  1. I get the hate. He was a major part of the worst pitching staff in baseball last year. The thing that most seem to discount is that we just got his worst year. Most guys coming off of TJ (baker) wouldn't have pitched until August. With a full season of conditioning and more time post TJ, I expect Pelfrey to post a sub 5 ERA and that is a still at only 5.5 million. He won't be our ace, but then again we probably won't have an ace in 2014. I think Terry deserves a lot of credit. He swallowed his pride, signed a bunch of average starting pitchers for more than he thought they were worth, but he signed them none the less. The team they put on the field will have a change to win every day. I doubt they will finish above .500, but the starting pitching will give us a chance to win. That was not the case the last two seasons.
  2. This was just posted on MLB trade rumors "The Orioles discussed a big-league deal with Jason Kubel's agency, Wasserman Media Group, MASNsports.com's Roch Kubatko reports. Kubel ended up signing a minor-league deal with the Twins, however, and Kubatko suggests that's because Kubel is very confident he'll make the team in Minnesota" Sounds like Kubel wanted a chance to play and felt this was a good spot for him. Nice to know he had choices. Also that he didn't feel it was necessary to sign a contract with guaranteed money. He has to feel that last year was just an aberration and that things will fall back into place if he gets in the right situation.
  3. I think everyone would prefer Garza over Pelfrey, that is why he is looking at 15 million a year as apposed to the 5 or 6 we are offering Pelfrey. the problem is that we need another starting pitcher. If we lose out on Garza, we have to go to plan B, if we lose out on plan B we have to keep going down the line. In my mind, that is what happened last year. Terry wasn't aggressive enough early on and by the time he had lost out on the players he wanted there was nothing of value left. Unfortunately we can't wait for Garza to make a decision. We have to continue to pursue other options, while waiting on and negotiating with him. I would definitely go 4 years with Garza. As was mentioned, if we have to give him an option for a 5th year, so be it. If that isn't enough for him, it may be time to move on and look at other options, or more aggressively look at other options.
  4. I like the sound of message. It would be really nice to start next season with last years starters in Rochester, with the idea that they only get a chance in Minnesota when and if someone goes on the DL. I'll be happy if he signs one more starter and an outfielder. Even if that starter turns out to be Pelfrey.
  5. I could be wrong, but I don't think the Twins are making a choice between Arroyo and Garza. If we can believe the rumors, the choice is between Arroyo and Pelfrey. I'm still undecided on the better option. It sounds as if we have already offered Pelfrey a two year contract and we are using Arroyo as leverage or else there is a legitimate chance that if Pelfrey does turn down the current 2 year contract, they will offer something similar to Arroyo 2 or maybe three years. What do you think? Who would you rather have Pelfrey for two or Arroyo for 3?
  6. We really need some depth in the outfield, especially center field. I hope Presley and Hicks show some improvement over last year, but if not Rajai Davis is a nice insurance policy. A veteran that has been around a while. If everyone plays well and Davis is the odd man out, he could still fill the role of pinch runner, late inning defensive specialist. Also, Davis seems like the perfect platoon outfielder. Seems to hit lefties well and could spell Arcia, Parmelee or Presley whenever we face a southpaw.
  7. I still see another starting pitcher being added. If I had to guess, I think it will be Pelfrey. I also think we will add an outfielder. I can see Willingham and Arcia starting at the corners, but I think it would be a mistake to start the season with only Presley, Mastroianni and Hicks as our only options in center. Yes, I know that Buxton is on the way, but I honestly don't think he will see Minnesota in 2014. I haven't given up hope on Hicks. I think he will turn things around and have a solid year, but I can also see Terry taking a long look at that position and thinking we need some help for at least 2014 and possibly longer. Pre-winter meeting prediction. We add another starting pitcher and a center fielder.
  8. Wow, great read. Makes you glad you aren't a Mariners fan. Situations like this do not help your team succeed.
  9. Terry is not the warm and fuzzy kind of boss that you run up to and give a hug. Makes perfect sense.
  10. this makes perfect sense. Last off season, Terry met with every free agent personally and couldn't give the money away. He learned something. Don't meet with them until they accept the money. Terry is no fool. What ever it takes to win.
  11. I would like to add Anderson to the roster, but I don't think we would need to offer up Perkins or anything close to that value. He is a starter that will make 8 million this year and I think (from memory) 12 million in 2015. He doesn't have a spot in Oakland's rotation. They have to move him, they have no choice. They are not going to eat that much salary. He hasn't pitched much because of TJ and assorted injuries over the last 3 years. Again, I'm all for making the trade. We just don't have to and shouldn't give up that much in value to take on roughly 20 million in salary.
  12. I think Nolasco, Hughes and Garza will look good leading our staff this year, but three years from now I have a feeling we will have a different view. If we are truly going to raise our expectations to complete for a spot in the post season, we will need better starting pitching than this. Either through additional FA signings or getting some help from our existing minor leaguers. I like the flexibility of being able to go out and sign a big name starter as we get closer to where we want to be. Spending all of our money now seems foolish. One of those three will not turn out to be a productive starting pitcher in year two three or four. No inside knowledge, just the law of averages.
  13. I agree with you for the most part, but again we would be eating some salary for them. He will not be starting, that is why they are trying to unload him. I trust Terry on this one to set the value and not get fleeced.
  14. Let's make it happen. I' m sure Billy isn't going to give him away though.
  15. I agree, I thought Salty would get a bigger deal. After McCann he was being touted as the next best option. I guess most teams didn't see it that way. I don't like Arencibia. I don't think he is that good defensively and he is about as good as Drew with a bat in his hands (other than the home runs of course).
  16. 3 years for 21 million. what does that mean for the Twins? Do we just sit tight and see how our current crop of catchers plays out or do we work a trade?
  17. Defensive catcher that can't hit. Is Drew still available?
  18. The fact of the matter is that this was "a player to be named later". You don't normally get a difference maker in this type of trade. there is a chance of striking lightening in a bottle. will Johnson provide that, probably not, but I wouldn't be upset if he gave us one season like Diamond gave us in 2012. After the dust settled from the Morneau trade. We had Welker. The two sides continued to talk and TR (and probably his scouts) decided he would rather have Johnson. The Pirates decided they would rather have Welker back. This wasn't a major signing, just an attempt to alter a deal that was already complete.
  19. Thanks for the scouting report Thrylos. It's good to hear from someone that has actually seen him pitch, as apposed to trying to make a judgment based on numbers.
  20. Nice writeup on Justin Morneau on MLBTraderumors MLB Rumors - MLBTradeRumors.com From the article Market Morneau and his agent, Mark Pieper of SFX, approached the Twins about a potential contract extension this summer but were rebuffed at the time. Minnesota has no clear replacement waiting in the wings, with Chris Parmelee and Chris Colabello both posting sub-par big league numbers. The team may want to leave first base open for a potential position change for Joe Mauer, but a reunion between the two sides does make some sense. Morneau may be better suited to play for a team in a hitter-friendly ballpark (Target Field certainly does not qualify, especially for left-handed batters). The Blue Jays have long been rumored to have interest, but there doesn't necessarily appear to be a fit with Lind and Edwin Encarnacion set to handle DH and first base. Morneau could follow the path that Loney and many others have taken and seek to rebuild his value with the Rays, who would have no shortage of platoon options available. He could also be a first base option for the Red Sox, Brewers, Rockies or Rangers. Pirates GM Neal Huntington could also look to retain Morneau at a reduced rate.
  21. Jack, thanks for taking the time to answer our questions. How much baseball do you watch in a season? Do you see every game in some form or another? I could see a real addiction to waiting for the data to roll in from the previous days games and then by the time 7:10pm rolls around, you have already spent a full day pouring over the analysis. How does you typical day unfold during the season?
  22. thanks for the scouting report. I haven't seen any of these guys in person yet. Keep your opinions coming.
  23. Arica picked up a double in last years game coming out of A+, Hicks struck out in his first at bat this year. Talent is talent. There is usually a reason someone is still at the lower levels but this does give them a chance to raise their game. Similar to a Soph playing varsity baseball, some guys can play at a level with older and more polished players, others can't. Roberts thrived in the AFL last year, when for the most part he was playing agasint MLB ready competition.
  24. Not trying to hijack the thread, but Buxton is now in the futures game on ESPN 2, if you get bored with the Twins pounding the Yanks.
  25. There are all kinds of arguments to support of getting rid of the DH and going back to the NL rule book, but it only takes one look at both pitchers leading off an inning and those have no validity. It's like changing the rule book to include only two outs every third inning.
