  1. And some emotion! Ata boy! Need to play with swag. We need the old Fien back!
  2. 95 on the black... Come on Casey on the mound!
  3. Man, Yankees have a good line up...
  4. Man the Yankees play long games... No stats to back that up.
  5. 0-2 count, here comes the boom.
  6. Can you imagine the drama if this were a playoff game?
  7. So we're withing 3 of where you'd expect on each. I'd say we could improve on each!
  8. To be fair, your stats are assuming all teams have the same amount of 0-2 counts for and against. I wouldn't doubt if the Twins were also first (or last or whatever) in getting down 0-2. Also, I'm not confident our pitchers are frequently up 0-2. Perhaps 0-2 RBI percentage would be a better measure? Or are you saying that statisticians just see what they want to see? Also HICKS!!! Left handed! That's why the team hates platoons. You gotta learn sometime!
  9. That also makes them valuable to other organizations. The A's and to some extent the Yankees and Rays have done well doing that. It's a lot easier to do when you're already good. Myself, I'm worried about the depth of farm system. Assuming Kepler, Buxton, Sano, and Berrios are up next year, how many top prospects remain in our farm system? Why not make the effort to make the team better in the future if you have guys who can be replaced without too much pain?
  10. I'll explain my side. We have not only depth, but young depth in the outfield. We have no depth at catcher. We might not even have a suitable starter at C or SS, and still need an ace. If you have a better way of improving the roster, I'm all ears. Where we currently stand, and where I think we should go next season, I'm more interested in improving the 25 man vs. the 40 man. I'm more interested in making a deep playoff run vs. stockpiling guys of similar value. Kepler has had one tremendous year in AA. He seems to get it as a hitter, and isn't simply "toolsie" like Joe Benson was. Rosario, Hicks, Arcia have all shown real ability in stretches. I'm not sure if any shined the way Santana did last year. The team can't afford to take a step backward next year like Santana did this year. I think we can sign depth (like Hunter) cheaper and with less commitment than we can sign an upgrade at catcher, shortstop, or top of the rotation.
  11. If the Twins don't trade high on Hicks, Rosario, Kepler, or even Buxton we've really missed the boat. You don't sign Hunter to replace or hold back Buxton, Arcia, etc. etc.. You sign him to replace Shane Robinson. A poster seriously suggested that Robinson is a better player than Hunter. Shane Robinson. This is getting pretty out of hand. Hunter would be by far better than any bench option we could have had this year including Arcia and Vargas. Hunter is also a significantly better, more experienced, and more intangibled player than Shane Robinson. I know, there's no measurable for intangibles. Worst case scenario, Hunter has to start for awhile until we get a better option in. We've pretty much learned he can be good in stretches, but he's 40 and he wears down. If we rolled with Buxton, Hicks/Arcia, and Hunter in right for 2 months until Kepler was ready, I'd be cool with that. If we flip Rosario for a catcher, I'd be all in on that too. If we let Hunter retire a Royal while Shane Robinson dujor remains our bench buy... I'm not sure I'm cool with that. And I've defended Robinson pretty staunchly this year.
  12. What about Wimmers? He's a former #1. His K numbers have been solid. He seems to be making a nice transition to the bull pen, and now that I think about it, he may have been moved to the pen to limit his innings. He threw 83 innings last year, he's already at 102 this year. We didn't protect him last go round, and he's almost 27.
  13. Perfectly stated without bashing or diminishing one of the great Twins of the last 20 years. As I said, re-signing him would be a luxury for me. A measure of comfort. Who knows if he'd even be ok with that sort of role next year. I know Hunter has no trade value at all. I can think of a few young outfielders who do have trade value. If upgrading the front of the rotation or shortstop or catching situation requires losing an OF prospect, then, once again, I think you could do far worse than bringing back Hunter. I just hate the talk in absolutes. It screams of spite or personal passion replacing reason and logic. I'd rather see Hunter retire a Twin if he can handle taking a reduced role. If not, I think he still considers himself a Twins family member when he retires.
  14. I don't get the hating on Hunter. I really don't. What exactly has he done wrong since he's gotten here? He was signed as an insurance policy, and despite Rosario's success Hick's success, we STILL needed him. Anyone arguing for him not to be resigned next year would have a more credible position if they could admit that signing him this year was a straight up good if not great signing. It did not hurt the development of any players, and it probably furthered the development of others. The experience, professionalism, study habits, and leadership should benefit the team long after he retires. He's basically done everything we've asked of him. His biggest knock coming in was defense. Evidently he's been better than average defensively this year. His hitting has slumped, but he hasn't been any worse than Dozier. No one's clamoring to replace Dozier with Polanco next season because of a bad month. You could have far far worse options as a 4th outfielder than Torii Hunter. And if Hicks goes back to being Hicks and Rosario goes all Danny Santana as sophomore next season, you'll be glad we have him or wish we had him back. Wait, no you won't. Not if you can't appreciate the season he's had this year. And we can go back to Joe Mauer being the leader of the team. I would feel much more comfortable about our outfield next year if we re-signed Hunter.
  15. I was wrong about Hicks. I too thought he was a 4th outfielder. At least for this season, he's been far better. I wanted Santana to start over him in Center. So I was way wrong about Santana who is swinging much like Hicks used to swing (poorly) but without the ability to realize he's over-matched and try to draw walks. I was wrong about Pelfrey, then wrong again about Pelfrey when I changed my mind about Pelfrey. I said Pelfrey was horrible and not worthy of even a spot in the pen. Turns out he was at least worthy of that thanks to a new found splitter. Then I said he was good and perhaps better than what he was showing because his K numbers were lower than they should have been. They weren't. He's bad. Then occasionally good. But not good enough to make me right about my second prediction, and not horrible enough for me to be right about my first one. I'll go ahead and predict we'll re-sign Pelfrey after the season and hope to God I can make it 0-3 on Pelfrey predictions.
  16. Baseball mostly... I'm assuming we'll be in a better place in the universe since you know, less racist mascot and all.
  17. Wow, I think gardy wrote "never change" in Tonkin's 2014 September call up year book last year, and Mike took it to heart...
  18. Straight and true compared to hicks in the 2nd.
  19. Will the Indians be better than us next year?
  20. That ball is seriously carrying in this humidity, or so say rosario and hicks' agents...
  21. Must have read the "mauer retirement/bench thread". Nice to see.
  22. Maybe the first time I've seen Mauer hit with a stiff front leg.
  23. I think Terry Ryan really deserves some blame for the initial collapse, but he also deserves credit for the relative rebound. I think he took it pretty hard when we traded away Castillo and it deflated the team. This was back when they had the old graded FA system. We would have received a compensatory draft pick probably better than the prospects we received in the deal. He also knew that he'd left us in impossible positions with Hunter, Nathan, and especially Santana. He pawned off the fall-out of the mismanagement on Smith. Smith made things worse. Ryan has since gone back to what initially made him successful: shrewd management of young talent and low-level FA signings. He also seems to be embracing the things that led to his team's collapse, ie not taking every opportunity to add talent to the roster. When our draft picks are in the 20's instead of 1-5, it is less likely we'll be able to consistently replace the talent that leaves with in-house options.
