  1. 13 strike outs tonight, no walks and one hit in a complete game. Jeepers.
  2. We just need a scenario where Aiken falls to us ...
  3. Yeah, I've read that the Twins didn't want him relying on his slider as much down there. He's also the youngest player in the league. Parks at baseball prospectus mentioned him in a chat the other day and still thinks he could be a true #1 type. I think this is probably a good case of "don't scout the stat line."
  4. Updating this again. May has had two more nice starts and for the season is now 5-3, 2.62 era, 55ip, 54 so, 22 bb. He hasn't given up an earned run in 26 innings. He's walking about 3.6 bb/9, although his last start he only walked 2 in 7 innings. His two previous he had walked 7 in 13 innings. I think he has to be the next Red Wing pitcher promoted. Not a lot left to do in AAA and he's about a finished product.
  5. I'd also add that, while Sano, Buxton and Rosario have been underwhelming this year, they've had nice seasons from Berrios, Polanco, May and Vargas so far. None of those 4 are top 100 prospects right now but could be nice complementary pieces in the majors.
  6. Seems to have better control this year, getting deeper into games. Also not on an innings limit.
  7. Well, it doesn't come all at once. They graduated three top 100 prospects off the lists last year. Pinto, who made some lists, will graduate this year. Meyer and May will come up. The injuries to Sano and Buxton (and Rosario's drug suspension) are real bummers but the team does seem to have a decent foundation being placed.
  8. Interesting article on WAR value per season in a rotation. The really interesting part was that, over the time of this study, less than 3 players per team even qualified (meaning reached 162 innings pitched) each season. But, for those that did, the break down, via WAR, of the spots in the rotation were basically 6/4/3/2/0. The two takeaways I got were 1) true aces are really rare (Twins were lucky to have a few) and 2) durability is really underrated. http://espn.go.com/blog/sweetspot/post/_/id/47883/defining-rotation-slots-in-terms-of-war Anyhow, since 2000 Radke, Mays, and Santana have meet that threshold at least once.
  9. Here is what the Twins faced in the playoffs 2010 - game 1 Sabathia (7.5 k/9 4.6 WAR season), Game 2 Pettitte (7.0 k/9 2.5 season), Game 3 Hughes (7.5 k/9 2.0 WAR season). Twins were able to score some runs off of Sabathia (Liriano was worse though) but Pettitte and Hughes shut down their offense. 2009 - game 1 Sabathia (7.7 k/9 6.2 WAR), game 2 AJ Burnett (8.5 K/9 4.4 WAR), game 3 Pettitte (6.8 k/9 3.3 WAR). Pavano and Blackburn pitched well for us but offense never showed up. 2006 - game 1 Zito (6.1 k/9 4.4 WAR), Estaban Loaiza (5.6 k/9 0.7 WAR), Dan Haren (7.1 k/9 3.5 WAR). Offense didn't really show up for us. 2004 - Game 1 Mike Mussina (7.2 K/9 2.4 WAR), game 2 Jon Leiber (5.2 k/9 2.8 WAR), Kevin Brown (5.7 k/9 2.8 WAR), Vasquez (6.8 k/9 2.5 WAR). Twins beat Mussina and lost two extra innings games. In any event, it helps to have good pitchers but that doesn't mean they have to have 8+ K/9 rates. The Twins just need better pitchers period. If that's Kolek, fine. If that's Nola, fine.
  10. Buxton still #1 despite his injury. http://insider.espn.go.com/mlb/story/_/id/10996551/minnesota-twins-outfielder-byron-buxton-no-1-top-25-prospect-ranking-mlb
  11. Newcomb? Interesting, I don't think we've heard much about him but he's a lefty with a pretty good fastball and did pretty well in the cape cod league last year.
  12. If he's there at #5, I can't see the Twins passing on him. I think Beede is the only pitcher that scares me more than Kolek but the Twins won't pass on him. But he won't be there either.
  13. I really like the depth of this draft but I'm not as high on the top end as I have been the last two years. If Stewart was in this draft, I'd be hoping and praying he somehow fell to 5 but I don't think he would. Aiken, to me, seems like the only really exciting guy. Kolek could be a one trick pony, Rodon could have been overused in college (like Phil Humber), Jackson would've gone somewhere in the 5-10 range last year, probably behind Meadows, Hoffman would've been great. Gordon doesn't excite me at all but he's probably legit. I think there are a number of pitchers (Nola, Freeland, Touki, Holmes) that are sorta like Bill Simmons Reuben sandwich comparison - you didn't order it you didn't think it was that good, your friend did, and now you want to stab him in the eye and take it.
  14. Yeah, Radke wasn't bad. Since 1972, among AL pitchers, Radke is 25th in fWAR.
  15. I get why the emotion thing bugs people but I also don't like confusing politeness for not caring. He's clearly a great player, probably going to the HOF and he certainly cares about baseball. Look at this play - hell of a play and no emotion from Mauer. I remember Yankee fans trolling twins cites saying how he'd be in NY in a year. http://m.mlb.com/video/v4608765/minnyy-mauer-gets-the-runner-at-home-in-the-ninth There have been a lot of quite great players - nothing wrong with that. I just wish Mauer was putting up Mauer numbers this year.
  16. Gibson had 7 starts in A+ before being moved up to AA, Garza had 8 and Slowey had 14. All three were promoted in the same year they debuted. Maybe a reliever debuted in AA but my guess is that the Twins, and most teams, give college guys a tune up in A+ first. Appel, Gray, Gausman, Zimmer - all recent college picks - all started at A+ or lower. (Some started in rookie ball).
  17. And this is the reason to hope that Kolek falls to us at #5. But if all he ends up with is fastball control, than maybe he's Aroldis Chapman. If he's there at #5, I hope we take him but he is a risky pick.
  18. I suspect Reusse brings more traffic to startribune.com than you think. As for "if you disagree with these I don't care" quip, I'd say that's a pretty common attitude among columnists. If you like the columnist, we call it "being snarky."
  19. I think Miami is the big wild card in that scenario - they need hitting badly in their system and Jackson has been linked to them. But Rodon/Aiken would be tough to pass on. I think both Chicago teams will take pitchers, no matter what, so I think Jackson could fall to #5 but I'm also not sure the Twins would take him if he did - they haven't been linked to him, he's a Boras guy and the Twins could still grab a guy like Nola in that scenario. I think they'd jump on any of the three pitchers if they were there.
  20. I have no problem with Reusse. Unlike other columnists out there, I've always had the sense that he genuinely loves baseball and wants the Twins to be good. He might be a bit old school - likes RBIs and Wins - but at least he cares. Not a big problem with his grades - Mauer has been horrible this year and I'm actually surprised on how little crap he's gotten for it from the press. His .079 ISO is ridiculously small. That's the 13th worst in MLB this year.
  21. Heyman is usually pretty well plugged in - esp w/Boras. And Correa isn't as likely to stick at short as some say. A left side infield of Correa and Gordon would be pretty good defensively and the Astros have a nice core of pitching prospects (Appel, McCullers, Folty to name three). Houston also has 3 picks in the top 42 means they should be trying to spread some of that money around for those other picks. And if that happens, then the draft lines up well for us.
  22. I think I'm actually more excited about our second pick than the first. From what I've read, it's pretty certain that the Twins will take Gordon if he's there. If not, it's Nola. Both are fine with me.
  23. Agreed.
  24. I don't think it hurts the Twins at all to have him as depth - it might be better for him to go to Korea or Japan or something but that's just him. Maybe the Twins (or Diamond) think he could still have a future as a longman/LOOGY Duensing type. Anyhow, I do think that Gilmartin is above him in the pecking order but with the Twins, it doesn't really matter if you're at AA/AAA.
