Per Gleeman: last night's announced attendance of 10240 was the smallest since April 30, 2002 at the dome. Quite the turnaround since the excitement of winning their first playoff series roughly 18 months ago. Possibly the worst business management decisions since "new Coke." They've seemingly done everything in their power to turn people away since then, starting with "right sizing" payroll before the echos of the postseason crowd had even settled.

It'd be nice if we had a GD manager who ensured what they think they want is actually what they get. That makes sure the team understands, practices and VALUES playing defense crispy and effectively. And the clown show last night isnt an isolated incident. This complete lack of execution of the principles of playing the game of baseball is a reflection of the front office and more directly, the manager. It shows up in multiple ways day in and day out. They can't control opponents on the base paths, and they dont really even try. They can't execute simple defensive plays. They never, ever try to advance runners when they're in a close game. Anybody can play anywhere. Catchers play every other day no matter what. 5 innings from the starter, no matter what. Nobody has an actual role in the pen. And in and on. Yes, they're short of offensive talent. But they compound that issue with utterly awful management. A manager or leader, in any walk of life, tends to get the level of performance from his team that he/she allows.

Add to that basically none of these 26-29 year olds get to the big leagues with a position to play. Freeking Royce Lewis, a number 1 overall pick, the star of your minor leagues for over half a decade, with several years of big league time now, STILL doesn't have an established position. Criminal

Funderburk doesn't have the command to consistently pitch effectively in the show. He doesn't have the quality of stuff to overcome that weakness. I doubt he ever will. Just a space filler.

How is a MLB manager influencing their performance? Is this a serious question?? Just in case: Who sets the lineup? Makes substitutions? Makes pitching decisions? Who sets priorities? Provides means and strategies to achieve them? Rewards positive behaviors and punishes poor ones? Who establishes what a team works on and prioritizes from February to October? Who decides if infeld/outfield is taken, DAILY? Determines cutoff rotation strategies and ensures every member of the team understands and follows them? Who determines what remedial actions are necessary when those rotation strategies dont haooen? Who decides to bring the infield in in the second inning? Have his pitcher forego the slide step, his catcher stay on one knee, and NEVER EVER pitch out even in obvious stealing situations? Who decides batting practice is required, or leaves it up to players? Who decides if it's ok to jog to 1st on ground balls and pop-ups? I can go on and on but you already know all this. You're just not willing to admit these, and many other things, fall on the manager. And the results are quite apparent. They've been apparent for some time--a long tims--even if full impact has been masked by playing in the ALC. Fire his ass. People lose their jobs for poor performance all the time, in all walks of life. Rocco is nothing special, deserving of his job just because someone gave it to him, or because he said hi to you once in Ft Myers. Baseball managers have been getting fired for 150 years. This is a zero sum business. For every loss, someone wins. And that's the ultimate job performance metric.
