  1. ty cobb (ops+ 168) certainly belongs in the conversation. check out charles leerhsen's ty cobb: a terrible beauty (2015). exhaustive research depicts something far beyond than the bigoted, peer-hated, spike-sharpening monster myth. it instead paints cobb as a hot-tempered but misunderstood perfectionist admired by peers who dealt with a suffocating life as the first media-conjured sports superstar. which is not to mention the 4189 hits ...
  2. baseball player #1 during a rain delay: "i hope the rain keeps up." baseball player #2: "why is that?" baseball player #1: "so it doesn't come down!"
  3. if buxton were leading off it woulda been a grand slam.
  4. maybe return hicks to the mound and trade him to the national league where he can be an above-average hitter every fifth day.
  5. few if any are arguing that he's anything but bad right now ...
  6. similar question: did people think cano or pujols would maintain what they were for 10 years?
  7. graham > stauffer for sure. but also fair to mention that six of graham's nine inherited runners have scored (six of 13 for stauffer).
  8. strong theories (aside from the specious mattingly comparison as addressed above).
  9. mantle mangled his knee early in his career (long before today's miracle surgery) and drank himself into premature decline (famously saying "if i knew i was gonna live this long i woulda took a lot better care of myself"); mattingly is said to have wrecked his back in a bout of clubhouse horseplay.
  10. mattingly's decline is widely attributed to chronic back problems -- not simply because he "reached his 30s."
  11. i wonder what your doubts are based on. in other words, how can a guy go from a hall-of-fame-bound hitter to subpar just by being "tired of it all"? he's been a successful athlete in several sports all his life -- i imagine he's frustrated yet driven to reclaim his place near the top. but tired of it all? at 32? i don't see him as the type who's eager to put up his feet and count his millions ...
  12. back in the '60s and '70s, schoolboy football players who "got their bell rung" were back in the game asap. i can recall guys staggering around and not knowing what day it was ... coaches and other players thought it was funny -- but if you didn't get back in the game you were considered soft. likewise, i'd guess professional athletes of the not-too-distant past hid their symptoms and got back in the game asap. and that accurate records of concussions and their aftermath are scant.
  13. just seems like his problems must be related to concussions. if so, all bets are off until and unless he recovers.
  14. astros just lost seven straight. it happens. but the season is 162.
  15. more like eddie feigner -- the king and his court.
  16. an interesting and nicely punctuated trip down memory lane ...
  17. you mean the song by vampire weekend? or the grammatical annoyance?
  18. again, thanks everyone. (and one space IS proper modern grammar; at least no space won't bug me anymore!) back to baseball ...
  19. makes sense -- hadn't thought of that (wait'll you get to be my age!). sincere thanks.
  20. i'll probably get branded as grammar police, but i'm really curious about the no spaces after periods that some posters seem to favor. by the way, one space (not two) is the modern way to go -- two is from the old days of typesetting. nevertheless (and back to baseball), i'm anxious to see what vargas.2 can bring to the lineup ...
  21. just curious: what happened to spaces after periods? whynotremovethemall?
  22. can't argue that two walks on the season is a little lame. still, he's got a .699 ops overall. and remember -- the original point is that he's a much better bet than the rest of the group you named ...
