  1. At the beginning of the season, I made a comment that I couldn't figure out why Boyer was on the ML roster. Boy, was I wrong. He brings an element out of the pen that we haven't seen in a while. A couple people mentioned it a few pages back but this is a true team -- never know who's gonna get it done on a game-by-game basis, and that is really beneficial in so many ways. The pitching and the clutch hitting in the first 6 weeks of the season has been a very welcome sight. Nice to have a team that actually does the things to win games like other teams do too.
  2. I thought about that too when I first saw the video because I thought the subject was referring to a catcher's balk (shows you how much I wasn't paying attention to the pitcher at first blush) but Perez keeps his foot in the catcher's box up until the ball is thrown. If he had jumped out with both feet then we'd have a case for that.
  3. As a HS umpire for 11 years (and yes, HS and MLB rules are different in certain aspects), I wouldn't have called this a balk. Yes, it looks weird and often times when we see something out of the ordinary, we immediately think it's a balk. It's an odd looking move and likely an alteration from how he normally throws it but his motion is continuous throughout the delivery. So I would agree with how Jimmer interpreted it and what the umpires on the field ruled.
  4. That's what I was asking when he got thru the 1st inning without allowing a run.
  5. Jordan Schafer is batting .121 right now and doesn't seem to bring anything to this team. I'm 39 and have baseball experience from my high school days. Can I have a uniform too?
  6. Annnnnnnd, why is Boyer on the major league roster?
  7. Masters update: Spieth -17 thru 8 Rose -13 thru 8 Phil -12 thru 9 DJ -10 thru 11 Rory -8 thru 9 Tiger -5 thru 9 and may have busted his wrist on a tree root with his 2nd shot on 9. He's in a bit of pain.
  8. Is it me or does circus music start to play every time the White Sox hit a pop up?
  9. It's to make sure the ball doesn't pop out like it did on Escobar. He half-assed the catch as it was anyway so he deserved what he got out of it.
  10. How does THAT happen? When I was in HS, my coach had something he yelled out every time we one-handed a fly ball or pop up -- TWO HANDS TURKEY!! I say it to myself every time I see it on TV or when I umpire. TK and his fundamentals must be seething mad right now.
  11. And birdies it after snap hooking his drive about 100 yards off the tee. Spieth -14 Phil -9 Hoff -9 DJ -8 Tiger, Casey, Rory, Streel -7
  12. I'll ask the same question of Pelfrey that I do of Nolasco -- what the heck does anyone in the organization see in this guy to give him that kind of money to pitch at this level? I'd much rather see a minor leaguer up here getting his feet wet than this has-been.
  13. Good inning, boys (clapping). Now let's hang on for dear life with Pelfrey on the mound.
  14. Maybe not MOST important but it was the play that Dozier didn't make in the 1st with a guy on 2nd and nobody out. Arcia at least got the runner over. Didn't mean as much in the long run but still smart, the kind of stuff this team is going to need to do to compete. Love the running game right now. Gotta think Molly is gonna want them to be aggressive on the bases.
  15. 1st Twins game -- 1990 in Baltimore. Kirby hit 2 dingers and had 5 RBI and somehow, Allan Anderson, a pitcher who I maligned every time he took the mound, got a win. 1st Twins game in Dome -- Game 3 of 2002 ALDS vs. A's. Sat 2 rows from the roof behind home plate, just avoiding a constant leak (the good ole Dome). Watched the leadoff batter for the A's hit in inside-the-park HR past a diving Hunter in center. Thought we were screwed for the series after the game was over. Went to Game 4 the next day and felt much better. 1st Twins game at Target -- July of 2010, right after the All-Star break against the Indians. Went to two games, lost them both. Went to a Twins game in Tampa two weeks later, they lost that one too. In between seeing them at Target and seeing them in Tampa, they went 10-1.
  16. As long as humanly possible...preferably 2016. This guy is no good and the Twins are wasting their money on him. Not sure what anyone in the organization sees in him because he has been far below average since they signed him.
  17. I wish someone in the organization would tell me what they see in Ricky Nolasco. If a dummy like me can tell he's terrible just based on what we saw in 1/2 the season last year, why am I still seeing him in a Twins uniform?
  18. If a Twins player hits 36 HR, I might eat my hat. Only way that's going to happen is if most of the damage is done on the road...or the Dome is miraculously rebuilt. We do remember that Target Field is where Twins homers go to die, right? I will have the pepper ready in preparation if I'm wrong (hat already has enough salt on it....I know...ewwwwww).
  19. Haven't bothered to read all of the posts in this thread so my opinion may match some already stated... I will be highly disappointed if the Twins didn't at least reach out and inquire about Maddon's interest. Yeah, his price tag may be way out of their territory and if so, that's fine. I can live with that. But at least come out and tell the public that you were interested in the guy but he costs too much. To not do so sends a horrible message to the fans. And I don't think it's on Maddon or his representation to call anyone about a job. If he or his people haven't called the Twins yet, then it can be assumed that he didn't leave the Rays to campaign for our job. He's in love with Chicago and he'll likely get the Cubs job because everything about that job fits him and his personality (and his price tag). But if the Cubs gig falls through, then Mattingly's seat will be scorching hot in LA.
  20. We can't base our decisions on what 'could have' happened. We can only go based on the evidence that is there. And in this case, the fan's glove was in the field of play. It wouldn't have had any bearing on the final outcome of the game and there's no sense arguing it but for my own education, I'm very curious as to how they came to this determination. Maybe Gardy will say something about it in postgame.
  21. May has the looks of a good reliever. Give him any longer than 3 or 4 innings and all hell breaks loose. As an umpire, I'd LOVE to know how they came up with their decision to call that a home run. The fan's glove is clearly in the field of play. It nearly made contact with Schafer's glove. And I don't think that the ball had enough to get into the seats if the fan doesn't reach over. Yet, somehow, it's a home run. The slo-mo looked like it showed the ball hitting Schafer's glove which means he overran it and could have easily caught it. But how they come up with a home run decision mystifies me.
  22. That's what I was thinking the entire time he was mowing the Twins down in the first 6 innings. I guess when he gets away from 'pitch to contact', he can thrive. If I had the time and the patience, I'd love to take a look at pitchers who have left the Twins and gone on to success elsewhere because of the different philosophy.
  23. And THAT'S why you don't ever slide headfirst into first base. Schafer had him beat, just had to run thru the base. I thought we killed this disease when Nick Punto left.
  24. 75% was obviously a frustrated liberal number. Of the 14 pitchers on the ML roster, I would be fine with seeing Gibson, Hughes, May, Milone, Perkins, and MAYBE Pressley, Duensing, and Thielbar. This is all going based on the feelings I get when I see the individual on the mound. Burton's no good. Deduno hasn't been the same since his arm injury, which is a shame because he had some smoke before he got hurt. Fien does nothing for me. Nolasco has to have some trade value. Swarzak is a small tic below Burton on the frustration meter. Pino could be a reliable reliever but I don't think he grades out as a starter. Keep in mind, these are opinions. My brain gets lost very quickly in the cesspool of metrics and if a pitcher can't get a 3rd out because of bloops or shots pinballing off walls, then I'm gonna lay the blame on him. Actual errors are different.
  25. Twins put 42 runs on the board in the 4-game series against the Tigers this weekend. With the exception of May, none of the Twins starters in those 4 games pitched into the 6th inning. If that doesn't tell us where the offseason priorities should lie, I don't know what does. With the exception of 3 or 4 pitchers, this staff is a disaster and I'm hoping that there's about 75% turnover in the offseason. I know that it's probably an impossibility but I'm getting tired of rolling my eyes every time I see certain guys on the mound.
