  1. I cannot see Benson! If there is a candidate in question who needs more time playing every day it is undoubtedly him. And aside from drawing a nice amount of walks this spring, his offense has been below average. Put that together with the disaster that was last season, and I can't justify making Joe the 4th OF. Platoon with Parmelee is better, but we know what Gardy would likely think of that. Now that Colabello is down to Rochester, I would think that maybe it is going to be Hicks and Ramirez? Ramirez is a RH slugging option off the bench. Clement would be the 4th first basemen and hits from the wrong side of the plate. Maybe by May the Twins will have a 14-11 roster breakdown (one can always hope). Also, Ramirez could pinch hit for Parmelee against lefties late. If Mastro pinch runs for Willingham, the late inning OF defense of Mastro-Hicks-and Ramirez is not too shabby.
  2. Spideyo, you already have some good responses. I think "the book" is generally good. I would think of 1,2, and 4 as a team's best overall hitters, with the first spot going to the speed guy and the 4 spot going to the power guy. The third hitter should have power and maybe I differ with the book here, but I don't really opt against solo homers--I look at the most likely ways to get a run (and generally with 2 outs and no one on, but most efficient way to get a run is with a homer. The 5th hitter spot is hoping someone with a bit of average and doesn't homer or strike out. 6th could be another version of 3 (and 7 is important as Willihammer points out). That is why I really like this lineup: Hicks (doesn't totally fit immediately, no one else does at all either) Mauer (too much of an OBP machine to bat anywhere else) Willingham (more power, lower average) Morneau (power and could again hit .290+) Doumit (better all-around slugger with more doubles, bit lower K rate that Plouffe) Plouffe (Willingham-lite) Parmelee (career .365 OBP in the minors--maybe .340 is possible) Dozier (hopefully he can hit over .250) Carroll (I realize that Florimon is the guy here, but whatever--Carroll and his 2 million dollar option be damned)
  3. Seth, you have 11 sure-thing position players right now, so it's safe to say the two remaining spots go to two of the following: Hicks Butera Ramirez Boggs Colabello Clement You indicate that Butera and Hicks are the leading candidates, but if *neither of them* which two do you think have the advantage out of the remaining four?
  4. Rochester OF of Ramirez/Boggs loser, Benson, Arcia (Bigley, Thomas)
  5. I say stop because I don't think you are taking in the relevant particular situation that Morneau is in with his health. Last year was bound to start out problematic for him, but he did pick up a lot of steam and this offseason was "normal" for him. There's just zero reason to think that a healthy Morneau isn't going to be somewhat like the pre-2010 Morneau. He's older, so there will be some decline. It's not as though I am the only one who has pointed to Morneau's second half of the season as a significant improvement.
  6. I don't think of Pinto as being a starter. Neither one is going to be the primary catcher as long as Joe Mauer is around.
  7. I am messing up all over this thread. I didn't mean that the three of them would bring back three legit prospects. By some combo I basically meant that the three might bring back two such prospects. I don't see Morneau alone bringing back more than one. Maybe that one has a higher ceiling than any one player to be had for the other three, true. At the deadline, though, both Willingham and Doumit are likely to be quite appealing for playoff teams looking to fill out their rosters with viable hitters (think Texas, NY, Boston, LAA, Atlanta, and maybe St. Louis here). It could even mean a teams "fifth starter" like Worley.
  8. Further note: Hicks has a .379 career OBP and even in his weaker seasons he was above .350. That's damn impressive. Hicks at .360 and Mauer at .410 is a *remarkable* top of the lineup, especially when followed by Willingham, Morneau, Doumit, and Plouffe.
  9. Keep in mind that there is absolutely no legitimate way for Mauer not to be batting second this year. Anything else will point to Gardenhire being incompetent about his lineup. Hicks and Carroll are the only real contenders to adequately leadoff for the Twins. I guess it is *possible* that if Carroll is getting on base at the .345+ level as a starter, then maybe Mauer as the three-hitter makes sense? Anyway, I really like the idea of Willingham batting third because there are often 2 outs in that first inning and in such a circumstance the most likely way to score a run is by hitting a homer (instead of stringing two extra base hits or three singles together, etc.). I am really not sure why lineups aren't--for the most part--basically just OBP from top to bottom, but whatever. Note: Hicks might not start out with a good enough OBP, but it will happen eventually.
  10. For the record, I expect a minimum of .850 OPS from him this year if he remains healthy.
  11. First, AGAIN, I already said that I omitted an "if" right before that . But second, what isn't to be disputed is that you cannot make some general claim about ballplayers having hot streaks when this particular circumstance involves a series of injuries and in particular a bizarre one relating to concussions. The farther removed from that, the better the outcome. I believe he was injured again in September. Maybe I am wrong about that (you know, "day-to-day" nonsense from the Twins).
  12. BP may have updated this in the past few years, but I believe it was going into 2011 that there was an article about the amount of time spent in the minors by team. The Twins at that point were 200 plate appearances above the second slowest promoting team. That likely has been altered a bit with Revere (Parmelee still had a LOT of plate appearances in the minors). With pitchers I believe they were third or fourth slowest. There is no way that Santana-Rosario is the 2014 opening day MI, much less "if not earlier"--that is absurd. Santana still has much work to do and Rosario isn't even an adequate defensively second baseman at the moment. September 2014 is the earliest for both.
  13. But this isn't a normal player. This was someone who on opening day was doubting if he was capable of playing with his injuries. The entire offseason last year was cloudy for him. Pre-injury he was having a ridiculous 2010. He showed signs of a return while still dealing with injuries in the second half of the season (including, most importantly, September). I am not sure what is really to dispute here.
  14. I would offer it to him, but depending on that whole Napoli-Ortiz situation, I would be willing to bet that the Red Sox would throw some years at him. Victorino+ money.
  15. First, I omitted an "if" in there, so that's my bad. Second, are you two not aware of his numbers in July and August of last year? His OPS was .850 and he was finally starting to hit lefties even minimally at that time. He has had a "regular" offseason again, etc. etc. So stop.
  16. The Vikings managed to add another QB who sucks as much as Ponder: Matt Cassel.
  17. Deduno and DeVries are both equal to or better than Correia. For 1/9 the cost. Full stop.
  18. There are just a bunch of things wrong here. Sorry. Duensing is not going to be starting, you spelled Deduno wrong, Walters is a last resort this year, and Perez is not going to be remotely adequate at all even in AAA.
  19. In my view, the long term view is going to be: Morneau vs. Willingham, Parmelee, and Doumit. I say that because we are talking about 1B/DH here. Willingham's days in left field are numbered, Doumit is the primary DH, and Parmelee is the "heir apparent." Sano is coming within three years, and it is likely to be at 1B. Morneau could move to DH. It could mean, honestly, considering the trade return value between Morneau, on the one hand, and those other three, on the other hand. I would think that Willingham and Doumit could bring back big value at the deadline this year, and Parmelee can still be around at least into the offseason. I was all for trading Morneau, but he is recovered from these injuries and is dominant again. The Twins could trade the other three for SS, 3B, and SP in some combo. They are going to be replaceable in Arcia, Benson, Herrmann, and Colabello.
  20. That was a late-night oversight! You are right. An alternative would be to keep Hicks down for a month and platoon Boggs and Mastro.
  21. The thing is that there is no indication that the player at the very top: (Sano, Hicks, Arcia, Buxton, Rosario, and Kepler) are going to struggle and falter. They ALL look like legitimate MLBers in the future. So Mauer, 3B, and the middle infield are left).
  22. Here it goes: Hicks, CF Mauer, C Willingham, LF Morneau, 1B Doumit, DH Plouffe, 3B Parmelee, RF Dozier, 2B Florimon, SS Bench: Carroll, Escobar, Boggs, Ramirez/Colabello Note: I don't care about Dozier and Florimon at the bottom (Carroll will fill in), I like a Hicks-Mauer-Willingham first inning a great deal. Worley Pelfrey Hendriks Correia DeVries (Diamond DL) Pressley Slama Robertson Fien Duensing Burton Perkins (Swarzak DL, Guerra DL) I like this rotation with Diamond sliding in for DeVries, but with DeVries and Deduno knocking at the door. I like this bullpen with Watts, Pugh, Albers, and eventually Oliveros and Guerra waiting.
  23. 24. Dozier as a second baseman is going to lead to good things for him at the plate.
  25. Roenicke is a joke. Sorry. I am not sure why this team bothered when it has a TON of MR guys waiting in AA/AAA. Other than OF, the system is deepest in middle relief types so bringing in Roenicke and Wood is just stupid. It's even worse than Maloney and Gray. Watts and Pugh are real pitchers who might be as good as Roenicke and Wood now, but they have time to get better. I DO NOT understand why this organization continually buys joke pitchers when mid-level prospects can take their place. Correia, Roenicke, and Wood vs. DeVries/Deduno, Watts, and Pugh.
