Article: The Time For A Buxton Extension Is Now
slash129 replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
In support of a Buxton extension and without trying to respond individually anymore to those in the wait-and-see camp (very valid position), it should also be noted that despite the peaks and troughs (often extended) of his offensive game, Mr. Buxton has always "forgot-about-it" when he runs out to centerfield each half inning. That's not necessarily a measurable statistic, but it's a very desirable trait of professionalism in a multi-faceted game like baseball. As a mid-to-small market team, the Twins will need to get some competitive advantage by figuring out how to measure some of those immeasurables and then proceed with getting the best deal on extensions. I don't think 7/150 is a wise gamble, but doing some projection, cost controlling arb years and then attempting to secure or option even 1 or 2 FA years with Byron Buxton is in the team's best interest .... this off-season .... IMO. -

I would agree if the Twins played in a Draft Kings league. -
Article: Hard Work Jorge Pays Off
slash129 replied to Ted Schwerzler 's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Save Lindor and Correa, and I could see being bullish and projecting Polanco's bat over any of the other AL shortstops. I'm not necessarily expecting it, but I wouldn't be surprised. On the glove side ... hoping to see him continue to improve and move from the bottom tier of AL shortstops defensively into that middle tier Once again, save Lindor and Correa, and Polanco is also the youngest of any AL shortstop. Leads me to think .... I wonder if a Gordon featured package could get us Duffy off the Royals. -
Reading that article - very well done BTW - I started thinking the same thing. Maybe the 13% usage makes it harder to sit on and adjust to even in the alternate arm slot. Just thinking out loud.

Article: Projecting The 2021 Twins Line-Up
slash129 replied to Cody Christie's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
That's a pretty quick dismissal of the two-time TD minor league hitter of the year given the number of prospects in the line-up you propose. Dozier, with his durability, might be 34 in 2021, but I'd bet he at least doubles whatever WAR figure Javier supplies and comes out ahead of Gordon as well.- 33 replies

Article: Projecting The 2021 Twins Line-Up
slash129 replied to Cody Christie's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
My stab: C: Rortvedt/Garver 1B: Rooker 2B: Dozier 3B: Polanco SS: Lewis LF: Rosario CF: Buxton RF: Kepler DH: Sano Bench: Wade, Javier Polanco and Dozier could be flipped in the infield. Gordon gets moved for pitching. Kirilloff gets an extended look sometime in 2020 or 2021 (someone will get injured at some point). His options and the org's desire to have him play daily keep him in AAA longer than any of us would like (good problem to have). Eddie leaves via FA and Alex takes over for good in 2022.- 33 replies

Given his durability, resilience and leadership, do you think 4 years with a 5th that vests on PAs in the 4th would be doable? Loved reading that article ... Thanks!

Article: Will Max Kepler Take the Next Step in 2018?
slash129 replied to Tom Froemming's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I think the first sentence of the article nails it. Kepler is on a team with a lot of exciting young players. He also has a mild manner, so he's doesn't stick out otherwise. His numbers look like a good young player adjusting to the big league game. His MiLB BABIPs were much higher, so expect that to even out with some better luck and as he becomes more of a steady pro. From the interviews that I've heard with him, he appears to have good make-up and seems to be someone that would be open to critique and making adjustments to improve his game. I wouldn't be surprised with numbers like what Marty Cordova put up when he won ROY. I hope Max Kepler is a Twin for a long time. -
Nick stated that it was a combination of value to the team for ongoing success and possibly as a trade chip. The relief pitchers in question are already performing at the major league level, so they are somewhat of a known as far as ongoing success goes. They might not hold the trade value of a top 10 org prospect, but those prospects are still prospects. It's hard to project Rooker for the ongoing success side when he could pull a Paul Russo and never get there. On the other hand, Mauer gets a 0 in the contract and trade chip fields of the calculation, so that offsets his current value as hitter, defender, veteran presence and twilighting face of the franchise.

Understood, but shouldn't calls to rid the team of Sano based on all of this be silenced as well.

Let's remember that the alleged (yes, I'm sticking with the legal lingo) incidents with both the photographer and the usher took place over two years ago. Unless details of other incidents that took place more recently are revealed, I'm not sure "continued erratic behavior" best describes Mr. Sano. For all we know, the Twins didn't know about the photographer incident but observed enough of their star third baseman's behavior that he has already required some correction. Perhaps his statement about having utmost respect for women and especially women in professional sports is a result of correction and realization that his past behavior wasn't cool. I'm not trying to say that any possible incidents in the past don't matter and don't deserve resolution, but I'm reading way to many articles and posts that treat everything like it happened (if it happened) yesterday.

From an asset value standpoint, I guess you'd have to do an exercise on whether or not Rooker could bring a bigger return than any of these 15 and your assumed 5 (I assume the same 5). As far as ongoing success, it appears Sano will be the only corner IF on the list. As I try to read into Nick's thinking, it must be that the combination of affordably acquiring a corner IF or having, say, Lewis move to 3B leaves Rooker (and Mauer) outside the top 20. Kepler also has some 1B experience, so perhaps that goes into it as well.

Article: Photographer Accuses Miguel Sano Of Assault
slash129 replied to John Bonnes's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
And don't forget to scroll down after reading the article so you can see the advert for swimsuit model casting .... The hypocrisy ... These media outlets don't actually care about the issues women are facing Also, these attacks on Nick Nelson and other TD staff (none of whom I know) are disgusting ... None of them were witnesses, accomplices or, from what I have read, ever made privy to physical evidence (e.g. seeing the bruising) ... I wish these threads would be locked permanently- 189 replies

Great article ... I enjoyed reading this comparison piece. Of note: Arrieta pitched about 120 innings at a 5.34 FIP in his age 25 season. Now that was for a 69 win Baltimore team that could afford more patience, and I'm sure were all hopeful that Twins will fare much better than that. But, I don't think it would be ridiculous to project Slegers to top that age 25 season, if he's assigned the innings.

This. As soon as I saw they were guys from the last draft, I figured they had been on the acquire radar of the current FO. Solid move using opportunity cost that is about to expire to add apparent desired depth to the system.

I don't know if it's necessarily a Minnesota thing. I think Mauer gettting snubbed at even being a finalist is the root cause for some lesser enthusiasm on Dozier's win. Fear of coming across as a hypocrite for saying, "WTF, Hosmer?" followed by "Yeah, Dozier!" is definitely a driver. If Mauer had even been a finalist, I very much doubt Dozier's defense would have been picked on the way it has in both the finalist thread and this thread.

Congratulations to Byron Buxton and Brian Dozier!! Now get out there an vote for Buxton to get that Platinum Glove! He definitely deserves it. I know the hot stove is cookin' and we're playing fantasy GM, but these awards give a little extension to what was a very fun Twins season.

Article: The 5 Best Pitching Gambles In Free Agency
slash129 replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I fear that Arrieta is going to be a classic case of paying for past performance ... All his numbers are trending the wrong way since his Cy Young and he'll be 32 before the season starts and likely wanting a 6 year deal .... Let one of the spend-happy, big market teams have that contract -

Hellickson on a 1-yr make good after signing someone like Cobb, Lynn or maybe even Chatwood wouldn't be a bad idea. Santana will be another year older. Berrios may still have some bumps along the way, although I wouldn't be surprised if he turns into a true #1. Gibson needs to show that he can repeat that second half. Mejia still has options and is far from proven. Gonsalves has yet to make his debut. Question marks? Yes 2012 ... Marquis, De Vries, Walters, Deduno, (insert other 5+ FIP starter) territory? Absolutely not No need to use resources on any high-risk, injury-comeback, Rich Harden reclamation project. Twins already have that project with Phil Hughes @ $13+M. Just re-sign Dillon Gee, if any of those other 4 names are what it comes down to. He was a good long relief option and can make a spot start. I also agree with the post above that states the time to go after that ace is at the trade deadline.
