  1. Wednesday nights game in KC seemed to have a relatively generous strike zone, or as Dick pointed out, "larger on the outside" cuz he's just guessing! Last night much smaller. The very first Malone pitch a perfect knee high strike, ball one! In about the 3rd inning I told my wife, Malone cannot pitch to that strike zone and not get whacked around. (My wife yawned) Back to the topic, and the game dragged. Working the count might currently be sound baseball strategy, but if continued could be more hazardous to the game than Disco Dan Ford. Without TIVO I might have to resort to watching Americas Most Wanted! (Or soccer)
  2. Things I thought I would never see.... Hitter if the day: Pedro Florimon
  3. Totally agree, and would add this. Is it possible that like many others TR missed the job, thought it would be different if he went back, and found out it isn't? If you remove his blind loyalty to Gardy, I would keep him. He understands patience in building an orginisation. And if you want long term success that is a necessity. But patience only goes so far, and Gardy has worn his out. He looks beat down by the losing, the team plays poor fundamentals, and frankly if the players love him so dearly, they should quit missing cutoff men, running into stupid outs, and all the other mistakes that are now a daily occurrence!
  4. So if Farris is hitting ok, and playing "very good defense", why do we go out and get a Shaefer? I am not pretending to be an expert on eithers abilities, especially Farris, just more or less curious on the rationale, or lack thereof. Maybe if we brought Farris up to play center we could let Santanna get in some time at SS, ROFL! I hope the whole Santanna thing is not another of Gardy's saying one thing, and doing another. He has some what of a history of that.
  5. "We've got to get him" to play in lends itself to the dugout staff..... IMHO ...... Gardy has had odd tiffs like this before.... If I remember right he was very perturbed by Hicks flipping the ball to an infielder after a catch? Does anyone else remember that? If I remember correctly Hicksie erred under that catch all clause " respect for the game". I have come to believe that violating that philosophy to be a far more egregious than missing a cutoff man, running into an out at third, or any of the other numerous mistakes made this year.
  6. I saw the play, several times... It looks like it fell under the heading of "bleep happens"! And why play in with the guy at second... He just cuts down his range, and obviously will not hold the runner! So the question is, who was Gardy throwing under the bus? Dozy has always seemed a Gardy guy, so he is likely not the target. And there have been rumblings about a lack of love between Molitor and Gardy, even to the extent that one of the conditions of Gardy's re-up was that Molitor be on the staff? Final thought..... With the exception of Mauer and Dozier the Twins defense is very ordinary. You can add Suzuki's ability to block balls in the dirt, but his throwing is at best very average. If you are going to pitch to contact, you better have someone catching all that contact.
  7. The only thing I would "buy" is a very good SP! Adding a Hunter for two years to play LF does not make this a better team long term. And history shows that once signed, especially if Gardy remains, means he is here for two years! Good or bad. See Willingham. If you truly want the fastest progression then you have to throw the new guys out there, and move forth. It is not going to be instant success, but dribbling them in one at a time just drags out the process. Plus it will be entertaining. Please do not get stuck in the middle adding worn out old veterans, taking up playing time. We just got done doing that!
  8. I agree with the excitement part of this comment... And with the regression part.... But might I add, that the Twins historically do not make any changes until a third of the year is gone. Ergo, Buxton, Sano, Berrios et al might get here when we are 8 out already. It seems the list of SP is about 8 deep, pick any 5 you like. None at this time are deemed expert at missing bats. Something has to be done to improve the defense on the left side. And since Santanna is really never going to be the future CF, it borders on criminal the he is killing time out there. Put Parm in left, Shaefer in center, Santanna at SS, for the balance of the year. You get to evaluate Parm and Santanna at once. After those assessments are made you can then decide what you need. But right now as the lineup reads, you need a SS with range, a center fielder who is actually an outfielder, an a LF who can catch some of the many batted balls the aforementioned SP staff is assured of supplying.
  9. I don't have a problem with the names as much as the philosophy. I read somewhere, and it seems to be, that TR has nixed the 3 headed catcher? If that is true, it is not good for either Pinto, or Hermann, depending on the ability of Vargas to hold the DH spot. And while Escobar is "stable" at short, he is not the shortstop you will find on a low strikeout, but hopefully winning team. I admit he has hit far better, for far longer than I expected. But for all the talk of the lack of outfield coverage hurting the pitchers, the left side of the infield with him and Plouffe leaves a lot of ground balls to be returned to the infield by the left fielder!
  10. Currently I agree, short of moving Mauer over there (heaven forbid) there is no one currently to replace him. But I would put him in left a few times, Eddy E to third, and Santanna at SS. This lets you see what you have or don't have. Remember, if you think we have a lot of first baseman now, what happens of Sano cannot handle third, or his arm does not recover enough to make those throws?
  11. The key to the series, and remainder of the season, is whether the Twins use the remaining games to evaluate talent rather than pad the win total. If they use this time to do that, and lose 100 games (unlikely), is better than going all out and still losing 90. If they don't, that means they are managing for their jobs, and next years season ticket sales. That is not the way to build for the future. And to preempt the argument that you owe it to the league standings to put your most competitive team out there, all you should need to do is use the same philosophy in all the remaining games, a level playing ground so to speak.
  12. I agree, Arcia is better than advertised, there is definitely an upside there. He will never be Tori Hunter, because he will be a better hitter, and poorer fielder. BUT, he has a strong accurate arm, he plays hard, and he already goes fairly decent to his left. His most glaring weakness is going back to his right in the gap. Some of that will get better, and some of that Buxton will cure. Nothing is ever a sure thing, but trading Arcia, as some advocate would end up being an organizational mistake of epic proportions!
  13. Since the question was what would "you" do with Pinto, this could be considered a moot point...... But since TR has more or less nixed 3 catchers, and RG won't DH a catcher, the part time catcher and DH idea are not gonna happen. They should but won't. And if Twins pitchers love to pitch to Kurt, they should show that love by staying out there with him past the 5th inning! Or does sitting next to him in the dugout count? Lastly, will Perkins opinion of Josmil define his entire career? That's a lot of blame for someone who did not block a slider in the dirt!
  14. Simple answer, I would catch him 70\30, with Suzuki as the back up. DH then depending on situations. But that won't happen. Neither will full time DH. I am afraid you cannot use the words Pinto and Gardy in the same sentence, or same dugout. If Gardy is still here, Pinto cannot DH without us returning to the days of 3 catchers. What if your starting catcher gets hurt, and you lose your DH for maybe 3 innings in a 162 game season. And with the continual [need] for 13 pitchers, that leaves one with another season of the short bench syndrome! More Hermann? I have not heard of Pinto playing OF in Rochester? So the Arcia\Pinto duo is out, plus Arcia is just too young to platoon. If you platooned every lefty who did not hit left handed pitching, you would need 30 man rosters. (Btw Ruesse had an interesting bit on that Sunday). I like Pinto, and would have never resigned Suzuki. He is a nice catcher, and tough. But he is not the future. Same as Escobar at short. The Twins have half frittered away chances to evaluate, and give experience. To avoid 90 losses? I know this comment has wandered seemingly off topic, but not really. It goes to the core of the stuck in the middle of the road philosophy that has cost the Twins at least a year of major league development time.
  15. Sometimes it seems like the appreciation of Dozier's defense, (and his perfect coiffure) and general all around game causes us to forget that he is stuck in the .230's. This equates 1\3 of a hit more per ten AB's than a certain shortstop now residing in Rochester. (Yes I saw the 20 HR's). My point being that if he is hitting above the 6 hole that means the rebuild project has not achieved critical mass yet. While this reply seems repetitive to another one I did, the subject keeps raising it's perfect hairdo!
  16. I have sometimes struggled to figure out how to describe the Twins the last 3 plus years! Needless to say they have a lack of talent, but something else seems to define them. For lack of a better term, "soft" comes to mind. And this precedes the years that are the subject of this thread. How do you get the Twins hitters out? Walk the first two guys, and they will do it for you! Ok, that might have been an overstatement but clutch has not been a word in their vocabulary for several years. Nor has "attitude". Not the kind that will rightfully get you plunked in the ribs in the next at bat, but the AJ kind. As for us the fans... It isn't the fact we have mediocre talent on the team.... Every team does. It's the fact that we are content to celebrate .238 hitters for "keepin after it".
  17. I went and looked up what a Mobious Strip was? It gave me a headache!
  18. Dozier must have been reading TD, he just singled. His second hit in his last 28 AB's. (Per Bert). I doubt you can have a .280, 20 HR version of Dozier. He does not have the natural power to do both. He can up his average by spreading the ball around, but there goes the HR's. Or he can keep jerking everything, and if they keep throwing him stuff up and in, he can get his 20. In either scenario, if he is hitting above the 6 hole it's an indication that your teams offense is not going to be anything to get to excited about. The caveat is #2 but he really doesn't fit that slot well. He would have to reinvent himself as the .280 Dozier. The good news: he is a very solid second baseman, makes all the plays and more, and doesn't seem to take a play off. And should easily be in consideration for best hair in the AL.
  19. Pinto's lot was cast before the ink dried on Suzuki's contract. He is a Gardy type guy. There was never truly a competition to be the starter. The good Lord himself could not catch Deduno and look good doing it. So, if you have a catcher who you consider poorer defensively, is that the guy he gets to catch? One of the reasons we kept Suzuki was to work with the plethora of young pitchers on the way, like May! Well so far we don't know how that is going to work, do we. One could easily say Suzuki is the catcher of the present. But the problem for the Twins is there is no present, only a future. And all decisions should be based on that premise. I think the fans would buy into that completely. I would rather lose 100 than 90 with the future players losing them. In reality spring training started for this team after the first 10 games post ASG! Btw, I see no way Pinto gets to to equally share catching duties equally with Suzuki, sans injury. It's really not the way Gardy rolls!
