  1. In the Twins favor - 57 games against the likes of Cleveland, Kansas City and Chicago. Competitive but not juggernauts.
  2. Does having Nishioka as his double play partner in Rochester hurt Brian Dozier's defensive development? Does having to wait an second or two extra at 2B on the double play while Nishioka runs around his backhand and does a spin make Dozier more likely to be injured? Wouldn't it make more sense to pair Dozier with a "normal" fielder at 2B like Chang or Dinkelman? I have a bad feeling about this...
  3. I would be ecstatic if the Twins made it to the post season and lost to the Yankees this year.
  4. Other t-shirt options for this year (If we can get similar pictures): Plouffe is my Goof Blackie is my Lackey Casilla was my Idea Frankie Makes Me Cranky http://hall-fame.com/casilla.jpg
  5. Not sure the Twins are going the 3-catcher route. With Morneau DH-ing, Doumit will be the backup C and Parmelee makes the team, not Towles.
  6. Does an outfield of Willingham, Span, and Plouffe strike anyone as being an improvement defensively over last year? Willingham in left has the potential to make Delmon Young seem mercurial by comparison and Plouffe has only handled 30 more chances as an outfielder than I have. The pitching staff is going to have to be content with whatever defensive improvement Jamey Carroll provides on his lonesome* over last year's Nishioka/Plouffe/Casilla/Tolbert consipracy. *I estimate Carroll's impact to be a 20 run improvement based on last year's Total Zone Total Fielding Runs Above Average. Considering Carroll was 5 runs below average in a third of a season at SS for the Dodgers, how sad was our 2011 bunch? (-36 runs)
  7. It' a trick question. None of them are different. The only Twin who was different was Bernardo Brito.
  8. I think Gardy gets to see more of his minor leaguers than he'd like, actually...
  9. Drew Butera in 376 career at-bats: .178 .220 .261 4 HR Jason Marquis in 573 career at-bats: .197 .216 .283 5 HR Of course the flip-side is that Butera is probably a better pitcher than Marquis these days.
  10. Exactly. I think a bat like Parmelee's would be more valuable to the team than a third catcher. He can spell Morneau at 1B, DH, maybe even slip into RF for J-Willi from time to time.
  11. Here's a novel idea - don't keep a third catcher. What's the worst thing that can happen? You have to sacrifice the DH spot for a couple of at-bats in a game if Mauer gets hurt and Doumit moves to catcher? (Gosh - you could even pinch hit in that situation for the pitcher, couldn't you?). Does this one possibility really justify carrying a stiff on the roster for 162 games?
  12. With the Twins opening their season on a Friday afternoon a week into April, the Miracle, Rock Cats, and Red Wings will all have played their first games of the season the day before the Twins instead of starting the minor league schedule the typical few days later. I don't recall that happening before. What was the reasoning for the MLB schedule being pushed back? Minor League playoff considerations for the September call-ups?
  13. It's not like the Twins haven't had viable options at shortstop recently - their front office just kept booting serviceable shortstops like Bartlett and Hardy.
  14. I give a healthy Choo the nod as Willingham's slowness is a detriment in the outfield.
  15. I envy your optimism. Relief pitching is so hard to evaluate in one-inning increments especially if you get used to start those innings.
  16. The difference-making aspect of Revere's speed will be covering left field like a blanket and taking extra bases aggressively. Stolen bases are showy but not all that valuable in and of themselves.
  17. Do you remember when the Red Sox were offering us Jacoby Ellsbury or Jon Lester for Johan Santana and we wouldn't make the deal because we wanted both? (And ended up with Carlos Gomez, Deolis Gara, and Phil Humber?)
  18. Even in Delmon's 21 HR, 112 RBI "breakout" season of 2010, he ended up netting a WAR of a paltry 1.8 because he was, without a doubt, the worst defensive left fielder in Twins history. (Jason Repko in 124 plate appearances the same season put up a 1.6.) You could blame part of Delmon's woes on Michael Cuddyer and Jason Kubel because Delmon's lack of range would have been hidden better by the Twins in RF had it not already been fostering that less-than-fleet pair. That's why the Twins overtures to playing Plouffe in LF this year is frightening. Haven't they learned anything? Yes, Revere is overmatched in a lot of a-bats, but his range in LF is exactly what this team needs. If you want Ploufe's bat, then DH him.
  19. I'm sure one reason the Twins didn't venture into signing Japanese stars until the revenue boon from Target Field was simply the expense. While Nishioka's 3 million per year salary doesn't seem exorbitant for a player envisioned to be an everyday starter, (especially considering the Twins had just paid Nick Punto $4 million per year) the Twins additionally paid a $5.3 million dollar posting fee to his Chiba Lotte team for the rights to sign him. That makes the Twins lack of effort in fully vetting Nishioka all the more mystifying.
  20. Considering it's the same Twins training staff from last year, I'm predicting option 1.
  21. So AJ, who in camp at Ft. Myers would you pick as the player with the best skill set for winning the Hunger Games? (Rating them between 1 and 12 for their potential as in the book.)
  22. Two things are in the Twins favor. The AL Central offers 19 games each against KC, Cleveland, and Chicago as opposed to Boston, New York, or Tampa Bay if we played in the East. The other is the introduction of the 2nd wild card - as the Twins have shown an affinity for game #163.
  23. Casilla can slide to SS when Carroll doesn't play and Hughes then subs for Casilla at 2B. Hughes also spells Casilla at 2B when Alexi doesn't play. If Plouffe makes the team as an outfielder, the fact that he can play SS in a pinch gives more options. Carroll can also back up 2B if needed. No need for a pure 2B/SS backup like Nishioka. 6 possible combinations: SS-Carroll, 2b-Casilla; SS-Casilla, 2B-Hughes; SS-Carroll, 2B-Hughes; SS-Plouffe, 2B-Carroll; SS-Plouffe, 2B-Casilla; SS-Plouffe, 2b-Hughes.
  24. The change in K/9 rates reflects the change in being a reliever versus a starter more than anything else.Perkins low rates were years when he started (2008 & 2009: 33 starts) while his high rates were years when he pitched in relief. (2006, 2007, 2010, 2011: 1 start.) HOF reliever Rich Gossage's K/9 his last year as a starter (1976) was 5.4 but it improved 10.2 in 1977 when he became a reliever. Another HOF reliever, Dennis Eckersley, went from he low 6's to the high 8's upon his conversion in 1987.
  25. It's sort of the Ramos - Butera situation from a couple of years ago. Ramos, the better player, stays at AAA so he can play everyday while Butera gets to go to the show because he's presumably going to sit on the bench a lot. It's crazy, but if you were a catcher in the Twins system, you'd want to be the third best and not the second best. Maybe Butera is only pretending he can't hit so he can stay in the majors.
