Would the Twins Be Better Off Trading Royce Lewis?

I think you need to give him until the end of the year at least. He has been making improvements at the plate and I would not want to give up on him yet. He was moved off of 3B by the team, he was not a butcher there and was making improvement as he got more reps. It was part of a plan to make room for Culpepper, so he willingly moved to first and is looking competent there and getting better. Lewis has an it factor that you don't have in any other player except Buxton. It has to start translating to more production on the field but he is not someone I would give away. And there is no replacement for him. I am not going to count on Clemens to have another career year. What he is doing this year is helpful but I am not going to move someone in hopes that it continues when he is already 30. There is no logjam in the infield, you have Culpepper and Houston close to the major leagues and that is it. There are no first baseman ready to come up. -
How can Milwaukee have one of the best records in the league with a below average payroll. Are their owners making all the personnel decisions. Every decision maker in any industry has to work within the parameters given to them by their bosses. In baseball teams have been able to build winning teams with smaller payrolls. Should the payroll have been reduced two years ago the way it was, no. But how high do you think it should have gone. It's not all about money. This offseason Falvey had at least $14m at his disposal and he signed Bell and Caratini, which at the time were questionable signings. And allocated no resources to the bullpen. So we make the playoffs this year and go play two games on the road and lose both. I would prefer to build towards a sustainable winning team, not worry about one year.

What has changed in the front office, you still have all the same personnel. The only change is Falvey is gone. And Zoll has been a key Falvey confidante for the last 5 years at least. Why would you expect a change in philosophy now.

Since Zoll has taken over in February when payroll was already set for the year has he been denied taking on any additional payroll if the moves would help the team. Let me answer that for you, we don't know. We also don't know what the conversations are. If you have to wait for a few years to judge Zoll after you have already have had almost three years then this organization may never recover. It is easy to blame ownership, but you have to work within the resources given. Other GM's have been able to do it like Milwaukee with the one of the best records in baseball and a below average payroll. Falvey and Zoll have not done a good job of producing a winning team consistently.

Do you think the Pohlads are out there scouting and evaluating the options. It is Zoll's job to set the roster and the Pohlads to say yay or nay if not within budget. We have no idea of the conversations between Zoll and Tom P. I would assume he would be open to reasonable moves based on his comments.

Question for you, I hear what you said about Tommy P. but Zoll is the one filling the roster and making these decisions. How much do you put on him for not making changes when it sounds like he had support from ownership. And will anything change with him in charge. That is my biggest fear, we will just keep treading water.

I think he is a good back up but would he be exposed the more he plays. As much as teams need catching I would think someone would have given him a shot by now if he could.

Kind of like when Buxton struck out yesterday with the go ahead runs on base. Many on here love to single out Royce when many others have not succeeded in the same situations. He has been hitting since he came back from St. Paul until the All Star break. He has started out slow like many others since they came back.

But you have to give who you identify as prospects AB's to develop and with this roster construction that is not happening. Edit: A point of clarification, I said 12 outfielders, not prospects. I never claimed they were all prospects.

Thank you, that was my point, and that doesn't include Keaschall and Rosario. There are just not enough AB's to go around. You need depth but you also need balance. At this point Wallner needs to be traded even if for a bucket for balls, I still believe in him and would like to see what a change of scenery would do for him. But obviously he is not in their plans but yet is playing every day in St. Paul. Fedko is another that probably should be removed from the 40 man roster. I would hate to see Larnach go but if they are not contenders he is one they need to move on from and even Bell as well opening up the DH slot. But this roster construction has to be addressed sooner than later. And don't bring in more outfielders unless they are a clear upgrade over the top prospects.

They need to pick a lane in the seven or less days. Their farm system is highly rated, so use those assets by either upgrading the current roster or trade away anyone blocking the kids and bring them up. No more half measures. There are a lot of great suggestions on different trades here, but what is the end goal. If they truly want to contend and not just get into the playoffs, they need at least two relievers that you can rely on in the back end, a starting pitcher and one more bat in the lineup that lets you upgrade over Bell as your cleanup hitter. If they can't make that commitment, trade Larnach, Bell and Jeffers and maybe Martin for whatever you can get. You need to clear room in the outfield. Bring up Jenkins, Culpepper when healthy. Decide what other two outfielders to bring up. Let the young guys grow together, have patience because there will be hitting struggles and missed plays in the field due to inexperience. Shoot for a window of 28 or 29 to truly compete. See what you have and fill in holes the next couple of offseasons. But build a team that can truly contend. Winning a World Series is hard, but give me a team that at least feels like you have a chance to get there, not just make the third wildcard. That you don't need every break and get really lucky to make it. That is this year's team. Good teams make their own breaks and create their own luck.

Yes but if they are all at the same level how do you give them enough AB's to continue their development. We have 12 outfielders between Minnesota and St. Paul when ERod is healthy. At some point you can't clog your rosters. You need to have some balance.

That is not the issue, it's why they are not and either reason if they don't I won't agree with it, nothing I can do about it. But I can make my opinion known Accept a different opinion.

Yes there will be a lockout on December 1st. How far into spring training or the season it goes is all a guess. We will have to agree to disagree about whether Zoll is using this as his reasoning for making moves and if it is the action that what we would like or follow,

You want to replace someone who is hitting .292 with and OPS of .839, that sounds bizzare to me. And what has Roden done in his major league stints with us and Toronto to warrant making that move. Now if there is an injury or trade, he might be next man up and that is fine, even though I would prefer Jenkins in that scenario. But I am not forcing him into the lineup just because we traded for him.

It's one game and I am glad he is doing well, but he has not done enough IMO to take AB's away from Keaschall or Larnach.

And so did Roden, they both didn't do their job in extra innings. They both made plays to produce the first run but didn't do their job later in the game.

Has it been out there from sources within the Twins or baseball or here in TD land. You have an opinion that is why you think they are making the moves they are. I have a different opinion and I understand the landscape and I have already explained my thoughts. Zoll is doing the same as Falvey and favors the more conservative moves. Just like having Outman break camp over Roden and ERod, when he was clearly outplayed.

I am not down on him, he did what a good bench player should do, he produced when called upon and I am glad.
