  1. Hell, why don't they sign Chase Lambin again? Bring back Toby? Now BOTH Benson and Tosoni have to waste time in AA instead of AAA where they belong. Clete Thomas
  2. Clete Thomas is not ahead of anyone. What the hell are you talking about? This is a bizarro move when a guy finally shows some semblance of waking up this year and being healthy. CLETE THOMAS keeps causing problems for this organization. It's a joke. It's Joe Thurstonesque. He showed have never been signed in the first place and now he is taking at bats away from prospects and has been for several weeks.
  3. Mauer at 3B is a definite improvement in terms of value on that $23 million. If you all are talking about a C/3B/DH combo, that is all well and good with a healthy Justin Morneau playing 1B almost every day.
  4. It's been funny because they have been the best starters for the Twins yet they are truly 4-6 starting caliber pitchers. That's what they are and that is good if you have other good pitching before them. But I am fine with figuring out that part of the rotation this year, honestly. Some FA, Hendriks, Gibson, and Bromberg likely are involved in 2013 before those guys.
  5. One more (and it is coming) Jeff Gray blow-up and it MUST BE Slama time.
  6. Blackburn isn't going anywhere, so he takes up one of those spots. Hendriks will be fine and Diamond should be too. They are 3-4 and 4-5 starters, yes. Gibson is hopefully the guy to swing it somewhat and if Wimmers and Stuifbergen get healthy, they are in the mix too. And the Twins need to recognize that they must draft pitchers instead of toolsy HS outfielders, including HEALTHY 2013 versions of players like Gibson and Wimmers (both were expected to essentially be involved by 2013 back before everything went to hell).
  7. Why on earth is anyone talking about trading anyone for anything other than pitching? I certainly won't even think about a Span for some position player! Free agency is going to be the way to go for starting pitching, by the way. Just sayin . . . ok, since this is essentially another ridiculous trade Span thread, I am leaving.
  8. Pretty good start to this, though I know so little about most of the guys in EST so I have a hard time weighing players who haven't played in the organization at all or who have played very little. I wouldn't be surprised if Vargas had a great short year this year. It is really unfortunate about last season because he is a good hitter. Lance Ray is too low.
  9. Thyrlos, DeVries may have been up before Walters, but the timing of when they pitched was off two days, I believe. Anyway, I see DeVries as not 3 of x, but rather 2 of 3. That is, I think he, Walters, and eventually Manship or Swarzak (maybe interchangeable roles?) are vying for the last rotation spot at the end of the year. Assuming a Pavano trade, keeping Liriano where he belongs, and Blackburn coming back, I see the August-September rotation, as preparation for 2013 as: Hendriks Bromberg Diamond Blackburn (unfortunately, a ballsy move would be to say "take your $5.5 million next year to the bullpen") DeVries or Walters or Manship/Swarzak. This sets them up for one FA signing at the top, and filler at the bottom in preparation for Gibson. That's what I would do, anyway. What they will do . . .
  10. Haha, good lord who knows? Let's see: Hendriks, Manship, French, Thompson . . . .and maybe they will promote Bromberg or Hirshfeld?
  11. Oswalt is only going to pitch for a contending team, and he is likely to not be much above replacement anyway. Roy Oswalt and Drew Butera as pitcher leading the way in the forums the past day. Sheesh.
  12. For people citing bigger third basemen, you have to realize that none of them were/are transitioning to the position from catcher. There is a big difference even in how one's muscles are trained. The difference between Zimmerman, Rolen, and Mauer in that regard is obvious. Let's say Mauer moves to third and has a bit of a tough adjustment for sometime in the field. Maybe it also affects him at the plate . . . I for one would avoid even coming to TD so as to avoid the irrational pro-booing nonsense articles and the even worse irrational anti-Mauer (and/or his contract) threads from those who would start out saying "for $23 million, he should be able to simply move to any position the team needs" blah blah blah.
  13. Yeah, we could be looking at a Pavano (if he holds up!), Diamond, Walters, DeVries, Manship rotation at that point. And fine by me, honestly. Pavano is the only tradeable starter. I would rather have Blackburn shut it down and get healthy for next year when he is REALLY paid way too much. I imagine Hendriks will be up after 5 or so more starts at AAA.
  14. Yes, as he is hitting in Rochester right now. There is no way they are just going to throw him down there until the All-Star break.
  15. Third base is a much more difficult position than 1st base. Mauer could do it, I agree, but the Twins are not going to do that mid-season with Valencia coming back at some point.
  16. Yeah, very good player but a bad human.
  17. Duensing hasn't even begun to stretch out into starting capacity and it would be asinine to convert him back to a starter. I don't like Swarzak much, but I would take that route if it meant Slama would be FINALLY promoted.
  18. I would much rather keep Span and spend some money on 1-2 free agent starters in the offseason than trade their leadoff player for a pitching prospect.
  19. Yes about the Mauer stuff. Although he would probably be ok at the position if thrown there after a few weeks of practice, imagine the idiotic booing for every error . . . oh my god. You can't just say SSS or not! That's pretty relevant. Anyway, where are you getting the "middle of leadoff hitter" data? I am confused about how to find that on fangraphs, or are you getting that elsewhere?
  20. Furthermore, what defines "best player available"? Simply the highest ceiling? What about the most likely outcome, if we are in the business of making predictions about who will be the actual best player?
  21. Yeah, I think they need a Morneau, Willingham, Mauer, Doumit mix at DH. I wrote it all out and won't bore people with it by posting the lineups, but DHing Willingham twice a week, resting Willingham and Span once every other week, and giving one start in RF a week to Revere, gives him ample time. Plouffe plays maybe half and half at 3B/RF at the moment (Valencia situation pending). Mauer catches every other game, with Doumit catching the rest except for a Butera appearance once in awhile (less than every Pavano start!). Carroll and Casilla each have 1 or 2 days off a week, and Mastroianni and Komatsu each get one start in RF.
  22. Yeah there is something to be said about taking players--in such scenarios--who haven't merely been average the majority of their careers, but who have excelled and dealt with injuries. Zumaya didn't work, but Burton did. Now if they would just apply that to acquiring starting pitchers.
  23. Burton was good enough to be considered as a closer candidate for the Reds before he got hurt. Maybe that doesn't mean much in the era of the "proven closer" mentality, but I would guess that Burton just hit a blip whereas Gray is going to be more of the same now.
  24. I like Burton and dislike Gray. Why? Because one is good and the other is not. Burton's career stats are good when he is healthy. Jeff Gray has been pretty bad in his career, and his minor league numbers weren't much better. He should have never been given a major league contract in the first place. That the bullpen hasn't been a problem does not mean that it still can't be improved. They have to improve personnel where they can.
  25. Pretty much, yes. Doumit, Capps, and Pavano are almost sure to be traded (three prospects total?). Span too, I guess. Morneau and Blackburn have contracts that won't be wanted at all. Carroll will be retained for next year. Casilla and Valencia I want to do well for two months to be traded, yes. Maybe the Twins get 5 prospects out of this.
