  1. The Pujols example for taking less money doesn't really hold water. Miami doesn't offer no trade clauses in their contracts (for reasons obvious from last season's fire sale) and "the machine" made it known he wanted a full no trade clause with whomever he was signing with. So if Miami offers him that same contract with a no trade clause we might not be bringing him up as an outlier from the most money FA hypothesis.
  2. I think most rival GMs should remain skeptical whether the asking price is worth Stanton. His strikeout and batting average have been noted in this thread but no one has brought up his injury history. He has had injury concerns ever since he has been called up including this year. How much is the huge power bat worth with that combination of flaws?
  3. The only way for the Twins to get back to their winning ways is to go out and SIGN good quality starting pitching. They have a few arms getting close in the minor leagues but there is no guarantee they succeed. I think they need to sign a quality major league bat this offseason for 2-3 years who can play 1B or MI (Morneau's at bats) unless the FO thinks Parmelee and Colabello are the short term answer at 1st.. I don't see it as of now. If you look at the Twins Achilles heel the last two years it has been pitching. Ryan is attempting to build a core through the minor leagues via drafts and trades but now he needs to begin assembling the extra pieces that are needed from outside the organization. All this is easier said than done obviously.
  4. I think part of the reason for the numbers trending towards a "hitters park" in the last two seasons largely is a result of the poor starting rotation the Twins have marched onto the field. With that said, I don't think Target Field is as big of a pitchers park as everyone thought in the first 2 seasons. I think it will eventually end up being in the neutral area with a slight edge towards being a pitchers park.
  5. I see. Yeah if he is traded I would expect the return would be quite good since the Twins aren't actively trying to move him as they are with Morneau. My guess would be a top 50 prospect or possibly a top 100 pitcher plus another in the top 150 with upside. It would be different if they were dumping payroll (they aren't) or if he was in the last year of a deal (he's not).
  6. Comparing an elite hitter to an elite closer is apples and oranges. There are very few elite 2B players and for the most part all the elite guys will likely be elite guys in the foreseeable future. If you look at all the closers from 3 years ago and compare them to the closers today there are likely only 4-5 who even still have a job closing today and of those maybe 3 would be considered elite. But I don't see a team offering enough for the FO to pull the trigger on a trade for Perkins. He offers too much value for the contract currently. Note that I didn't actually look up #s from my example above but I have looked at it in the past and the turnover at closer is crazy high.
  7. I wouldn't throw in the towel on Worley and Hendriks yet. They are both relatively young pitchers yet and have time to turn it around. If one of these guys are able to figure it out and pitch effective enough to cover the 4 or 5 spot in the rotation for the next 3 years I would be ecstatic!
  8. 1. Plouffe has a combined 13 innings at 1st base in his career. 2. Sano hasn't even proved he can hit AA pitching yet. I'm sure Plouffe could transition over to first base with some time to work on his footwork but that isn't my main problem. Let Sano develop. Once he shows he can consistently hit AA pitching then we can discuss whether he deserves a September call up. I am guessing this doesn't happen this year but I could see him getting time in the AFL.
  9. With Punto doing inappropriate things to Gardy with his bobblyhead! (I'll give myself a warning for this vulgar comment but just couldn't resist hitting send)
  10. This sums it up right here: "They do not often discuss the alternatives. That is, playing scared, not taking chances, is no way to run a franchise. At some point in the life of every baseball team, there's a time to go all in for that season, to stop worrying about collecting prospects and to try to win now. Sure, trades come with risks, but that's life."
  11. Would you consider trading Morneau for a competitive balance pick to be a fair trade, not enough of a return, or not enough Morneau?
  12. Fair enough. If he doesn't make a splash this offseason I will be in that boat with you in regards to your outlook on TR's future behavior. For me the reason I still have hope is because of the overall quality of available pitching last year which IMO led to him making the trades with Span and Revere for quality prospects. I am really hoping I don't have to start ripping TR too!
  13. Gotcha. I don't have a specific number as none of us can accurately know what TR is thinking. But I would expect the Twins will have roughly 40 million available to work with (with the expectation of a maximum payroll of 90-100 million based on current revenue). I have trouble blaming TR for not fixing the rotation overnight when there weren't any viable options IMO. I also think it would be wise that until I see what TR does with BOTH an expanded checkbook and a contending team a person shouldn't just assume he will treat free agency as he did when he was the GM of a small market team trying to put together a roster often in the 60-80 million range.
  14. We have beaten this horse to death in other threads. I think a majority of people on here will agree to these facts: 1. The Twins had less than 1% chance of getting Grienke or A. Sanchez without offering a Mets/Santana type deal which obviously would never happen for said pitchers 2. The rest of the FA class who got multiple year deals have not provided much value on the field this year (based on WAR numbers for arguments sake) What's the point to spend money on long term contracts during a poor quality FA period when there are better FA classes coming up in the coming years?
  15. 1. I was referring to the two free agent Cubans who aren't part of the international pool. Which was what several people continued to bring up in why the Twins aren't going after Gonzalez. 2. I think with all the money coming off the books this offseason, possibly more with trades that may be made in the next month, TR will have the money to pursue middle of the rotation pitching (which would be our ace currently). I think TR has an idea of how he is going to put together the next winning Twins team and I think next year will be the time to begin putting together some veteran pieces. I wouldn't bet any money on TR actually doing this but mainly the available money for FA is the reason I could see it happening next offseason.
  16. In regards to Ryan, I think last year was simply saying what he had to say for public relations purposes while he had no intention of spending money on a lackluster group of pitchers. Looking at the possible free agents this year there are some legitimate options out there worth taking a look at. But as the consensus is on the boards, I am going to believe it when TR actually signs a quality SP as apposed to taking his word on it. There are still several top prospects available. Also, our scouting department may have a different outlook on some of these top prospects compared to other teams scouts. Most of these are 16 year old kids and I can imagine not everyone sees them equal in value.
  17. TR has repeatedly stated that the Twins will use ALL of their international money. It wouldn't surprise me if they aren't interested in players with paperwork issues similar to Sano's situation when he was signed or as others have said there are some top prospects who can't sign until August. For me as long as they spend money on legitimate ML pitching this offseason I am okay with not going after the Cubans. If TR goes another year similar to last offseason I will take serious issue with what he is doing. Sign at least one quality, above average, ML caliber pitcher to a 3-4 year deal to anchor the rotation as we add pieces from the minors. Given the Twins current payroll, overpaying a pitcher should not be an issue to get him into a Twins uniform.
  18. I think the use of the phrase "overpay" is being thrown out too often. Just because the price of FA players is high doesn't mean a team overpays. It is simply the market value at the given time. The price of FA is going to only increase in the next couple years with the increased revenue sharing coming in from LA/NY network money being shared. I think when a team overpays would be when they sign a FA for 2 more years at a couple million higher price than any other team was willing to pay. It's hard to say a team overpaid without knowing what offers were out there.
  19. Likely how they would have value is as a throw in if we are getting a prospect from a team and they want a minor league pitcher in return to fill their system.
  20. Perhaps this could be a reason to try and make a Morneau/Hughes trade. Prevent the Yankees from making a QA and having a chance to extend him while helping fill in one of the many holes in the rotation for the last two months of the season. Again this trade is unlikely but I wouldn't mind a SP on an expiring contract for Morneau in lieu of a prospect that likely won't be anything better than a future bullpen arm/utility infielder.
  21. I find item C very very offensive. Is there a bylaw to outlaw TS lyrics in the forums? Could this be included in the trolling examples?
  22. Just to clarify, I wasn't trying to argue that the drafts were good. I think the first round picks were successful for where they drafted. After that not so much. I just wanted to point out the fact that after the top 30-50 players taken, the odds of getting a future MLB player decreases exponentially.
  23. The last few years are comparing apples to oranges **. Each draft has different depth. The Twins have done pretty good drafting past their first pick the last few years too. Edit: ** with respect to the 2000's drafts.
  24. I agree with this. Most people with issues with the Twins draft is in the rounds after 1. However, I don't know if people realize how big of a crap shoot these picks really are. If you go back and look at the draft recaps that were posted both at Twins Daily and originally at Kevin Slowey was Framed, after round 1 the number of successful picks that result in MLB players are few and far between. It is hard to criticize the FO for not picking a player that was passed on 247 times only to develop into a formidable ML player. There are many of these players who come out of nowhere but there are a lot more that teams are correct to pass on because they don't develop past organizational fillers.
  25. It also says the Yankees are trying to move Hughes but the Twins aren't interested in an expiring contract. This is unlikely but... trading for Hughes if the Twins are able to set up a pretrade contract extension in order to trade Morneau for him would be a great move. I know that scenario is never going to happen but I can dream. This return would be much greater than any prospect we are likely to get for Morneau.
