts a question: Where do sophomore slumps come from? Do 2nd year players try to do too much, and wind up flailing? Do pitchers adjust, and somehow avoid making mistakes just against these guys? Do 2nd year players unconsciously relax and assume they're going to get better? Do they simply lose their chill and become drama queens for a year? Honestly I don't know.
  10. Glad they signed Polanco, that guy is a genuine baseball player. Still wondering about Kepler. His window is narrowing quickly, with hot bats like Rooker and Kirilloff knocking on the door within the next year. Max better figure out how to mash lefty pitching pretty quick. Take some lessons from Morneau.
  11. Stick him in the pen, and tell him his new nickname is "Johan." If he develops that third pitch during the season, try him out as a starter. Otherwise, leave him in the pen for this season, then re-evaluate next spring.
  12. Let's see... - A walk counts as a run. That'll speed up the inevitable. - 7-inning games. - Robo-Ump calls balls and strikes. A strike makes a big cowbell sound. A ball makes a sad trombone wah-wah-wah. Strikeout sound is whiny kid laughing. Walk sound is hockey announcer, "He scorrrres!" - No national anthem. No invocations of sky daddies. - The ceremonial first pitch counts as a ball or a strike, with a batter. No more mister nice guy. - Beers are back to five bucks. That'll fill yer friggin stands, y'all! - Expand active rosters to 35, but reduce bench length five feet. - All new baseballs delivered by farm animals. Or dragged by squirrel chariot. - Foul balls caught by fans = two beers. Dropped fouls = Ejection. Bring a glove! - If hitter's bat flies into audience, they must throw it back, and the hitter must catch it on the fly, or he's ejected. - No fat players allowed. Time to draw the belt line. - All stadiums must offer Cobb Salad. I like Cobb Salad.
  13. The most important thing for the Twins FO to prepare for injuries is to keep telling us fans that we're a small market team, and that we're still a couple years from making a run...kind of like nuclear fusion - just a few years out of reach, stop complaining beeches, buy moar season tickitz!
  14. Kepler should take hitting lessons from Justin Morneau. Kep could become that kind of hitter.
  15. 2019 should be another season of extensive experimentation, especially with the pitching staff. AA and AAA are loaded with arms that should get a look at the bigs this season. Like a few others, I'm getting fed up with excuses for Buxton and Sano, and even Kepler is wearing out my patience. These guys better come to spring training ready to stomp other teams with every aspect of their play. Otherwise, younger, hungrier players might start getting playing time. I'm all for getting Rooker and Gordon up for their first cuppa. Can't wait to see Lewis and Killeroff tear it up in ST. Also I wanna see if Gonzo and Stewart have found something new to show us.
  16. The Twins could use a vacation from the injury bug this season. Wouldn't it be great to see just normal aches and pains, and nothing catastrophic for a while? Throw with your legs, beeches!
  17. Agree with big dog. What Stewart said here is very encouraging. He has realized that pitching is a serious art, a discipline that requires tinkering with some very subtle issues, like the exact grip for a particular pitch, the exactly right velocity and placement, etc. The fact that he mentions these fine distinctions implies that he also believes he has a good chance of mastering them. As we know, the Twins drafted Stewart in large part because they recognized in him a very high level of athleticism, which includes an ability to learn and hone new skills. Maybe what we are seeing is a young pitcher at the threshold of achieving his high potential. If Kohl Stewart can forge himself into a Brad Radke, I think we would all be very happy.
  18. Living in San Diego, I do kinda miss Twins Fest. On the other hand, I don't miss shoveling snow, not one bit. Pitchers and catchers, pack yer bags!
  19. I would rather have a solid defensive catcher at an affordable price, even if his BA is .200. Hitters like Kirilloff are rare, too. A player that hits in the .300 range with power belongs in the outfield, like Bryce Harper. Twins made that mistake with Mauer, and the Giants made that mistake with Posey. Great bats are hard to find, and catchers get beat up. Same thing could happen to Realmuto at any time. A few fastballs to the facemask, and he's out for half the season. A hard slide collision, and he's out for a year. I would rather see the Twins get Drew Butera back, and keep their great farm hitters.
  20. This Twins organization is rich...in AAAA starters. The difference between that and a 5th starter appears to be the flip of a coin. That said, something usually happens to shake up the starting rotation. 2019 probably will be another season where the Twins use more starting pitchers than just about any other team. Let's hope 2018 was just a particularly ugly year for injuries and other mishaps. A relatively healthy season could see this team a lot more competitive than last year.
  21. “I want to make 20 wins and put my team in the playoffs … I want to play in October with my team.” Ohmigod, is Berrios demanding a trade??
  22. If only one of them were Korean... The Twins don't make moves like this. The Twins throw crazy money at dubious retread pitchers coming off TJ surgery, not perennial all-stars at the peak of their careers.
  23. Since you're using a poker analogy, I'll ante in with some flawed logic. In poker, a 2 of any suit isn't worth much. Yet if the Twins starting rotation had four 2's, they'd be in amazing shape. That's all we're asking...four #2 starters!
  24. Hildy's command degraded in the second half, plus guys figured out his overhand fastball. Accurate assessment that he needs another pitch. Also true that the Twins need more relief options, so they don't wear out guys like Hildy. To that topic, what the hell's been happening to all the relievers in the minors? Seems like only a couple have made it, the rest are washing out for one reason or another. If winning is 60 percent pitching, the Twins are missing 50 percent of 60 percent.
