  1. One thing that I'd like to see the Twins look into is if they could trade for another teams supp first or second round pick. Obviously, most of the teams that have those picks are trying to stockpile minor league depth so are unlikely to move them but a few - Diamondbacks, Orioles, Pirates or Cleveland might be willing to make a win-now trade. And I'm also not sure if the Twins can swing a trade but last year the Diamondbacks basically sold Touki Toussant so maybe there would be a way to buy such a pick?
  2. Yeah, the Twins have 3 picks in the second round. For a while, they really hit on second round picks but it's been awhile. We'll see if this is the year Johnson gets something. The picks are #56, 73, 74. So there are certainly some interesting players who might be available - and the Twins might be able to save some money and get someone who has fallen at 56. Zach Jackson from Arkansas might be the relief pitcher drafted and converted to starter this year. And Zach Burdi. I forgot about him.
  3. Yeah, Benintendi might be the Aaron Nola of his draft. I don't think he slips as far if it was a redo but the question, if I remember correctly, wasn't about his bat it was more about his physical frame. He's short and has a weak arm. So his success in the low minors might not tell us quite as much. As for draft results, yeah, I wish Buxton and Berrios were tearing up the majors instead of AAA. But I don't think it means they won't. And the other guys are still a few years away - the problem when you draft HS players. I want the Twins to keep drafting the BPA and not worry about him being a college bat or a HS arm or whatnot.
  4. Let's see, since 2012, the Cubs and Twins have drafted near each other and had the same amount of 1st round picks 2012 - (Twins picking before Cubs) - Buxton, Berrios, Bard. Cubs - Alomra, Blackburn, Johnson. 2013 - (Twins picking after Cubs) Twins - Stewart. Cubs - Bryant. 2014 - (Twins picking after Cubs) Twins - Gordon. Cubs - Schwaber. 2015 - (Twins picking before Cubs) Twins - Jay. Cubs - Happ. Ranking these guys you'd place Buxton and Bryant at the top. After that, Bard and Blackburn are probably wash outs. Schwaber made the majors but suffered a really bad injury. The rest probably go (per mlb.com) Berrios, Jay, Happ, Alomra, Gordon, Stewart, Johnson. Obviously, the big difference is that Bryant is playing well in the majors but I'm not sure that means college hitters would have been better picks. For instance, in 2012, the best college bat was Zunino. In 2013, when the Twins picked, it would have been Colin Moran. In 2014 it would have been Michael Conforto. And last year it would have been Andrew Benintendi. Even with hindsight, I'm not sure the Twins would have picked any of those guys over their picks although some would be in the majors faster.
  5. Yeah, I didn't see the play but I'm pretty sure from Molitor's comments Rosario isn't being punished for violating an unwritten rule but rather for doing a bone-headed play. (And his air-mail throw in the first didn't help, either). Interestingly, this reminded me of an on-field incident Molitor had with Chuck Knoblauch when Knobby stole third in a blowout loss. The two were seen arguing in the dugout about the play and basically Molly accused Knobby of trying to inflate his stats and Knobby used F-words. Ahh, the 90s.
  6. Maybe this ties in with TRex's question but is there any sense of how the Twins view guys like Alec Hansen or Bobby Dalbec? Both were pre-season top 20 players but have fallen off b/c of rough seasons.
  7. If they fire Molitor, and I think they should, the should give the keys to either Glynn or Gardy on an interim basis and do a full manager search at the end of the year. Don't let Dougie get stuck with the interim label. Let him keep doing his thing at AA and apply for the job after the season. At the end of the year if Ryan leaves, as Reusse has hinted at, the new GM should feel free to do a complete search for the manager. I would assume that the Twins manager job would be a good one for a lot of managerial candidates.
  8. I disagree. The on-paper talent level on the 40 man is pretty good. I've mentioned before but they have 7 OFers 25 and younger and 5 of them were top 100 prospects (naturally, Molitor is playing the one that wasn't the most). They have solid, on-paper, vets at first, second and third and enough arms to make an average rotation. The bullpen is behind but the arms on the 40 are pretty darn encouraging. Chargois, Burdi, Melotakis, Meyer (if he can't start) could go a long way to making a lockdown BP. This team should be better. And a lot better once those younger players get more PA. Molitor, though, I'm done with.
  9. Park. He's leading DH's in WAR (last I checked) and would add a lot of Korean viewers to the game. Good story.
  10. This really is unbelievable. No way they should be this bad but everything is failing. They look lethargic, don't seem to have a plan at the plate. Hack away. Other than Park and Mauer and sometimes Sano, they just give away tons of at-bats. I don't really like blaming the manager b/c this really should be a player thing but that is just too much for the manager to escape notice. Way too much underachieving. And Molitor doesn't really seem good at working with the younger players. People griped way too much about Gardy on that but Gardy never did what Molly did to Meyer or Rosario today. And if Dean or Rogers or whatnot is going to be making starts, what does that say about May? Didn't he get promised a shot? (Perhaps I'm remembering Molitor's ST comments wrong). I think a lot of last years success wasn't because of Molitor but rather because of Hunter.
  11. I think it means the NL is a lot easier than the AL.
  12. I think that's the second mock I've seen that had Manning to the Twins on it. I'm not sure if I posted this before but mlb.com's write up on him reads: "The son of former NBA player Rich Manning, this 6-foot-6 right-hander was delayed in the start of his senior season because of his own high school basketball exploits. He was rushing up Draft boards as the spring progressed. A premium athlete, Manning uses every inch of his frame to his advantage on the mound. Though he started late because his basketball team made a deep postseason run, Manning was nonetheless up to 96-97 mph with his fastball in early outings. He combines that with hard, power curve that has very good bit to it. His changeup will be his third pitch, but he's shown some feel for it and it should be a viable option in the future. Manning's size, athleticism, stuff and projectability had decision-makers rushing in to see him in Northern California. The Loyola Marymount commit has risen to close to the top of the high school pitching list and could very well hear his name called in the first round."
  13. Keith Law put up his first mock draft today, although you need insider. I don't have it but I think someone with it could tell us who he thinks falls to the Twins http://espn.go.com/blog/mlb-draft/insider/post?id=2618
  14. Moving Nunez makes sense. He has a skill set that a lot of teams - esp NL teams - would want. His return won't be high but it'll be higher than Sulibran. I don't think his trade would be sexy - I suspect Ryan would prefer to go nab a low A player with potential upside that is years away than a AAA relief pitcher.
  15. I suppose it's what you think the unwritten rules cover. It's just the behavior of the game - they evolve with the players over time. This involves things like do not throw at a batters' head to kangaroo courts in the locker room to how you're supposed to treat ball boys. On field stuff, it's mostly about respecting your opponent so I'm not sure what the written rule would be - disrespect the opposing team and lose an out? Seems silly. I recommend reading Jason Turbow's very good book on the subject - the Baseball Codes. It's a very entertaining book and he has a website that discusses the code on current issues.
  16. Well, the argument is that when they win it, Epstein will get all the credit and if they don't win it, Hoyer will get all the blame. I'm not sure that's true but I just don't see the Twins offering him enough $ to leave a great situation.
  17. Yeah, and I believe former pitcher Jose Rijos was busted stealing money from these kids as well.
  18. I thought Hunter's best attributes were keeping the team even after losses and preventing guys from pressing. I thought for a few weeks Sano really looked like he thought he needed to hit a home run. And Rosario has been pressing all year. Perhaps Hunter knew a better way to communicate with young guys that struggled than Molitor has - hell, I'm not sure Molitor really struggled like these guys have. But Hunter, who did struggle, might be better able to walk them through it. Like Mike, I'm not sure what that's worth but I do think it was real. In any event, the players will eventually have to figure it out themselves. My guess is that eventually this team acquires Sano's swag but it might take longer than I thought.
  19. I could see Ryan retiring at any point. He had a battle with cancer and maybe the GM duties are more of a hassle and he just wants to do part time scouting. It that's what he wants, it's fine with me. He's earned it. I like him as a GM but he won't be GM forever and he should enjoy himself. As bad as this season has been, he's done a great job restocking the minors with talent. Personally, I thinks he waits until we have a winning season - like TK - but who knows. But the Pohlads outbidding the Cubs for someone? No chance.
  20. I think baseball probably wants to prevent the richest teams from getting all the talent but I'm not sure a draft solves all the problems. But reading about how these 16-17 year old kids live and are treated, I want something to change. I'm just not smart enough to figure out what the answer should be.
  21. Yeah, the problem with your theory is that when we put the power in one person's hand (say Goodell), you see that he is deeply affected by outside forces. NFL needs to look tough after Ray Rice? Peterson gets a historic punishment. He doesn't have to answer to anyone. Unwritten rules - in any workplace - the violators have to answer to their co-workers. Part of your concern seems to be inflating this into criminal justice. It's not. It's a game.
  22. Well, I suspect you're wrong if you trying to imply that Odor was attempting to do anything that any MI wouldn't have done on the throw.
  23. I'm not sure how you think the league is immune to taking things too far, as opposed to the players - heck the players are far more democratic than what we've seen from absolutist sports leagues. Most of us think that the NHL and NFL have seen their power grabs go too far. I think if you're starting to compare things to neighborhood militias, you've probably lost objectivity.
  24. You could watch the video. If you're implying that the route of his throw was low so that had Bautista not slid, he'd have been hit by the ball, sure. But that's absolutely how MI are taught to throw the ball. Nothing wrong with that, at all. You're claim that he was throwing at Bautista's head made me think that he grabbed the ball and threw it at Buatista (sorta like Hunter at the Cleveland pitcher so many years ago). Rather, what he did was threw it low to force the slide.
