  1. I think instead of "should Gardy go", the question that is more important is who is the best person to lead this team in the future? I think many people that would say Gardy hasn't been bad enough or does not deserve to be fired, still need to look at that second question and ponder. I don't believe he is the best guy out there.
  2. It is the little things and I get that we would be terrible either way. But I don't understand how playing Santana in center field is making this team better this year or next. How putting Pinto on the DH or bench is a wise move. If I saw logic applied to the lineup, see some platooning,, I would feel more comfortable with Gardy in the future.
  3. The last time the Twins had an external manager was 1985 (Ray Miller). That last time the Twins went outside for a GM was 1985 (Macphail). Now I understand that we have only had two GM's and coaches since then so it is a tad misleading, but I also don't think is a 100% lock that the most likely internal candidate does not get the job.
  4. Max is 30 years old, a Boras clients, and he just turned down 6/144. I just don't see the Twins going 7-8 years and $24-26M a year. I see a bidding war between the Tigers and Yankees. New Yorks rotation needs someone new.
  5. Regarding the draft pick, best case scenario I would believe is 3rd overall. Houston will get #2 because they did not sign Aiken and Texas will get #1. Regarding the coaches, what is the case for Gardy? That is the issue here, IMO. He was hung out to dry regarding his pitching staff. I give you that. But what does he bring to the table? I think he is behind the times and stubborn, and frankly holding the team back. The lack of platooning and playing guys at their actual position (Santana, Pinto, etc.), I believe are holding this team back.
  6. That is one of the three pieces to the hope strategy: 1 - Everyone that was bad will now be good. 2 - Guys that were good won't regress (Hughes and Gibson) 3 - Young guys that come up will be lights out from their first MLB start (Meyer, etc.)
  7. Yeah. I see a lot of thread hijacking and personal attacks to whomever defends Pelfrey in the rotation.
  8. You have more faith then I do. I can't find Smith's bio, but off memory I think it was very similar to Antony's. Think about it, the Twins would have to tell Antony he is not what they are looking for, our have to fire him outright. It is much easier to do the nice thing and give him the job.
  9. They should be able to do both and they should drop responding to Olbermann. I agree. But it seems like executives of the Twins do have more PR experience than they do player experience. Bill Smith was not a player evaluator. He was an operational guy. Assistant GM and acting GM when Ryan was out, Rob Antony. The Twins site lists him as: Baseball operations from 1995 to 2007. Media Relations 1988 to 1995. Seems like a red flag to me that the last GM and potentially the next GM have no experience in what they would be asked to do. http://m.twins.mlb.com/news/article/66054352/twins-announce-front-office-promotions
  10. The sad part is we know Pelfrey will be terrible. Yet we all know he will get 10 starts of 6.00 ERA + . I hope we have a new manager next year that will take the best five guys. He won't be one of them. This team is not going to be good enough to go 2-8 in those 10 games.
  11. When I was about 8, our baseball coach would stand behind the backshop and use an orange construction cone, flipped around like a megaphone. As the pitcher started the wind up, he would yell "coil", as the pitch came he would yell "uncoil". The Twins should just do that.
  12. The Twins FO should worry less about their perception, spinning poor results, and more about fielding a better team led by a competent manager. Examples: The rotation has been bottom 3 for three yeras in a row Our manager believes our lineup, which has produced the 5th most runs "needs to take pressure off our pitchers". Fix these issues and the people talking bad about you part will take care of itself.
  13. I agree. As easy as it is to sit here and list five guys and say we are good, we are 28th in the league in starter ERA. That has been the biggest issue over the last 3 years so fixing it would be a good thing. Signing a guy that is better than everyone else you have and forcing a competition and the weakest among them to AAA is never a bad thing.
  14. Yeah, we are 5th in all of baseball in runs scored. That is why we can't win games. Not the 28th rated rotation. When the manager has no idea what the problem is, it is time to go. http://mlb.mlb.com/stats/sortable.jsp#sectionType=st&elem=%5Bobject+Object%5D&tab_level=child&click_text=Sortable+Team+hitting&game_type='R'&season=2014&season_type=ANY&league_code='MLB'&statType=hitting&page=1&ts=1409934869951&sortColumn=r&sortOrder='desc'&extended=0
  15. Warning to Moderators. If Mike Pelfrey is on scholarship next year and receives the same token 10 starts he has over the last two years, I will be grouchy and receive warnings in the April to June 2015 timeframe. I can't help it, it is a problem. I am over Mike Pelfrey. Sorry in advance.
  16. I too hope that Arcia adjusts and he is very young. The down side is he doesn't and becomes a platoon player that demolishes righties. These do seem like relatively easy fixes and I find it encouraging that he has an OPS+ of 98 with these glaring holes. So if he does adapt he should be a fine player. He is hitting .218 right now. If he can raise that to .250-.260, take another 15 BB's a year. His slugging which is already pretty good would naturally rise. That OPS likely starts with an 8.
  17. Agreed. From a high school pitcher throwing 45 IP, taking a few years to get to 200 IP sounds like a wise call to me. The Wainwright example does not make much sense as it was pointed out. At the end of the day I don't think the Twins inning limits, "babying guys" or developing guys too early or too late plays a huge role in our 3 years of 90+ losses. I think talent is the big factor. We are looking at who is doing it right and they have more talent. Whether it is St. Louis or San Francisco, they have drafted better, not let key guys leave, and/or signed free agents. From my seat, the only real difference between how most teams have handled guys and how the Twins have would be Meyer, i think he would have been promoted over guys like Pino in most organizations and I don't think Danny Santana would be playing out of position in a losing year. But by and large these two moves don't impact the standings a ton this year.
  18. The sad part is the approach. They haven't signed the veterans blocking prospects. They have an extremely young team. So it would seem they are setting themselves up better AND winning at the same rate.
  19. If you see him warming up at Target field, get the heck out of there.
  20. I would not fault the Twins for not giving this Tomas guy a 7 year deal at $70M or whatever. His last year in Cuba, he had .290, .796 OPS. 6 HR, 21 BB, 46 K in 257 PA. Abreus last year .382, 1.270 OPS. 13 HR, 37 BB in 42 games. The year prior he had 35 HR in 87 games. The year before that, Abrue hit .453, 1.583 OPS (not a typo). 33 HR in 66 games. That was described as one of the best seasons in Cuban history. I am with you on firing Gardy and Anderson. Also think we need to clear guys like Parmelee, Colabello, etc. They are not regulars on a decent team. http://www.baseball-reference.com/bullpen/Jos%C3%A9_Abreu http://www.baseballamerica.com/international/power-hitting-yasmani-tomas-leaves-cuba/
  21. Burdi is going to be sick. He will be with the Twins next year. If you remove his first outing when he did not record an out and had 4 ER and 4 BB. He has 20.1 IP, 2 ER, 38 K, 13 H, and 6 BB. That is not fair.
  22. I think thinking Bentley but I did not see that one. Extravagent. Nothing but the best.
  23. I still have Meyer ahead of Berrios, but I have a strong bias for upside when it comes to prospects. Therefore, I can respect those that put Berrios ahead of Meyer. That case can be made. It is within a realm of possibility that they could both start next year in AAA and Meyer is 4.5 years older.
  24. I believe that organizations with better pitching either drafted better or signed players and that plays a role moreso than our development. Wainwright signed a 5 year, $97M deal. It is not clear to me that the Twins would have given that out. Matt Cain received a 6 year, $127M dollar deal. No way would have the Twins have given Lincedum a 2 year $37M dollar deal after he struggled for two years. Regarding the young prospects, Gibson had TJ. Meyer had shoulder issues. Garza was up pretty young. Liriano was up at 21. Santana was a late bloomer. I do think that other organizations would not sign #5 starters and stick with them at the rate the Twins do (Peflrey for example). That likely stalls when a guy like May or Meyer come up by a few months....but by and lare that is not the issue between the difference in skill between the Twins and other organizations.
