  1. Generally teams with better pitching are more consistent, and play games closer to the vest. Teams built on offense are more streaky. And they didn't invent the phrase "good pitching beats good hitting" for no reason. Over the long haul I always go with pitching and defense. When the Twims are hitting like the last few games they will punish teams. But they continue you their recent history of being an all or nothing offense. When they get rolling everyone hits, but when it's a bleak day they really do not seem to have someone to pick them up. I know some of that is just basebal, but they seem to have perfected it.
  2. There have been a lot worse ideas posted on TD than this one. I know, I posted some of them. . This idea sort of solves a few issues all at once. I have never believed EE to be able to play SS in MLB full time. He just doesn't have the range. And normally I wouldn't think he has the power for a prototypical 3B. But right now he is far more dangerous than Sano, with more defense. And a switch hitter. Despite the bigger offensive names the Twins have on their roster, he is still likely the one I would want up in a clutch situation. At least he won't try and hit a 3 run HR with someone on second. In the past I always thought the more his bat was exposed, the less he hit. But he seems to have worked past that.
  3. Some guys just float through their careers on talent. Hrbek was one, by his own admission. He told my Carrier guy at a company function that he never worked at the game, just played, and likely could have been better, but just enjoyed the game in his own fashion. There is nothing actually wrong with that, but leaves a few "what ifs"? When Herbie was in the prime of his career I was listening to a national sports talk show, and they were discussing which MLB player did not play up to the peak his abilities. Herbie was on the top of the list. That said he has had a good life, just as is. As for Sano? I would DH him, mostly to cut down on the chances of injury. I doubt his "health" will improve this summer, and then make a decision over the winter based on how he approaches his "health" issue. Maybe you can play MLB baseball in an "unhealthy" condition but the odds are poor.
  4. Things change. 6 weeks ago Berrios was the staff ace. Now he is a #3 and someone who has pitched 11 innings is the staff ace. Things change.
  5. This! This! This! A point on the shift. It's diminished the value and entertainment of watching an elite SS. And a good catcher throwing to second was always fun to watch. I am sure there are fans who like this new brand of ball? Maybe it's generational, maybe the young fans do? But I don't. I don't really mind the RP, and the strategy of their use. And I can also see the effort to combat the shift with long fly balls. But I agree totally with you on the matter of whether this is good for the fan or not. And for this fan it's not.
  6. The thought has suddenly occurred to me. What if the Twins have finally discovered their competitive level.
  7. Are you at the game? Was that wishful thinking? Are you a meteorologist? Did you bring an umbrella? . Taken alone none of these questions has relevance. But in total they go a long way to determing the accuracy of your forecast.
  8. By that time the 5th inning will be over and the Twins will have the game safely in hand. Let it rain, let it rain let it rain!
  9. >>>>>>>>>>>Since he was signed under the previous regime, the current front office shouldn’t feel an allegiance to the rest of the money owed to Hughes.<<<<<<<<<< I doubt it's the FO that feels any allegiance to the money left on Hughes contract. But I would imagine Jim Pohlad might!
  10. There are very few Minnesotans who believe that one of our major sports teams (Lynx excluded) will win anything more significant than a Participation Trophy. Those that do also likely still believe in Santa, The Easter Bunny, and Happy Endings. While these people are rare and pose no significant risk to the community in general, they are still being monitored closely by local authorities.
  11. I remember the good old days! The days when we (I) thought that Sano, Buxton, Rosario, and Kepler would lead us out of the wilderness. When Berrios, Burdi, and Chargois would put the fear of the fast ball unto our opponents. Lordy, maybe even a catcher who could both hit and catch at the same time? Alas, out of all the aforementioned names, Kepler is currently the only one on the field, and productive. Both at the same time. Those days seem so, so far in the past.
  12. You think lollygagging after a flyball, not blocking pitches, getting caught off base on third on a fly ball with no outs, not picking up a bunt and tagging home, etc, etc etc, is being prepared? Baseball is the only game around where you have the time to imagine scenarios ahead of them happening, if you want to do the thinking. Stat prep and info have nothing to do with keeping your eye on the ball, or any of the above named deficiencies. A lack of focus does however. You can call it whatever you want, effort, focus, preparedness, interest, or motivation, but whatever you call it, it's missing right now.
  13. I never miss your recaps, they are much appreciated. And it has to be hard to write them after two weeks of this kind of baseball. And since you were in positive mode today, I will pick up the seemingly negative slack. But I don't consider it negative, more pragmatic. Does Molitor have any idea how many hits RG and Garver have to get to make up for their lack of defense. Grossmans has been brutal for so long we will leave that dead horse unbeaten today. But Garver has been horrific. His fundamentals are just plain lousy. Not only did he give up those two runs, but with the he bases loaded he one handed a short hop pitch just to his right hip area, never got down to block it at all. He caught it, but it wasn't due to any overt effort. You just cannot catch in MLB that way. He does seem to be able to throw. But watching him catch is almost painful.
  14. Nice article. I did notice though that Molitor seems to get a pass? It's not that I would fire him now, but I wouldn't have extended him either. Currently this team seems to have no interest in playing baseball, properly. Examples from just last nights game: Rosario drops a fly ball. Mauer chases a ground ball far far to his right. Garver doesn't pick up a fair ball for an easy force/tag. Kepler gets hung out in no mans land on a ball to RF. Eddie Escobar misses a foul pop. Garver backhands a short hop pitch with the bases loaded. No block attempt. But does catch it. Dozier makes a sloppy tag. Garver passes a ball for a run. Dozier kicks a GB. A catchable ball sails over Grossman's head. And the night before wasn't any better. The injuries have hurt, no doubt. Santana's is likely the most significant, but we knew about that all winter and tried to address it. And frankly while he is our #1, he is basically a #3 on a contender. Sano, in his current state is not missed. He should be, but not the way he has played so far this spring. Polancos bat is definitely missed, as is Buxtons overall presence. But none of this explains the dismal efforts put forth on the field lately. There is a lot made in metrics about not giving away outs on offense. But giving them away on defense is just as bad. And we are giving them back to other teams far too easily.
  15. And foul or not that play on the line was uber stupid!
  16. Ok just the last inning he one handed a short pitch with the bases loaded, and I was gonna say something. But good grief he is not good with a glove
  17. Cuz he told Molitor that's where he wants to hit!
  18. I still think Garver is going to have to hit awfully well to cover up his defense.....
  19. The question is can the Striped Rodents handle the Upper Colonies?
  20. If your puddin dispenser becomes successful, I will simply copy it!
  21. I think Pohlad's love of Molitor had more to do with it than the players.
  22. The problem with thinking 2017 is repeatable is that you would have to hope that the Twins end up with the same cupcake schedule they did in the last half of 2017. That's not a certainty. The White Sox and their young roster may improve more than we think. History does repeat itself, but remember 2016 is also history. Chief is pretty spot on with my thoughts on the roster. While Molitor is hamstrung by some FO decisions, he is the one exposing EE, sitting Mauer, and hitting Kepler in the bottom of the order. A lot falls back on him. Lastly, LaMarre ain't no prize, but you cannot have RG wandering aimlessly around in RF with that arm, or lack thereof. It takes a LOT of walks to make up for that level of defense.
