  1. With regard to the "little things" stuff--yeah it is blown way out of proportion by the national media, and yet there seems to be something lost there in the last few years, but maybe we tend to go to the other extreme and think that the team isn't doing the little things right at all, when that is not the case? It still may be true that compared to the rest of MLB, the Twins do those "little things" (however defined) right more often than most?
  2. Precisely. Reading this article was infuriating.
  3. I think he is referring to "spending plenty" not simply pursuing starting pitching. I hope he is wrong. $20 million would be plenty enough.
  4. Great post. This is exactly correct. With regard to your last paragraph . . . Rod Barajas (in your blueprint . . . ) hasn't been too terrible either (though certainly on the decline) and at $2 million that wouldn't have been a bad outcome. Yet somehow he got $4 million . . . and probably no real future beyond this year. Also, add Chris Herrmann instead of Drew Butera and the situation only gets better.
  5. I have been ridiculed for thinking that FanGraphs "value" is useful at all, but it is at $10.6 million right now.
  6. This signing tells me that Doumit really likes it in Minnesota. It isn't unreasonable to think that he may have gotten a 2/$10 million or even 3/$12 million deal in the offseason from somebody else. I really like this signing. I didn't look at the details . . . is it $3.5/$3.5?
  7. Ok, so continue to trot him out there in situations where not being terrible would be helpful. It is HILARIOUS that a Twins fan claims that "not all 12 pitchers on the staff have to be great." Does one prefer good or average over great? How about below average over great? Again, another claim that it is "all OK" in the bullpen so that 0.5 win isn't relevant.
  8. In deference to vast majority judgment, I will let this go away. I will let the sub .400 OPS of Justin Morneau against lefties wander away into the stratosphere of Danny Valencia hatred (it is VALENCIA-that is how you spell it). I will let 2010 and 2011 concussions to have never happened. OOh, and I will say "who needs wrists when swinging a bat." Let's watch Morneau's trade value RISE as he continues to suck ROYALLY against lefties!!!!!
  9. Let's add 'em up here (and it is clear that this doesn't belong in this thread): 1. Swarzak, Gray, and now Manship kept beyond serviceability. 2. Chris Parmelee wasted on the MLB bench for some completely absurd reason. 3. Ben Revere not on the 25 man roster from the beginning (perhaps his AAA time helped him?). 4. Drew Butera vs. any other AAAA catchers. 5. Matt Carson instead of Mastro. 6. Slama--not injured if called up 7. Morneau not facing lefties. ETC. These things add up. This isn't addressing the SP issue, which everyone focuses on. Ignoring other wins available is not a good idea though. But maybe I am just crazy.
  10. What's the beef? Besides the fact that he isn't good? What else are you looking for here? That 33/12 K/BB ratio in 55 innings isn't an abomination. Except that it is. He wasn't good since 2007 in the minors. Again, another person poo-pooing a minor adjustment of some x number of wins (even .x . . . ) in order to defend the status quo. Swarzak is NOT a major league pitcher and it is rather alarming that people think he is.
  11. I pointed this out in the offseason, but whatever.
  12. Manship, Gray, and Swarzak need to be out of the organization. This is clear.
  13. Parmelee this year has been "Tosoni-ed." Strange use of two valuable prospects.
  14. Benson and Tosoni can fill in at 4 and 5, probably, but something's gotta give in the OF then. Maybe Bigley can move up to Rochester and they can see if the power this year is for real.
  15. I guess I just don't understand the expectations from Morneau right now. It feels like reality must be faced at some point. If he can be traded to some sucker team this year, that's fine, but if one thinks playing him against lefties and batting terribly is the way to increase his value, one is nuts. A proper use of Morneau right now and he is likely hitting .250 and who knows how other numbers are affected by time off. I have not looked at his days off and if they were against righties or lefties at all, but I imagine some have been against right-handed pitching since Gardenhire tends to not care about such things.
  16. Can everyone start spelling Twins players' names right?
  17. It seems like it took Oswaldo Arcia's promotion for the Rock Cats to get the top of the lineup correct FINALLY. Aaron Hicks Chris Herrmann Oswaldo Arcia Chris Colabello Evan Bigley How was that this difficult? On base guys ahead of power guys . . . sheesh. I like the result this is going to have on these five players (and maybe Romero batting sixth).
  18. 1. I am not a fan of Danny Valencia by any means but Trevor Plouffe was terrible to start the season as well, wasn't he? I don't really think the Twins should write him off at this point. 2. I find it almost ridiculous to think that Justin Morneau with $23 million left on his contract is going to be traded, especially with his current struggles and what appears to be some other injury (probably due to wear and tear of playing MORE THAN HE SHOULD). Look at his June numbers. 3. I fail to see how doing this negates the Twins future in any way, especially given 2 above. Valencia is not simply some terrible player. And he has been very good against lefties. Morneau is a fundamentally different player post July 2010. 4. It always strikes me as odd when people poo-poo moves that might mean 1 win in a season (though I am not sure this would only be worth 1 win). If one does that 5 times, that's 5 wins.
  19. I didn't even think of that, Thrylos. I guess I am not totally sure that messing around with Plouffe defensively and I would like to see Valencia do something more to contribute, but whatever. I still am not sure everyone is grasping the depths of the badness against lefties for Morneau.
  20. What part is overstated? Are people forgetting that prior to the beginning of this season, there were many of us who thought he might never really play again, or else something horrible will happen again soon. People also seem to forget the other injuries besides the concussions. And I suspect something else is bothering him right now.
  21. Also, players in their "prime" do not post .375ish OPS against any-handed pitchers in the past 165+ plate appearances against them.
  22. He's "only" 31 and returning from a career-threatening concussion (and a whole host of other injuries). That is what you should have stated. Now read that out loud and ask yourself if that is a player in his "prime." He also didn't "thump his noggin." He had his who the hell knows Nth concussion . . . then he re-aggravated that diving for a ball last year. One more concussion and it is over.
  23. Weird . . . one would have thought that moving Valencia to this role would also be much more about the future than simply about 2012! I guess that isn't the impression I gave most people. Anyway, at 6.5 games out, I don't really like seeing Morneau up there against lefties. I mean . . . my god look at the stats one more time. That's not even Butera-esque. And of course it is true that Valencia's numbers against lefties for his career are better than Morneau's for his career. "The guy is still in his prime, it isn't time yet to designate him to be a platoon player." -- how on earth is he in his prime!? It has shocked most people that he has performed even close to this well this season.
  24. How on earth do Morneau's 2011 and 2012 stats against lefties not point to "platoon"!? It wouldn't have to be a strict platoon if he has had success against a particular lefty, but talk about pissing money away . . . meanwhile, Valencia knowing his role is not to repeat 2010, but rather to hit lefties like he has before the limited time against them for the Twins this year . . . I don't really see the rabid disagreement here. I find it hard to believe that Valencia isn't a MLB-ready player against lefties.
  25. Ok, I will temper my pro-Dozier/anti-Casilla attitude a little bit. But A: Casilla is almost 3 years older and has had significant playing time given to him. The problem is that he either A: gets hurt, B: hits decent, but becomes a dunder-head plenty in the field, or C: performs well in the field, but hits poorly. Also, you make the arbitration statement as though a few million bucks is meaningless to this team, but clearly it is not given the 2012 payroll. I think the decision not to pay what Casilla will be due (about $2 million, correct?) next season has already been made, unless playing Carroll is meant to make Carroll trade-bait somehow this year (two-year deal makes that unlikely). And that is probably the correct decision if they go about replacing him on the roster next year with Pedro Florimon (only 6 months older than Dozier) for $450k or whatever. Trimming that kind of money twice (Burton?) can mean a $3 million difference in SP value. That all said, it might be best for Dozier to go back to Rochester until August or even September.
