  1. SI posted a link to this earlier: Y! SPORTS But the Reds ballboy got a baseball card made.
  2. Yeah, we aren't talking about the AFL enough. Wittgren is a nice late pick on your part but I'm not going to kill the Twins for not taking a college reliever. For all I know, he could be the next Anthony Slama. After the first few rounds, the draft is pretty tough to predict.
  3. I think the move from the Dome to TF had more effect on his power than a position change would have.
  4. Thanks for posting that Seth. He's a big dude. I went to ST last year and couldn't believe how tall all those pitchers they had down there. If nothing else, they'll win a lot of pick-up BB games. It sure was nice seeing him hit 97-98 so (seemingly) effortlessly. His slider worked pretty well off of that.
  5. I think every single one of them were multi-sport athletes, at least in high school as Mauer was. Perhaps the exception might be the international guys - Kepler, Sano - who signed at 16 to just concentrate on baseball. I think we remember Mauer's HS stuff a bit more b/c he, like Stewart and Bundy and Bradley, was a top flight QB who could have gone to a football power.
  6. Well, that's an answer I guess. By that logic, I would assume you also think poorly of Hoyer's job the last two years in Chicago, as those Cubs have actually managed to lose more games than the Twins despite higher payroll, more FA signings and (apparently) more use of advanced stats.
  7. Yeah, basically what James said. I think the Twins have pretty much spent all their money - a few years ago they signed Thorpe for 500k so it doesn't always mean they need to spend 1m+ for a good player. They're all sorta lottery tickets. I do think the Twins should spend a lot of Pohlad's money on the Cuban and Japanese players that they can but I don't know a thing about any of them to say whether or not the Twins missed on someone or not.
  8. Sano will be at AAA. I think Rosario too since the Twins have kept him and Sano close together for the last several years. I'm hoping Meyer starts the year in the majors but he'll probably start at AAA. Buxton starts at AA. I think it's possible that the Twins keep both Sano and Rosario at AA b/c they've been willing to promote without going to AAA so it won't mean much if they aren't there but I think that's where they'll go.
  9. Yes, it's better for the Twins to have Mauer get as many AB as a catcher because he is one of the 10 best catchers of all time, his bat is incredible for a catcher (For his career, his OPS+ (not adjusted for position) is better than Adrian Gonzalez, Teixeira, Hamilton, HanRam etc). Moving him for Pinto is not a good idea. If Mauer isn't healthy enough to play catcher, obviously that changes things. Twins hopefully will have more options that Colabello at first.
  10. Do you think the Twins were in a situation where a quick fix was possible?
  11. Because it's true. His comments - Ryan mocks science and math, team suffers from groupthink - aren't necessarily true, just his opinion of Ryan. Saying "I'd do things differently" isn't the same as "I'd do things better." And saying "I'd do it differently" isn't a way to solve the problem when you don't know what the problem is. Even with the benefit of hindsight, no one has suggested a better way to do what Ryan has done, except abstract get rid of everyone posts. Ryan seems to have figured that the team lacks talent, put people in charge of minor league development that he trusts and has given them talent. He has a track record of successfully rebuilding this team and there's no reason to think that he needs to fire a bunch of scouts b/c the a draft 7 years ago sucked. I find it stunning that people can look at what he's done the last two years as GM and still be anti-Ryan. He's a very good GM.
  12. It makes sense but I think they'll have Mauer stay behind the plate and catch some more. (Twins won't spend 80m or more on McCann). His durability has been frustrating these last few years but it works best for the team if he can catch.
  13. Most of these are just how you'd do things differently, none that would improve the team. And Ryan did bring in Jack Goin to do stats. You also make the claim of spend money but don't say how, even with the benefit of hindsight. You seem stuck on some notion that the Twins can't develop talent despite a pretty successful history of doing that and currently having one of the top ranked farm systems. Why can't you accept the idea that it's just cyclical? That teams, esp low payroll teams as they were until 2010, don't always stay on top? Why does the normal ebb and flow have to mean that Ryan, who took over two years ago, is an old guy who doesn't understand the game? Since he's come back, has he been snookered in a trade? Has he been burned in a FA signing? Has he reorganized the organization? Have top prospects been rushed? Has the team drafted well? Has he brought in younger coaches and managers throughout the system? Has he made good small moves - waiver claims, minor league free agents, rule v picks? What he hasn't done is waste money on large FA signings that wouldn't have helped the team anyway.
  14. What hasn't changed? Did you expect a 99 loss team to become a winning team as soon as Ryan took over? What, even with hindsight, would you have done differently last year?
  15. Well, in the few years Ryan's been back, the farm system has become one of the best in the game and might still be #1 despite losing Gibson, Arcia and Hicks. So maybe we shouldn't get rid of those development guys.
  16. Interesting read, thank you. I see that his views on how to review his manager are pretty similar to what Joe Posnanski wrote the other day. Glad he's our GM.
  17. Nice to see. Hope he wins a few more MVPs down the line.
  18. Allow me to scream.
  19. I doubt it. Molitor wanted to be the manager when Ryan hired Gardy but other than that I don't think there's any bad blood between the two. As mentioned, he's been a pretty consistent presence at ST every year.
  20. I'm ambivalent. I don't really think coaching at the ML level matters that much but I do think the Twins need to bring in some Latino coaches. I get that a guy like Molitor - HOF player - can relate to guys in ways Vavra etc can't. And if Sano, Buxton etc have an appreciation of baseball history, they'll listen more to him. And he certainly knows a thing or two about baserunning and the "little things" that add up. But he hasn't really coached much and I'm not sure how much he can really help. I wish the Twins would pursue someone like Orlando Cabrera who definitely played baseball the "Twins way" who might be able to make the transition from the minors to the majors easier for guys like Sano, Arcia and Rosario.
  21. I don't remember Maddux ever hitting 93-94 unless it was the same way Radke could hit it. Fangraphs has Maddux's avg fb from 02-08 as sitting around 85mph (Radke was 88mph). Now this was the end of Maddux's career but it still covered multiple 200+ip 4+ WAR seasons.
  22. Does anyone remember how much the Twins were on Giolito before his arm fell off? I seem to remember rumors that the Twins loved him and were still kicking the tires on him before Buxton emerged as their guy.
  23. And it's the first time in how long?
  24. Ryan did plenty of those - Hunter, Mauer, Santana. Our problem right now is we don't have young talent like Craig to lock up.
  25. I like Haren a lot but I think he's done. Multiple years for him wouldn't be a good idea. I think the Twins will go after Hughes and I think he'd be a good fit for TF. Their are a bunch of interesting pitchers that might be gotten on one or two year deals - Baker, Santana, maybe Lincecum etc - and the Twins will probably add one of those guys too. Hughes Correa Gibson 1 yr deal guy And I hope Meyer gets the last spot
