  1. I don't understand the idea of the Twins signing Ellsbury at all. Considering Buxton, Hicks, Arcia, Rosario, and maybe even Kepler in 3-4 years, outfield is not the weakness of this organization. The money it would take to sign Ellsbury would be much better served signing Starting Pitching or even a Shortstop IMO.
  2. What a shame. I love watching that guy pitch. Hope he is back to being himself sooner rather than later.
  3. I really don't see anything Arcia has done this year that has deserved much criticism when his age and production are taken into account. I'm extremely excited and pleased with how well he has played. Yes he is streaky, but he will become more and more consistent with experience.
  4. I really hope Hicks development wasn't permanently stunted with how he was handled this year because I still have hope that he can be a very valuable all around corner outfielder next to Buxton in a couple of years.
  5. Mauer is an elite hitter and his bat would play anywhere significantly above average, but I think it would be wise to keep him as high up on the defensive spectrum as possible. If I were in charge, I would try to use him at C about 75 times a year, 15-20 times at DH, and the rest at 3B or RF, where his outstanding arm and athleticism wouldn't go to waste. I think it would be a mistake to just move him to 1B while he is still this young. That should be for when he is 34+.
  6. Is he deserving? Probably--Will he win? Not a chance. As was mentioned earlier, he doesn't hit enough to win one and he is not well enough known around the league.
  7. I sincerely hope the Twins let Justin walk. Right now he is a serviceable 1B at best and comparable players can be found on the open market every offseason. Right now, Justin is 18th in WAR among 1B in 2012-13 at 1.2, sandwiched between Corey Hart and Garrett Jones. The Morneau that was an MVP in 06 and well on his way to another in 2010 isn't coming back. Guys don't have 3 pedestrian years in their late 20s and early 30s and just return to form in their 30s.
  8. The child in me that remembers Johan as the best pitcher on the planet for 4 years wants this to happen in the worst way. I wouldn't miss a Santana start. But, those days are gone.
  9. Those rankings are all true, but our team just isn't very good right now! I sure would hope a former MVP, even with his diminished skillset, could out-OPS the likes of RYan Doumit, Aaron Hicks, and Pedro Florimon among others.
  10. As much as I love Justin and have enjoyed his time here, I think you're grasping at straws when you say you think the concussion years are the small sample size and not indicative of what kind of player he is. The fact of it is, he is a below-average hitting (for his position) first baseman who really isn't all that young anymore. Unless you consider these past two years concussion years--years in which he has been considerably healthy, here is a rather large sample size saying he isn't your father's Justin Morneau. 2012 .267/.333/.440, 108 wRC+, 0.3 fWAR 2013 .267/.321/.431, 106 wRC+, 0.7 fWAR
  11. That I doubt, and that is a sentiment I disagree with because a lot of his value is found in being such a good defensive catcher while putting up the numbers he does. I do think he should be waned off catching as we go down the stretch each season going forward unless we are in a pennant race. That is, if this doesn't (God forbid) become a Morneau situation. As I read on twitter from one of the Twins bloggers (I forget which one), it's breath-holding time.
  12. I think this is a classic change of scenery scenario, and doubt he would have had the same success back here in MN. And let's not forget the possibility that he just didn't want to come back here any more and wanted a fresh start elsewhere.
  13. I might be in the minority, and even though I consider myself rather analytical in consuming baseball, I actually really like that Dougie was out there backing up his players. Not to compare the level of baseball I've played and continue to play and have coached to professionals in high-A, but there certainly is something to be said for letting your players know you have their backs. No I don't think it matters numbers-wise or statistically, but it does matter in the atmosphere of being a team.
  14. I wouldn't say that either, yet. If he keeps improving over the course of the final month and a half and keeps doing the same thing next season, then we have a legitimate starting 2B. As I keep saying, odds are this situation just works itself out. Rosario might bust. Dozier might be a mirage. If they both end up being as advertised, then we have a good problem on our hands, but I wouldn't make any moves based on trying to predict how either of these guys will progress in the next year.
  15. Everyone wants to crown Dozier the answer after about 3 good months. Don't get me wrong, I'm very excited about the progress he has made, but I don't think we need to worry about having a logjam at 2B just yet. I need to see more from Dozier before I proclaim him the 2B for the next 5 years, and I would need Rosario to be much more of a sure thing before I would trade a young, cheap good player who has 5 more years of team control just to make way for him. Odds are, this situation works itself out, and if not, then we have quite a valuable trade piece, but we aren't there yet.
  16. That's another good solution. He certainly is one of the guys in the mix with the Twins right now that serve absolutely no purpose further than this year, in which case means they should never be taking at bats away from guys who are.
  17. I know this move (optioning Colabello and keeping Ramirez) made by the Twins is rather inconsequential, but I find myself increasingly frustrated year by year with moves like this. I would so much rather DFA Ramirez and keep giving Colabello at bats to prove that he may be a part of the short term future. The rule of thumb I always ask myself about moves like this is "Is it possible that this player is on the next team to win the division?" For Colabello, the answer is probably not, but maybe. The answer for Ramirez is demonstrably "no."
  18. I agree that after 6 years of control, the Twins will know what they have in Sano, and yes hopefully the Twins buy up his team control years and a few free agency years as well, but the extra year of service time makes that contract they will sign Sano to one year longer, which is immensely valuable. On the flip side, the Twins aren't the Rays, and I don't know if I trust the FO to sign him to a deal like this, so I hope they take the conservative route with him, just in case they need that extra year of him before he hits free agency. 2020 Miguel Sano at age 27 for a full season is going to be worth a lot more than 20 games of 2014 Miguel Sano in his age 21 season.
  19. The "Twins might be a little better than we thought" thing is now happening for the 3rd time this year. The first 2 times, the team fell flat on its face. It's nice that we have been able to beat up on the White Sox and Astros over the past 10 days, but I don't think it means very much as far as how good of a team this is. I don't think we get to 75 wins--65 seems more likely to me. EDIT: I now notice the Twins have 53 wins, which is to say 65 would be a complete implosion. I should say 70 wins to me is more likely than 75 however.
  20. I've been a big fan of Morneau in his time here, but I don't think he will be on the next team that wins the division and competes for a World Series, so I think we should trade him for whatever we can get, and move on. I'd like to give Colabello or Parm consistent at bats than give them to Justin at this point.
  21. I really hope the Twins take a more conservative route with Sano. I wanted them to leave Hicks in AAA for a month in order to gain that extra year of control, which might not end up being worth a whole lot 6 years from now if it turns out he just can't hit. However for Sano, I think it will be very much in the Twins interests to hold him back in AAA a month or so as that extra year of Sano could be worth 20-30 million dollars down the road, as well as giving them an extra year to try and iron out a contract extension. I am very fearful they bring him up to open 2014 as the starting 3B.
  22. I love how well Dozier has hit since the beginning of June and I think he has been awesome defensively at 2B all season, but I need to see more of the same from hit at the plate than a couple months before I'm ready to say I think we should trade Rosario because we're set there for the forseeable future. I think the Twins should just let Dozier keep playing there as long as he is playing well, and if Rosario is knocking on the door, get him ML at bats in a creative way. If this Dozer is indeed for real and Rosario ends up panning out, playing time for both of them will be a good problem to have. I'm just not ready to say we have that problem just yet.
