  1. This post, much like me, is much bette than it originally looks. (Or, at least that's what my wife tells me).
  2. Yep. If he sinks, he's Angel Morales. But if he swims, I think he could really shoot up the prospect rankings. If we could just somehow combine his power with Harrison's plate discipline ....
  3. http://www.startribune.com/sports/twins/blogs/297878831.html Hicks optioned to CF along with Rosario. Schafer and Robinson will hold down CF for now. May was also sent down to AAA and Milone is the 5th starter. Pelfrey to the bullpen. I was hoping Hicks would get some at-bats in AAA without as much pressure. So, hopefully it works out for him.
  4. Good topic. I hate the Red Sox the most and it's not particularly close. I hate all the attention ESPN gives them. Drives me nuts. Red Sox Yankees Cards After those three, I don't really hate anyone. I'm rooting against the Astros b/c of how the treated Aiken and I dislike the Cubs on principal. The Twins/A's used to be a darn good rivalry and I once hated them more than any team but not anymore.
  5. If he was putting up something like a .275/.312/.500 line and playing good RF defense at the ML, yes, he'd be a good player. The concern is that he will have an on-base well below that.
  6. Yeah, that's exactly what he said. -sigh-
  7. Pretty interesting write up at BP. Basically reaffirms that Ryan is doing what he's already done - build up through player development. "Can the Twins pull themselves back into contention by doing the one thing every other team tries to do, only better? Of course. Minnesota's farm system is currently rated no. 2 overall by our prospect gurus, and if Byron Buxton and Miguel Sano and Alex Meyer and Kohl Stewart and Jose Berrios and Nick Gordon and Nick Burdi turn out to be really, really good, the Twins will become a leviathan that no amount of shifting, analyzing, or inefficiency-leveraging by their opponents will be able to stop. If not, they'll pick themselves up, dust themselves off, and start all over again. It's the Minnesota way."
  8. Doesn't seem to negative but maybe more patient. I think this years team is similar to the 2001 team but the Grantland guy certainly thinks the team has the future foundation. I also don't think the other teams are quite as good. I get the concern over the Santana signing but I'm not sure the fan base would have been ok with not doing anything to upgrade the rotation after last year esp after the owner said money wasn't an issue. So, it is what it is. Ryan can always make trades down the road if need be.
  9. Yep, and Bundy and Hoffman. Probably a lot more.
  10. I think you're giving the Astros too much credit. They dropped their offer to 3.15m but then raised it to 5 and he still refused. Obviously the medicals are the big thing but every team that wants to draft him will get a look at them. The Twins got lucky when Gibson fell to them because of concerns he'd need TJ surgery and it worked out. Unless they are in love with another talent - and a lot of the draft still has to play out - nabbing him at 6 looks pretty good. Incidentally, the slot value for that pick is about 3.9m so not a huge loss to Aiken if he signs for slot.
  11. Well, with us not having a second round pick, I think it's less likely that they abandon BPA. But maybe it lets us get a bit better talent than normally you would get at #6.
  12. Yep. Here's Callis write up,he still thinks he goes high. "Ranked No. 3 on MLBPipeline.com's initial 2015 Draft Top 50 in December, Aiken still could go very early in the 2015 Draft. Jeff Hoffman had Tommy John surgery last May and signed for $3,080,000 as the No. 9 overall choice by the Blue Jays in June. The Nationals took Erick Fedde at No. 18 and paid him $2,511,100 despite knowing that his elbow needed to be reconstructed. In 2012, Washington spent the No. 16 selection and $2,925,000 on Lucas Giolito, who had been sidelined for three months after spraining his elbow that March. He made one Minor League appearance before requiring Tommy John surgery, and since has recovered and blossomed into the best pitching prospect in baseball. The day before news of Aiken's surgery broke, an American League scouting executive suggested that elbow reconstruction wouldn't be the worst thing that could happen to him. "Why not just go ahead and get the Tommy John surgery if that's what you need?" the executive said. "After Hoffman and Giolito and Fedde, you'll get paid. It's better than the uncertainty. The whole thing has been so cloak and dagger that I think it works against him.""
  13. http://www.theplayerstribune.com/brady-aiken-a-fresh-start/ Not sure if he'll declare for the draft or not. Hoffman and Giolito both got drafted a few months after TJ surgery so I would think Aiken will. If not, he'll need to rehab for over a year before we see his stuff again. So he might not be ready for the 2016 draft. So I would expect he goes in this draft. Sadly, Astros fans are not being the most supportive. It'll be interesting to see how the Twins look at this. I wouldn't blame them if they took him and it didn't work out. His ceiling is pretty exciting and having the potential for a true ace (albeit injured) at #6 is a pretty nice opportunity.
  14. I thought the new rules gave them one more year if they failed to sign. But it's academic, just from a practical stand point, they can't punt the #1 overall of 2014 to the #3 in 2016. The FO would be tarred and feathered out of town.
  15. I enjoyed this thread but found it interesting that it went from Rodon to the Astros to Buxton to the Twins CF issues.
  16. I'm honestly curious why you think that. Most prospect guys do, the GM has said he expects Buxton to come up. He's generally considered one of the two best prospects in baseball. The team is basically leaving a hole in CF for him. Almost everything is opposite in Houston - no one thinks Correa will be up this year, he isn't as good a prospect as Buxton (although he is close), hasn't made it to AA and is coming off an ankle injury. The Astros also signed a vet to cover short.
  17. They signed Lowrie and traded for Villanuela. Correa has yet to make it to AA. He won't be up.
  18. Yeah, he's a stud, but even with Buxton's bad year he's the better prospect. And the Astros could easily have had the consensus #1,2 and 15 prospects, all of whom probably debut this year. Instead they have the #3, 30 and a draft pick, none of which are likely to debut this year. That's a "what if" game that'll hurt for a bit.
  19. Nah, Correa is coming off a broken ankle and no one thinks he'll make the majors this year. Almost everyone - including Ryan - thinks Buxton will. Obviously, play on the field will decide it but you're being a bit too cynical.
  20. I think summarizing their thoughts is fine but don't do a ton of cut and paste.
  21. Considering Arcia debuted at 22, I'm not sure that's a fair criticism to throw at the Twins - or Ruesse - as the article doesn't even suggest sending him to the minors.
  22. http://espn.go.com/blog/sweetspot/post/_/id/55980/carlos-rodon-lights-up-twitter-with-dominant-outing About a year ago at this time, Rodon was seen as a lock to go #1 overall to Houston. Instead he had a slightly not-as-dominating year and teams maybe over thought things and two high schoolers went before him and the White Sox got a freaking ace picking third. (Seriously, the Astros passed on Buxton, Bryant and Rodon. Un-freaking-believable) He's struck out 19 in only 12 innings this ST and his last start got ESPN's (and Twitter's) attention. He might not start at the ML level for the same reasons as Bryant but he'll make over 20 starts for the Sox this year (barring injury).
  23. http://espn.go.com/mlb/story/_/id/12562496/miami-marlins-pitcher-jarred-cosart-says-cooperating-mlb-investigation-alleged-gambling MLB is looking into Cosart potentially betting on baseball. IIRC, deadspin had an article on Cosart a year ago where a HS "friend" of his falsely accused him of throwing games and made a few bucks betting against him. Other than Rose, I don't know if any other player has been barred since then but I don't there have been any. I believe Paul Lo Duca was investigated for possible baseball bets but the investigation didn't find much. And funnily enough, Torii Hunter actually may have violated the rules back in 07 when he sent to Royals some champagne for beating the Tigers the last week of the 06 season. Turns out that's also on the "never do that" list. Ryan jumped on the grenade and said he sent the champgne and mlb quickly cleared both.
  24. Jason Parks used to work at BP and is now a scout for the Cubs. He said that Walker is a "first division" type player if (IF is a common word used around Walker) he could control the zone. His defense is first rate and his arm is pretty accurate. He's also a solid baserunner. IF it all came together for Walker (a HUGE IF), think a slightly more rangy Cuddyer - a very solid RFer who, in some years, could be an all-star. But, again, the plate discipline is such a big problem that it's far more likely that he doesn't get beyond AA.
  25. Agreed. I think this draft is going to be really hard to predict b/c the Astros are going to be such a crapshoot. Did they ruin their relationship with Close? Because he is representing a number of the top guys again in this draft - I think I read something on fangraphs that said he and Boras represented 9 of the top 15 guys on their list. Do the Astros stay away from HS pitchers? HS hitters? They have a ton of money, do they go underslot? Do agents trust them to come up with a pre-draft agreement? I have no idea how that plays out. They could end up with a really lame draft. I think Matuella will be gone before the Twins pick and Rogers will be gone. Buehler looks like the "safe" college arm pick and will probably be gone too (I could see Houston nabbing him at 2 and Kriby at 5). And Tate is probably a top 5 guy at this point. Allard and Aiken's injuries probably mean both will be available at #6. And a few HS guys (Cameron) haven't really started yet. So the Twins will have some nice choices, esp among college pitchers.
