  1. When the Aaron Hicks decision was made, people pointed out the danger in how Hicks could be another Carlos Gomez (who had finally in 2012 put together his first decent season with a .768 OPS). The response was quite similar to this. I don't think it's wise to simply ignore history in player development simply because a guy was rated a bit higher as a prospect (lest you forget, both Gomez and Hicks were top 100 prospects at some point). The Twins need to do what is best for Buxton in the long term, and I might add what is best for them in the long term. If that means that Buxton should be in MLB, I'm perfectly fine with it. If it means he needs more seasoning in AAA, I'm fine with that too. I personally lean towards the latter simply because he wasn't very good last year as it was clear he needed more time. If that means spending time in AAA working on hitting AAA curve balls, which are better than AA curve balls but not quite as good as MLB curve balls, fine. It will make him better at hitting a breaking pitch. But please, let us not underestimate just how steep that learning curve can be simply b/c you have a kid that was higher rated on all the experts ranking lists. There's no harm in having a 22 year old kid spend some additional time in the minors so that he's more ready when he hits the majors.
  2. I'd flip Garver and Turner. Garver isn't a bad defender either and his bat is much more likely to stick at the major league level. Turner is likely more a Drew Butera type guy with great defense, but that's it.
  3. 100% with you here too. I'd note that in 2014 his BB numbers dropped significantly in AAA. If yoga helped, great, but I think he was already figuring things out. I really wish someone would give TR an offer he couldn't refuse for Milone.
  4. I choose to not like it. It's the wrong call. May could have a Wagner Ceiling as a reliever. While that's awesome, I think he could be a very good starter too, and 200 innings of good to excellent pitching is better than 70 innings of elite pitching.... so I don't like it. The team would be better served trading Milone and his 3 remaining arb years, signing an elite reliever on a 3 or 4 year deal, and letting May start. Cost wise, it's not that much more expensive. It isn't even that much more risky.
  5. I like this signing. Can he play a passable CF?
  6. These are all good minor league depth signings, albeit with some major league upside.
  7. This. and given how the progression has been, I think it's pretty safe to say that some of these guys will at least make the show. It's looking promising. Given that RP seems to be the new money ball, perhaps the Twins were on top of this a bit earlier than we thought? Side note, I don't think this is a trust issue. Most of these guys are still in the lower minors. There's some AA success here. That's a far cry from 'we dont' trust you'.
  8. Seems I always hear complaints around here about how the Twins never do anything and wait until everyone else moves. We make 3 moves in the first week of the offseason and now it's a different set of second guessing. I really don't know what it will take to appease some. I'm not 100% sold on the Hicks/Murphy trade but it was probably the best bang for the buck and solves a problem for a fairly long time.
  9. Is this Ish or Ick? I forget.
  10. Nolasco to AAA isn't an option. He can refuse the assignment.
  11. Side note, that OF defense looks bad. I'd definitely go sign a stop gap CF if I could.
  12. Like it or not, Gibson will be starting next year. I'm fine dumping Milone and Nolasco. Milone I think could fetch something of use... Nolasco, not so much.
  13. Ryan made 3 moves a couple weeks back, so I don't get the consternation over inactivity. That said, I don't quite get the "find a 1 year bridge" idea either. A guy like Sipp or O'day for example will likely be effective for more than one year, and if we hit it big with Chargois, Meyer, Burdi, and Reed, you can still move one of those guys further back in the pen, which makes for one heck of a pen. But the reality is that some of those kids will probably struggle, so having someone around for a bit more than a year makes sense. I'm not against picking up a Storen, but with Jepsen gone next year, I'd much rather have someone effective who will stick around for a couple more seasons.
  14. people put way too much stock into career numbers on guys who have barely had careers. Your statement here is why I don't get the dislike that so many people have had about this trade (not you specifically Brock). Murphy was an above average catcher in the minors while being young for his age every step of the way. He may not have Hicks upside, but he's a lot closer to reaching his upside and that upside is an above average major league catcher. I am on the fence about this trade, but I don't get the consternation here. He's likely going to be catching for the Twins in some capacity for 5 years providing at worse a league average offense with above average defense on a team that desparately needed an upgrade here.
  15. My problem with May in the pen is that there's potential dominance as a starting pitcher that's being ignored. I agree that 60 innings of dominance is better than 200 innings of meh. I don't think May's ceiling is anywhere close to 200 IP of Meh. He was pitching well abover average as a starter prior to his demotion (including leading the rotation in WAR). I don't think his ceiling should be so quickly discounted based on 25 major league starts.
  16. even though the cost of relievers is rising, it isn't like these guys are getting 20M deals either. Even the best ones are struggling to hit 10M, something the Twins can afford. I don't have a problem signing a guy like Sipp or O'Day. I'm also quite fine trading Plouffe and/or Milone for a good one as well.
  17. I wouldn't touch Shields with a 10 foot pole right now. He really was bad last year, and that was in a pitchers park. Not that Nolasco was good, but adding more years and money along with the risk that says that last year's Shields is the new normal for Nolasco makes no sense at all.
  18. I know Sano is quite fast, but in a way that worries me. People who are that fast and that big don't stop easily, and when they collide with their tall, skinny counterpart in CF, there's a real chance of a nasty injury. Sano is built like a football player. Buxton is not. While I understand that the plan in Sano in RF, I do hope that Terry has other things in mind.
  19. I think you have it mixed up. A qualifying offer is something a player can decline as they are free agents otherwise. Fein still has control left on his contract. Once he completed his 3 years of serfdom (for lack of a better word), the Twins have the option to tender him a contract or let him become a free agent. If the Twins tender him (which they did) the only option Fein has is to either accept the tender as offered or go to arbitration and have a neutral arbitrator decide whose number is more accurate. I suppose Fein could reject it, but it would mean he's staying home and not playing anywhere (and the Twins would still retain control due to his service time).
  20. I'm still trying to figure out why Dean was added personally. He would be on my list of guys to trade (not that he'd get much). That said, I hope TR has three goals in winter meetings: 1) Trade Milone 2) Trade Ploufe 3) Pick up a stop gap CF.
  21. I don't think non-tendering Milone is settling on a 5 man rotation. Even without Milone in house, you have Hughes, Santana, Gibson, May (options), Duffey (options), and Nolasco (like it or not, he's in this picture). As well, you have Berrios in Rochester who is basically major league ready. On the 40 man, you have a major league ready (with much lower upside) guy in Rogers as well as a wildcard in Meyer. I don't think the team's depth is hurt by trading Milone. I'd most certainly do it. I do agree that if there's no deal in place, he'd be non-tendered. He doesn't have options, so you cannot stash him in Rochester. I would think though that someone would trade something for him. Milone is a reliable 5th starter who isn't terribly expensive. That has value, maybe not a ton, but given what some teams have trotted out there every 5th day, someone will take him off our hands, for likely a better return than Sam Fuld.
  22. I'd say no on Santana. He's not the same guy he was, and I don't see him having a renisance in the pen. I like the idea of Sipp. I'd be happy to DFA some of our pitchers for a guy like that. I'm also not against giving guys like Darnell or Rogers a chance there.
  23. Milone for Storen... OK, throwing that out as a bit of a joke, but given how tough it is to find decent pitchers, Milone will have some value. It could be in the form of a lottery ticket prospect (I'd think you can do better than a Palka or perhaps get a couple of those) or perhaps a good reliever like Jepsen. There's plenty of options out there. I certainly wouldn't just nontender him.
  24. He's still going to be in leveraged situations. I don't want him being the primary guy. The pen needs some lights out guys like say Storen or O'Day (or both). Fein can still be a very good contributing member in that scenario, but tendering him and expecting him to be that 8th inning guy will be a mistake.
  25. I don't have a problem with Fein on the roster for 2016. I have a problem with Fein being the 7th or 8th inning guy in 2016 for any situation other than a couple of injuries that forced the situation. Escobar would be an interesting one to consider locking up if the Twins think he can be the starter. I suspect though that Eduardo and company would likely want to bet on themselves in this scenario too as the arb values for a starting SS will be much higher than that of a utility guy. I wouldn't be against approaching him about a long term deal, but I suspect he likely would want to wait a year too. I'd probably offer arb to everyone on the list to be honest (though I'd trade Milone for sure and most likely Plouffe as well). Everyone there has value if used in their proper roles. Even Nunez as an occasionl spot starter/PH bat could be quite valuable. I just don't want the Twins to be counting on guys like Fein or Nunez for key roles.
