  1. Well, good luck to Plouffe.
  2. http://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2016/11/chris-sale-trade-rumors-nationals.html?utm_source=feedburner&utm_medium=feed&utm_campaign=Feed%3A+MlbTradeRumors+%28MLB+Trade+Rumors%29 "Rosenthal lists the Angels’ Tyler Skaggs and Matt Shoemaker as potential under-the-radar trade candidates, speculating that the team could potentially move someone such as Skaggs (as part of a trade package) if it meant landing a premium second baseman like Minnesota’s Brian Dozier." Both Skaggs and Shoemaker are under team control until 2021. Shoemaker is a back end type but Skaggs always had more potential (#12 prospect overall and making the majors at 20 years old) and will only be 25 next year. Skaggs isn't enough, obviously, and I'm not sure what else the Angels could produce but a deal with Skaggs as a secondary piece could be something.
  3. I'd be happy with Giolito. Giolito has some concerns - injuries and he didn't dominate AA quite as much as people thought - but his upside is still tremendous. It's also somewhat similar to the Span/Meyer trade although both Dozier and Giolito are better than their compatriots.
  4. Yankees traded Brian McCann and his 2yr/34m + potential 15m vesting option to the Astros for a couple young pitchers. http://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2016/11/astros-acquire-brian-mccann.html?utm_source=feedburner&utm_medium=feed&utm_campaign=Feed%3A+MlbTradeRumors+%28MLB+Trade+Rumors%29 Yankees are also giving the Astros about 6m to cover some of the contract. The arms they are getting back are both far away and pretty raw but have pretty good stuff. "While financial considerations surely played a role in the swap, the Yankees were no doubt intrigued by the two player they received. Abreu is the more highly regarded of the two; as J.J. Cooper of Baseball America explains, he throws a live fastball that occasionally nears the triple-digits. With a four-pitch arsenal, he perhaps has a chance to stick as a starter. Still, he only just turned 21 and struggled with his command last year at the Class A and High-A levels. Guzman, meanwhile, has even more velocity, with his heater ticking up to 102-103 mph at times. Cooper notes, though, that he’s more effective when he’s operating at a slightly lower velocity (in his case, the upper-nineties). While the long-term outlook suggests that Guzman will end up in the pen, he is said to have a promising slider and also a change-up that’s in the works. The 20-year-old has yet to move past Rookie ball, but showed big strikeout ability (12.2 K/9) in his time in the Gulf Coast and Appalachian leagues last year."
  5. Good for Gardy. Interestingly, Lovullo was one of the finalists for the Twins job with Molitor, IIRC. I hope the Dbacks do well.
  6. I wonder if the pendulum on vets vs. prospects has swung back toward vets a bit. There have been a few trades this last year that seemed like one team gave up lots of prospects. But if the Twins could get someone like Bellinger for Dozier, I'd be thrilled.
  7. Today is Give to the Max day where you can support local charities. For those concerned with a Trump presidency I can suggest giving to the ACLU. All donations today will be double by matching donors so today is the day to give for the most impact. You can donate here: https://www.razoo.com/us/story/American-Civil-Liberties-Union-Of-Minnesota-Foundation
  8. I'm not sure those three would A) be the best return for Dozier and B ) if trading Dozier is the best way to improve the bullpen. Perhaps FA or other trades could upgrade the pen without using our best trade chip.
  9. I don't disagree that the Twins should be doing things like that but every team tries to do that. It wasn't remotely unique to the Cubs. Cleveland is probably the better model. They got very little from FA signings but a ton from farm development and trades.
  10. Let's see how the FO fixes the pitching staff before we worry about predictions. But I do expect a number of the recently graduated prospects to be very good.
  11. Not commenting on anything other than this sentence but, while his view of the court is ... different, apparently Thomas is one of the nicest justices.
  12. Houston had 6 losing seasons in a row - including three historic ones - and, while many still refuse to accept it, the Cubs success had much more to do with their FA signings and trades than their farm system. The Twins had 4 losing seasons, a winning one and a season from the depths of hell (which would only have been the Astros 4th worst losing season in their little run).
  13. Mike hit on the smart points but does the economy really feel that secure to anyone? These last few years, I've been very surprised by how well the stock market has been doing vs. how I feel the economy should be doing. I think the economy should take a hit.* * Again, I'm just some idiot on the internet.
  14. Another note of worry on TSLA is that they were (arguably) somewhat dependent on tax credits and rebates for solar power that a Trump presidency might not continue.
  15. WFC (and other banks) had a pretty nice week until today. Probably not a bad idea to throw some money into banks and oil for a bit.
  16. I'm not sure if Sano, Buxton, Berrios really fit into the 'bounce back' category. They are all young guys adjusting to the league. They'll be fine. I think guys like Gibson, Hughes, Perkins etc are more the bounce back types we need to do well. I'm not sure what to expect from them but I do think the young guys on the team will be better because 1) they are very talented and 2) players get better with experience.
  17. Well, there can be lots of reasons why which seems to be a different thread. But several of the ten guys straight out bombed - Benson and Hicks. Pinto was borderline but I guess you can blame it on injuries. Arcia had a good couple years and then bombed out. Gibson is a ML starter. Kepler, Polanco, Buxton, Sano and Berrios are still in wait and see? I tend to be more glass is half full than you and what I think we're seeing is a pretty good farm system turning guys who wouldn't normally be into pretty decent prospects so Steil has built up some pretty decent depth even after those graduations. They were in playoff contention all of 2015 and while last year sucked most of that can be blamed on the pitching side (and coaching). Offensively, they seem to have the pieces for a pretty good nucleus. But, again, that's not really this thread.
  18. I think this is still a fairly encouraging list. Since 2012, the Twins have graduated 10 top 100 prospects out of their system plus a few other guys who had been top 100 previously (May, Rosario) as well as a number of players who weren't on prospect lists - Dozier being the best. That's pretty good. And the system still has a few pretty exciting guys that will be in AA or higher next year.
  19. It seemed to me that for several years the payroll was less than it could have been - even during the time we were winning the AL central. The excuse was something like "we like the players we have and this is what we have to pay them." But the team never went over payroll. There was never a period when ownership said, "the FO and the players got us pretty close, we're going to go out and spend a bit more to put us over the top."
  20. I will never, ever believe that payroll limits weren't always a big part of the way the Pohlad family runs this team and until we actually spend money - both on payroll and in international signings - we shouldn't give ownership the benefit of the doubt on that.
  21. I like Park so let's see what happens. I hope he succeeds.
  22. I wonder if there was a sense to muzzle him b/c of the sexual assault allegations over the years and they didn't want him out there. And I know he fought with advocates over his crime bill. But he seemed under used in this campaign. He is the best politician (as a politician) of my lifetime, hands down. His speech for Obama in 2012 was an amazing reminder of his ability.
  23. Not sure if this was posted yet but it seems like Bill Clinton had a better understanding of the situation than the campaign - "in general, Bill Clinton’s viewpoint of fighting for the working class white voters was often dismissed with a hand wave by senior members of the team as a personal vendetta to win back the voters who elected him, from a talented but aging politician who simply refused to accept the new Democratic map." http://www.politico.com/story/2016/11/hillary-clinton-aides-loss-blame-231215 If Politico is correct, then HRC's campaign team was incredibly stupid.
  24. Big league arm, not legit arm. Probably means something like (from the Mets) A) Dunn and Lindsey (#4 and 6 on their top 10) or Logan Verrett (a backend starter) and Domenic Smith (#54 overall prospect). Maybe we aim for different prospects but I think that's the type of return the article is hinting at.
  25. For those of you who are a bit concerned, one thing you can do is become a member of the ACLU. The ACLU is the largest civil rights non-profit in the world and argues more cases at the US Supreme Court than anyone other than the DOJ. I know several of the people that work at the ACLU-MN and they are all pretty good people who care deeply about our Constitution and its protections. You can join here ---> https://www.aclu-mn.org/get-involved/supportus/becomeamember/ And you can read more about the ACLU and its efforts to protect our Constitution from several Trump proposals here ---> https://www.aclu.org/ I'd also point out that the ACLU is non-partisan and has sued the Obama administration on everything from national surveillance, privacy, immigrant rights, police abuse cases and racial profiling.
