Has Rocco lost the club house?
Hosken Bombo Disco replied to BiggestRoccoFan's topic in Minnesota Twins Talk
In this case, to show leadership and support the young guys. I may disagree that they need that but we’ve been told, over and over, that’s part of the job of the veterans. True, guys stay home to rehab all the time, but nothing is preventing them from requesting they go on a trip and take their rehab with them. Yes Correa may need to stay back and has an excellent reason to do so which may help the team later this season. Also I did hear the radio thing correctly. -
Has Rocco lost the club house?
Hosken Bombo Disco replied to BiggestRoccoFan's topic in Minnesota Twins Talk
Lexi Schweinert said on the radio today that Correa, Kepler, Buxton and Margot were all on the field this morning doing some running. Then I wondered if she meant Target Field, not Kauffman Stadium? Then I thought she probably meant jogging, not sprinting, because sprinting would be some legitimate news. (Pics or it didn't happen.) Foot, knee, hip and groin injuries do not prevent you from doing morning warmups, nor do they prevent you from flying charter. Atteberry or Perkins also spilled at one point that the team expected Buxton to be on the KC trip, but he wasn't. I don't know why they singled out Buxton. Did Rocco gave his team an ass chewing after the game today. If he did, I think he needed to wait until the team got back to the cities to include those four named above, who deserve it at least as much. That's my opinion on it. -
Actually, it sounded like Ober wanted to stay in the game. I was listening on the radio. It’s always hard to tell on the radio but everyone here and on the radio seems unanimous that Ober was in full control. When even Chief says to leave the starter in… 🙂 The radio announcers said Ober was standing in the dugout in the top of the 8th, with his glove on, watching the Twins finish their at bat. Like he was going to come out to pitch the bottom of the 8th. Even though all the coaches had already patted him on the back signalling he was done. Then when Duran came out for the bottom of the 8th, apparently Ober left the dugout and disappeared into the clubhouse. Rocco has been saying someone needs to step up. Well, sounds like Ober was willing to be that guy tonight. To finish this thing or die trying. A “jump on my back, boys” type of moment. Didn’t happen.

No, you shouldn’t say that. We have provided a little more leeway on this type of stuff lately but that could change at any moment, retroactively, without notice.

Well right— if you realize that it’s more of a promotion than a demotion. Also, have this gif of Mookie Betts bowling a 300 game.

I started by looking for Royce’s 80-20 scouting grades from 2017. These are proprietary but widely shared publicly. That said, I could not find his fielding ones and did not want to search forever. I’m fine with the judgment that Lewis has bad hands; I would estimate his grade for shortstop would then be 40 (50 being average). Can you find Lewis’s 2017 scouting grade for fielding and post it? actually @tony&rodney it’s not that big a deal. My well being doesn’t depend on knowing Royce Lewis’s scouting grades. 🙂 You are a good poster here and it doesn’t really matter if another poster (me) thinks you are coming completely out of left field on this. Peace

I will get back to you before then.

@Riverbrian you were ok with Polanco at shortstop but not Royce Lewis?

From an old bleacherreport article I dug up. Evaluators are still split on where Lewis will settle in defensively, but there's little question he has the tools to be an impact offensive player. As for the aforementioned defensive question, Baseball America offered this: “He played center field often on the summer showcase circuit preceding his senior year and showed plus range and flashes of advanced defensive instincts. He has the quick feet and plus arm strength required to play shortstop, though scouts aren't certain that he'll make the necessary adjustments as he continues to fill out and the speed of the game advances.” [BA] @Mike Sixel @tony&rodney @chpettit19

This is all secondary effects from making the huge bet on Carlos Correa as the shortstop of the future, instead of Lewis or Lee. A so-called “good problem to have” with too many position players is still a problem, and in this case, it’s becoming a bigger problem. Lewis was the #1 pick in 2017, he was announced as a shortstop that night if I am not mistaken, he played shortstop almost exclusively in the minors, suffered some setbacks along the way, but made it to the show and never gave up on himself. The Twins, however, did give up on him. Shame. What is this team’s vision? That is the bigger question. I think they have done ok though a little thin building around their big guys on the pitching staff (Lopez, Duran) but their infield plan is a mess.

The update I heard on the radio maybe a couple weeks ago was that Buxton felt great, was at 100%, except as he was decelerating after a sprint he would feel something in his hip as he came to a stop. No knee issue to report, no hamstring, no migraines, nothing except that little twinge in his hip when pulling up at the end of a hard run. Otherwise ready to go.

I think Royce would have gotten him at second, yes. I am fine disagreeing! It would have been a close play. Lots of plays are. I think you are right, that the runner slides in harder if Lee reacts, instead of pulling up. Instead of a throw, it needed to be a sideways pitch. I tried to find a gif but couldn’t, so here’s a video. Lewis was a little further away than Panik here but the pitch in this position saves time instead of squaring up to throw.

I have to disagree. I think a sharp sideways toss to second to the glove side, gets the runner and starts the dp. Especially if the runner is pulling up at second like he does there. Thrown balls travel faster than baserunners. The sad thing is if Vázquez fields the throw and applies the tag, he probably has time to throw to first and complete the double play anyway.

The funny thing is, either last year or during this years winning streak, I heard someone on the radio ask Rocco to explain the team’s success and these were were pretty much Rocco’s exact words. “Guys come to the park and know what is expected of them, and are able to settle into their roles.”

That ground ball to Lewis looked identical to the ground ball to Julien the other day. It doesn’t look like either Julien or Lewis are comfortable trying to pitch or flip the baseball sideways to the shortstop on that play. The ground ball to Lewis should have been a double play. Even so, Vázquez needs to catch that short hop. Also I don’t understand the obsession with contact plays with your runner on third, or constantly trying to cut the opposing runners down at home plate at all times. These are decisions from the dugout. If you get the easy outs there, the inning doesn’t spiral. Even on that first one, if you play the infield at medium depth, and Miranda fields it instead of Lee, it’s an easy play to first and it’s 2-0 with two outs and bases empty.

I think this is not as hypothetical as you are making it 🙂 One answer to this, from a similar thread last year, was, “to plan which night to drive down to the cities and take our kid to a game that we know Buxton will be in the lineup.”

Resetting Expectations for Carlos Correa
Hosken Bombo Disco replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
For Correa, I think they will use the Miami series as a “rehab” and if he can’t get through that, then they will know they can leave him off the postseason roster. The Baltimore series at the very end might work too if nothing is at stake. There is just too much to lose by putting Correa on the postseason roster cold, and then watching him crumple to the ground on national television suddenly, or what is more likely and less dramatic, need to be removed between innings. -
It looked like an “atom” ball, which are difficult to gauge, off the bat. The ones hit right at you. The higher the exit velocity, the less time to react. If Margot is standing five feet to either side, he sees the angle better and makes the catch.

Personally, I would have those two reversed. But that’s a matter of taste, a Coke, Pepsi thing. I listen to interviews, and I love Levine’s candor and detest Falvey’s shallow dismissiveness about everything. (Beat writers sound the same way.) “The Twins are great, everything is incredible, we got this.” Maybe Joe Pohald eats that **** up. Maybe Falvey shows a different side in private. If Levine is the one ultimately calling the shots on things like the Mahle trade or Gallo signing or pulling the trigger on other bigger dollar signings, well then Levine should get the pink slip. Either way, we will all be cheering together like last year i hope when the playoffs roll around. Baseball is too much fun in October.
