  1. Baseball prospectus ranked him 8th.
  2. Also on bp today, a great article about the Twins rebuilding efforts this season. Calls rebuilding a bad word. http://www.baseballprospectus.com/article.php?articleid=19703
  3. I've got to say Buxton at 8 and is pretty darn high. I would say too high and I am a huge Twins Prospect guy. I like that we got six in the top 101. Wonder where he had Rosario?
  4. To give twinsdaily.com members something to talk about
  5. A little off topic, but what is the Twins International cap for this year? Everyone had the same cap this year but I have read multiple times that this year and in future years the cap will be inversly related to teams records. That would obviously put the Twins at having the 4th highest cap on international signing. The penalties will be stiff for teams that go over that cap (the Rangers are an example as they were WAY over the cap).
  6. The point isn't that the money is not available from owners. The point is that it handcuffs the rest of your draft. Not only does it handcuff you, it sounds like it could be impossible to sign Appel. The Pirates shifted as much money around as they could and still could not pay the bonus demands without losing next years pick. I think most owners would ok with giving him his above slot bonus, but GM's would have to draft a bunch of college seniors with no upside to be able to sign him. Now the question will soon become, do you punt on the rest of your draft to sign this guy... If you think Appel is a sure fire top of the rotation guy, maybe you do. How often do you actually get multiple major leaguers out of a draft? I think TR (or whomever signs off on draft day) would have to consider coming away from the draft with one top 25 prospect in all of the minors and no other players.
  7. There farm system has been depleted by two HUGE trades this offseason. They have a stud pitcher but he has been off the table. I'm not too familar with their farm system as of late (see sentence one), but I'm pretty sure Twinsdaily posters would not be too excited about the return we would get.
  8. A-Rod is prime example (apparantly he forgot to bring the juice to the playoffs) of a player who is great/MVP caliber player and can't do it in the playoffs. Delmon Young on the otherhand, played great two straight playoffs, while Miguel Cabrera played very average in playoffs. Does anyone want to argue that Delmonte is a better player than two sure fire hall of famers...no. You win in the playoffs by being hot and yes (when Delmon fricken' Young gets you into the world series) a lot of luck. According to my sources, Thyroidlos98 thinks TR and Gardy should have sold their souls to Satan so that they could have made a world series during the 00's, my brother.
  9. Uh-oh, hope he gets some different "reliable sources" for those stats.
  10. When is the sequal to the movie coming out?? Are there still camera's following him around minor league ball?
  11. Is SlaMa up for this open bullpen spot? I heard he is good?
  12. Best player on my Midget Baseball team in western ND (ages 9-12ish)...wasn't the same after tommy john surgery. Once had a kid from Center, ND (doubtful anyone will know where that is) hit a homerun off of one of my buddies, we were 11. It was a legion baseball field. I wonder what that kid is doing now. True story though the kid hit a homerun when wind wasn't a factor. This was before Danny Almonte so we didn't ask for a birth certificate, but the kid could mash. Oh ya, and I know everything about baseball, my brother.
  13. Arcia is the kind of prospect that doesn't rank high, but the kind that you KNOW will make it. He may not be a perrenial all-star, but he is going to give you a great bat. I would take a system full of Arcia's rather than a system full of "lofty, toolsy" guys who haven't put the tools together. Sometimes those guys win you the lottery, but sometimes those guys end up being punch lines. Arcia is going to hit close to .300 with 20+ homers. He is going to have a pretty good arm and is going to be below average fielder. Sounds like a pretty legit player to me. For some reason, an entity like BaseballAmerica and Keith Law enjoy higher ceiling guys than sure thing guys. If you look at baseballamerica's list, the top is full of guys who were drafted last year (Buxton, Gausman, etc.). Towards the bottom of the top 100 you see much safer picks with guys who are close to the bigs and some who have even seen some time. If I were to do a list, I would lean more towards the Major League ready guys and less towards the projection type guys in low A.
  14. Finally, the front office has really been trying and they really care lately with all of these minor league signings.
  15. Not with the add-ins. Straight up maybe, but I would still lean no.
  16. But you have to remember teams like the Yankees, Red Sox, and other big spenders could take a guy who other teams wouldn't touch because of bonus demands. Those teams would take a guy who had previously stated he would need X amount of money to keep him from going to college. The Twins, in the past, could not afford to do that. Also the Yankees and Red Sox had unlimited amounts of money to spend on Free Agents and Latin American kids. If the Yankees and Red Sox had to do things the way the Twins did during most of the 2000's, they would be in the same boat. Heck, the Red Sox are in the same boat with their unlimited money. So, my brother, do not say that "the good teams" can draft good players and develop them late in round one because it is not as cut and dry as you seem to make it. The new system which limits money spent on the draft and and on International signings will eventually sway things in favor of the Twins who develop young talent and do not spend lavishly on free agents. I would say the Twins picked the perfect time to have a few down years...don't you think Mike?
  17. Like with AJP? Seems to me that window was wide open. Teams knew that AJ was available because Mauer was the future behind the plate, yet TR still seemed to get one of the most lopsided trades in recent ML history. TR made that trade, while Billie traded Garza for Delmon and Hardy for some minor league reliever (is it Hoey? I seriously cannot remember that is how bad that trade was).
  18. Two horrible trades you are right. Didn't he also sign some guy from Japan? How did that work out? I don't get the Smith love. Lets give him credit when Sano gets to the majors and is a star. I do hope he is a star, but it is a little too early to give a guy credit for signing a kid who has not even landed in AA yet and strikes out over a quarter of the time. I understand some wanting a change in management. After two bad seasons most teams would have fired the whole front office. The fact that we didn't makes me proud to be a Twins fan. P.S. Everyone is calling for TR and Gardy's head, but also hate the ownership. So if those guys get fired, who leads the charge and hires new personel? Who is to say that ownership won't mess it up even worse and we are stuck in a pattern of firing guys every two years until we get lucky enough to get a good GM...when TR is as well respected a GM in the league as any. Gardy would be a free agent for like 15 minutes before a team would throw a big salary deal at him...My brother
  19. Best link ever. Like hardknocks without the f bombs.
  20. I catch a hint of sarcasm...but I like it. Your method is less scientific than sabremetrics but probably just as effective. Plus you probably get laid more. Great blog!
  21. Great post. I think the bad luck because of injuries is the real deal. The Bill Smith era will take a few years to cleanup but a decade of playoff contention spoiled fans a bit. TR is rebuilding and it might take another year but it is coming. I personally think this team is better this year and will finish near .500. The middle of the order COULD be above average with a pitching staff much better than last years. Gardy will keep his job and I will make the bold prediction that a strong August and September will warrant an extension. Im what you would call an optimistic Twins fan:-)
  22. How is this an appropriate comment? I do not see how this moves the conversation along or does anything but make you look small. To move the converation along, more than frodaddy G ever does, I would like to talk more about this power surge. That month of June was sick. Then the injury came and he really was not even close to the same. I hope that this surge was the rule and not the exception. I am afraid that this may be a little bit of a mirage. His defense shoud indeed improve. The guy has played everywhere and even started out last year as a utility player mostly in the outfield.
  23. At least now they care and are trying.
  24. He had his surgery earlier in the year than Gibson if im not mistaken so hopefully he gets a few more innings and gets a spot in the arizona fall league.
  25. Because either the twins dont care or arent trying anymore. Duh
