  1. Yup. That would be an interesting topic for discussion some day. As a monetary economist I recognize how ridiculous it is to require a "double coincidence of wants" in trading. Cash is much more efficient. But of course it raises other issues because the Yankees could simply spend $100m on acquiring the top players rather than having to give up players (or wait for free agency).
  2. That happens in football as well. They have a certain amount of time to get up to standards.
  3. I think that Hove and Brighton are kind of twin cities. Anyone for Minneapolis and St. Paul Twins?
  4. Promoted to the PL for next season. Would have won the second division had not Villa drawn level late in the final match.
  5. Everton would have been my second choice. I didn't much like David Moyes, though.
  6. So Santiago to the DL according to reports. I wonder who gets a chance now???
  7. Maybe they cut away because of Dick and Jack's difficulties...
  8. Southampton have been the mirror image of Pompey: rising to be relevant in the PL at the same time that Portsmouth dropped divisions. I do think that relegation would make baseball more interesting. But the way I've thought of it (with the current minor league structure) is three divisions of 10 teams with relegation and promotion between these divisions (but not to AAA, AA, etc.). The playoffs would consist of 8 teams: the winner of the 3rd division, the top two teams in the 2nd division, and the top 5 teams in the premier division. If the World Series winner happened to be from the 3rd division, that team would get promoted straight to the premier level, otherwise its the usual 2 or 3 top teams move up and the corresponding bottom teams move down.
  9. There's a reason why they all wear claret and blue. West Ham stole Villa's shirts after a game between the clubs and have been wearing those colors ever since. The "Clarets" of Burnley didn't steal the actual uniforms, but did explicitly copy them. Portsmouth made one big mistake: Harry Redknapp. He overspent and didn't get the wins that would have paid the bills. Villa fans are chuckling because their arch-rivals Birmingham City hired him last year.
  10. I'm not sure who that would have been. Randy Lerner was pretty unpopular with the Villa fans by the time he sold out last year. Sir Doug Ellis, the previous owner, was also pretty unpopular, but my sense is that most of the animus was internal, not external. At the time I became a fan, Martin O'Neill was the manager (currently managing Republic of Ireland side), but he was both respected and popular. Quit in a huff in August 2010 when Lerner sold my favorite player James Milner to the sheik at Man City.
  11. Aston Villa. I liked their style of play, their colors, the fact that they had a charity on their shirts rather than a betting company (no longer), their strong academy to allow to build from within rather than buying players, the fact that they were not one of the Big Four but were challenging them for Champions League spots, and the American connection through goalkeeper Brad Friedel and owner Randy Lerner. Well, they still have the same kit colors!
  12. Your introduction made me think about how one chooses a team for which to cheer when there is no obvious geographical or other tie. I faced this ten years ago when I first (got cable and) started following English football. As I reflected on my decision, I realized that I was looking for the most Twins-like team in a lot of ways. More ways than I had initially reckoned: five years of downward spiral in the table followed by inevitable relegation! Yet, somehow, once that random allegiance has been formed, I can't give it up. My wife asks me why I keep rooting for them in the second division when I can't even watch them on TV any more. It must be some combination of Minnesota-bred loyalty and Minnesota-bred stubbornness. I pointed out to her that she shouldn't complain; she's had a few losing seasons over the years but I'm still married to her!
  13. Or maybe bring up Granite? (Though he's likely to have a Rocky start.)
  14. Interesting. No doubt that he is strong. Does StatCast measure bat speed on strikeouts? Or the margin by which the bat missed the ball? Surely those metrics must be coming up if they are not here yet.
  15. True, but I'll take the zero on the board.
  16. It would be too bad if Dozier has to sit for a while. The guy we're anxious to bring up doesn't play 2b. Although I guess Rosario played there pretty consistently for a couple of years in the lower minors. Anybody want to see his glove in the infield? <Duck>
  17. MLB.com is saying that the Twins are signing Jelfry Marte, a Domican shortstop who is the #3 international prospect this year. I'm all for getting more talent, and many players who start out as shortstops move elsewhere, but I'm imagining a Twins' minor league team with seven shortstops, a pitcher, and a catcher! http://m.twins.mlb.com/news/article/239902156/twins-agree-with-intl-prospect-jelfry-marte/?topicId=27118388
  18. Yes. And compare to the NL where there is no race.
  19. Jorge is impressive. Cool as ice. Decent stuff, and a great head on his shoulders.
  20. I guess Butera was watching Nick Punto back in the day!
  21. My goodness. He does hit the ball a long way!
  22. Pioneer Press headline says Tyler Jay needs thoracic outlet surgery.
