  1. Not so fast on Mr Pohlad buying the steaks. With new tax rules, he's not able to write that off. Mr Pohlad: "Great meeting! Best of luck, Joe. Waiter, separate checks!"
  2. Couldn't agree more. It's also about the experience. Go to an NFL game, and you really see how much downtime there is. Baseball is now like that, Between inning breaks are too long (except when you have to get rid of 6 beers), but they'll never cut commercials, soooo: I'm not in favor of rules dictating how long or short a pitcher stays in. That fundamentally changes the game. I am in favor of a pitch clock. Knock 5 minutes off. I'm in favor of limiting mound visits to 1 per pitcher (either a Catcher or a Coach), & said visitor must at least jog to mound, followed by timed visit. knock 5 minutes off. Relief Pitcher must either sprint to mound, or be driven by big helmet golf car. He gets 5 warm ups, then let's go. Knock 5 minutes off. Leaving the park at 10:30 means getting home at 11:30 (in 1st tier suburbs), asleep at 12/12:30. My wife gets up at 5 to go to work. Every game is a battle to keep her there until the end, and she LIKES baseball. Something must change. There's 162 games. 2:30 or 2::45 is long enough, but don't fundamentally change the game.
  3. I know this never happens, but any chance Mauer stays on for 1-2 more years at a paltry sum of $2-3M/year, and tells the Pohlads to spend the extra money to get him a ring?
  4. Strikeouts are boring, Besides that, they're fascist. I heard that someplace before. A couple of the World Series games were ludicrous as far as HRs go. The ball couldn't stay in the park, and that was with some of the best pitchers in the game. There is something to be said about stringing together hits, manufacturing runs, etc.
  5. I'd also be interested in John Castino's brief time at 3B, before his back gave out.
  6. Seems to me a no-brainer to make May a starter again, and hope he fulfills his destiny, even if that's as our #3. During the offseason, go sign a couple quality relievers (including a closer). If/when the Twins are competing for the division in June, and IF there's a glaring hole in the rotation, go get a quality starter.
  7. We need Willingham back on the 40-man, just in case we need him against Chapman!
  8. Anyone not named Posey, Perez, or Molina equals "interchangeable". Some might hit better, some may call a better game, and some may throw out runners, but they're only going to do one of these three, and we'll be pining for the days we had a catcher that did one of the other two.
  9. I agree with most of the posters, that 2016 was a disaster, but this team should still probably be around 70-75 wins (basically the same team won 83 the year before). I don't believe we can blame the FO quite yet, for a number of reasons. 1st, they got a very late start. 2nd, they needed time to evaluate everything they have from low A to the majors. 3rd, there's still a lot of time between now and P & C reporting. 4th, Dozier is the only viable "trade piece" they have, and he's a 2B. The market for 2B is not great. Should they have pulled the trigger for DeLeon? maybe. But only time will tell. They still may get a much better return, or DeLeon may turn out to be a bust. We lost 100+. This year, as stated, we may do it again. This turnaround will take time. Whether its Falvey or TR, this team is too far away to go out & pickup one missing piece. We need about 5 missing pieces.
  10. I really can't say. That's what I'd always heard, that this was an "understanding". The only thing I could think of was Ryan would've been crucified in public opinion & the press for giving Perkins an official No Trade Contract.
  11. True, but Mauer's deal was hardly very "team friendly". Perkins could've gotten more money from a lot of other teams, but wanted to stay in MN. Whether or not you agree with the deal premise, it was an understanding between Perkins & Terry Ryan, and Ryan wasn't the type of guy to break that promise. My guess is Ryan's way of thinking was, we're small market, and got a very team friendly bargain because I struck this deal. If I break this deal, my word is worthless, and we'll never get another "hand-shake" deal again.
  12. Perkins was a different deal. He signed a very team-friendly contract with the promise from management they would NOT trade him.
  13. Integrity and honesty. A class act all the way! I didn't agree with everything he did, but some things I didn't agree with worked, so I'm not going to dwell on those that didn't.
  14. makes you wonder if the Pohlads went to Antony, and asked him if he'd be content to be their puppet, and do their bidding.
  15. Also not a Gladden play by play guy, but do like Provus. Oftentimes, with the radio on, you're doing something else at the same time, so a little voice inflection lets you know something just happened. With Gladden, there can be 5 runs scored, and you don't even know it. I wasn't a John Gordon fan for the opposite reason. He'd jump out of his chair for a warning track fly ball. But at least you paid closer attention.
  16. How about "FRANCE".
  17. Keep him. As already stated, it'll cost the same to bring in another #3. He's a good clubhouse guy, and can help the young kids coming up. You need some veterans on a young team, and he's as good as any we'll get. Dump Nolasco for anything. Now there's room for one guy. Dump Milone for anything, now we got two spots. I doubt that's going to block anyone in the minors.
  18. #4 starters grow on trees? The Twins have spent a lot of (widely discussed) money on mediocre starters. In FA, that's the price (see Pelfrey/Correia). Sadly, they were signed as hopefully #3 starters, and evolved into #4's, or just started looking like #2 (and no, I don't mean #2 starters). Jettisoning all these starters means young guys getting call ups, which I'm in favor of. But when they get shelled in the 3rd inning, that means we need even more guys in the bullpen, which has been far from a strong point of this team. Berrios is ready (if he doesn't implode again), but what's behind him? You need #3's & 4s on your team, and letting Santana go with a couple years of the contract, means adding FA starters in the offseason. The cost for a #3-4 nets you the likes of: E Santana/R Nolasco/P Hughes/M Pelfrey/K Correia. So what did we save?
  19. I believe this article nails it. The team overperformed last year. they've underperformed this year. Who are they really? I think somewhere in between. They missed a lot of things in the offseason (which has been pointed out repeatedly in TD), but I still don't believe this team is a 110 game loser. Starting pitching at the beginning of the year wasn't that bad, but hitting was. When the hitting got a little better, the pitching suddenly took a nosedive. When the starters did pitch well, the bullpen would blow it. In the beginning, we were counting on the veterans, until the young guys figured it out. Had they vets done better, maybe they win 5-10 more games. Had a couple young guys performed, add another 5-10 more games. So if a few things go better this year (which they did last year), we're somewhere between "still not contending", to best case, hovering around 500, but neither case is the fiasco year we've had so far. .
  20. I agree 100% with this. The one name not mentioned is Plouffe, but he should be first on the block, no matter what they could or could not get for him. He is definitely blocking the future. Looking to the future is good, but you need someone around to teach the kids coming up how to play at this level, and how to not be satisfied just being here. I think Dozier fits this bill. Giving up Santana for nothing makes no sense. If they get a high potential return, then go ahead, but I don't see that happening. Therefore, keep him on the roster, because it will cost even more to replace his mediocrity. He's not blocking any youth movement, and is a good clubhouse guy.
  21. I agree, some people will always be upset about anyone making millions... or even $100,000's... or a dime more than they're making. But as posted a few times here, baseball contracts are guaranteed. Perkins isn't the first to get a contract, then get injured. He won't be the last. Injuries are part of the game. All i'm saying is, by bringing up the money part, he's opening up a subject that doesn't need to be brought up. Look at this post as a prime example. We're talking about it at length, and had he not brought it up, there wouldn't be calls for him to donate it to charity/give it back to the Pohlads/etc.
  22. I don't think he should've brought up the money part at all. He took a lower salary from the Twins to stay a Twin. He owes no apology. Hit Sh*t ton of money could've been a lot more from some other team that would be paying him more to not pitch, so even if he never pitches again, I have no problem with him taking the money. Just don't talk about it.
  23. When they found themselves stuck in this position of having Plouffe & Park, I don't think they had a choice but to declare it permanent. Otherwise, I'm sure they were concerned Sano would've lolligagged around in the OF or pouted until they moved him back to 3B.
