One thing on Abrams that teams trying to trade with SD have going for them, is the Padres have Fernando Tatis Jr, Jake Cronenworth, and Manny Machado in their infield. Is kind of a Yoan Moncada situation for me. Nobody thought he could be traded when he was, either. Twins maybe have to throw in something more than Berrios for him, but SD is trying to win a WS and they have the existing core for that already. Abrams, as highly rated as he is, isn't going to push them over.

I'd describe this as their minor league catcher depth being pretty lacking. But Garver isn't a FA until 2024, and Jeffers/Rortvedt/Astudillo are still all pre-arbitration. They're fine at catcher for the next 3+ years at the MLB level and Garver is proving to be an elite hitter at the position. For fun, trade chatter around Berrios with the Padres has Luis Campusano as a potential fit for part of the return (with Mackenzie Gore - who has had the yips for over a year now). Does he interest you at catcher if they were to deal Berrios? Personally, I'd want C.J. Abrams in a return from SD (that might be about all they get then, though) and don't think they need another catcher ready for the bigs, but Campusano is highly rated.

The hits just kept on coming for Minnesota Twins affiliates on the night, as the top two teams combined for 39 hits and 34 runs in a pair of blowout victories. A top prospect for another team also jacked a couple of home runs to stay hot since his return to the lineup. After the MLB team’s disappointing collapse against Detroit, it will be a breath of fresh air to read about all the hits instead of hurts, so hold on and keep reading to find out just how many your favorite Twins prospects racked up on Tuesday night! TRANSACTIONS The Minnesota Twins recalled RHP Beau Burrows from St. Paul in advance of their game with the Detroit Tigers LHP Lewis Thorpe was sent to the FCL Twins on a rehab assignment from the Saints. After signing with the Twins on July 20th, LHP Chris Nunn was assigned to the Wichita Wind Surge. The Wind Surge also received LHP Sean Gilmartin from the Complex. The Cedar Rapids Kernels released IF Yeltsin Encarnacion. The Twins released RHP Donny Breek from the FCL Twins. SAINTS SENTINEL Indianapolis 1, St. Paul 16 Box Score This one was seemingly over before the first inning finished as the Saints sent 11 men to plate in the opening inning, and eight of them crossed home plate. Rob Refsnyder and Jimmy Kerrigan did the bulk of that damage with home runs, while Jose Miranda and Drew Maggi added doubles in the onslaught. They continued the run parade in the second inning, tacking on five more thanks to a 2-run double from Ben Rortvedt, an RBI single from JT Riddle, and the second home run of the game from Kerrigan. Starting pitcher Chandler Shepherd handled it from there, holding Indianapolis to just two hits and one walk in seven innings pitched. He struck out four and picked up his fifth win of the season. Robinson Leyer allowed the only Indianapolis run in the eighth on a solo homer and struck out one. Ian Gibaut finished off the blowout with a scoreless ninth, walking one and striking out one. Six of the nine hitters in the St. Paul lineup collected multiple hits, with Miranda (3-for-5, 2 R, 2B) and Kerrigan (3-for-4, 2 R, 2 HR, 5 RBI) leading the way with three each. Maggi had two doubles on the game, and Mark Contreras continued his strong July (.957 OPS in 16 games) with a double and scored three runs. In addition to the sixteen total hits as a team, all nine batters scored at least one run, and they combined to go 8-for-14 with runners in scoring position and left only three men on base for the game. WIND SURGE WISDOM Wichita 18, NW Arkansas 8 Box Score In a box score quirk I don’t recall seeing very often, if ever, the Wind Surge managed to score at least one run in every single inning of this game, including five of them with a crooked number. That resulted in another blowout victory as they improved to 42-31 on the season. Like their older brothers in triple-A, each hitter in the lineup scored at least one run, though Wichita one-upped their peers with seven hitters collecting multiple hits on the game. They were led by Spencer Steer who racked up five hits on the night, including three doubles and a triple. He also scored four runs and drove in four more. Chris Williams wasn’t that far behind, finishing 4-for-6 with a double, home run, two runs scored, and five RBI. B.J. Boyd (3-for-6, R, 2B, 4 RBI) and Leobaldo Cabrera (3-for-6, 3 R, HR, RBI, K) had three hits on the night as well. Trey Cabbage also hit his sixth home run with Wichita and 15th overall this season. With 23 hits as a team, you have to open the box score link above to appreciate how dominant the Wind Surge lineup was throughout this game. Chris Vallimont made the start and wasn’t as sharp as you’d like in such a game, but you don’t need to be great when your offense piles up runs as they did. He went four innings and allowed five runs (four earned) on five hits and three walks while racking up six strikeouts. Cole Sands came on for the fifth and went the next three innings, allowing two runs on two hits and a walk, striking out four. The recently-signed Chris Nunn made his organizational debut and went 1 2/3 innings. He worked around a walk with a pair of strikeouts for a scoreless eighth inning, but after three singles in the ninth, he was replaced by Joe Kuzia for the final out, a strikeout to punctuate the dominant win. KERNELS NUGGETS Cedar Rapids 5, Wisconsin 2 Box Score Righthanded pitcher Louie Varland made his third start with the Kernels since his promotion and kept his ERA at a clean 0.00 in the "Midwest League" with another five strong innings. He allowed three hits, walked three, and struck out three while throwing 80 pitches (49 for strikes). While he was on the mound the Cedar Rapids lineup built him a 4-0 lead, mainly due to the loud bats of Edouard Julien and Matt Wallner, who each launched a home run in their three-run third inning. After Varland’s exit Breckin Williams (2/3 IP, 2 H, ER, 2 BB, 2 K) and Erik Manoah Jr. (1 1/3 IP, ER, BB, 2 K) let the Timber Rattlers close the gap to 4-2, but Zach Featherstone righted the ship with two scoreless innings to close out the game. He walked two, struck out five, and picked up his fifth save of the season in the process. Wallner added an insurance run in the top of the eighth with his second home run of the game that made the final score of 5-2. Since his return from the injured list, Wallner has gone 8-for-22 (.363) with four home runs in six games, and his OPS is up to 1.103 on the season with the Kernels. In addition to Wallner, Cedar Rapids got multiple hits from Jair Camargo (2-for-4, K) and Michael Helman (2-for-4, R, SB) in the victory. MUSSEL MATTERS Fort Myers 7, Clearwater 1 Box Score The Mighty Mussels, like the Saints above, got the scoring started early in this one, putting up three runs in each of the first and second innings. In the first inning, it was a three-run blast from Will Holland, his sixth of the year, that got them going. In the second it was an RBI single from Ruben Santana, a sac fly off the bat of Misael Urbina, and a solo homer from Keoni Cavaco to account for the early 6-0 lead. That was more than enough for the Fort Myers pitching staff, as starter Sawyer Gipson-Long held the Clearwater lineup to just three hits in seven innings. His lone run allowed was unearned, and he struck out nine compared to just one walk on the night. At one point he retired 11 men in a row and also finished his outing strong, striking out the last two hitters he faced. Burnsville, MN native Aaron Rozek finished the final two innings by retiring all six hitters he faced, including one strikeout, to seal the victory. The Mussels got multiple hits in the game from Holland (2-for-5, R, HR, 3 RBI, 2 K) and Santana (2-for-4, R, 2B, RBI, K) COMPLEX CHRONICLES FCL Orioles Black 7, FCL Twins 6 Box Score The FCL Twins fought back from a 7-0 deficit but fell short, leaving the tying run 90-feet away in the bottom of the ninth. This was after Kala’i Rosario delivered a two-RBI triple in the bottom of the ninth that closed the score to 7-6 with just one out. LaRon Smith got the Twins on the board in the bottom of the fourth with a two-run blast, his fourth of the season. Alexander Pena delivered a two-run double in the seventh that made the score 7-4. Smith (2-for-4, R, HR, 2 RBI, BB, K, SB), Pena (2-for-4, R, 2B, 2 RBI, BB, K), and Rubel Cespedes (2-for-2, 2 R, BB, SB) each collected two hits on the game. Lewis Thorpe was sent to the FCL Twins on a rehab assignment and started this one. He finished 2 2/3 innings, allowing two earned runs on three hits while striking out three. Wilker Reyes surrendered the bulk of the damage in his 3 1/3 innings, being charged with five runs on seven hits and three walks. He struck out three and recovered from the initial barrage to hold the Orioles scoreless in the fifth and sixth innings. Ramon Pineda delivered a scoreless seventh inning, and Samuel Perez finished the game for the Twins with a pair of one-two-three innings, including three K’s in the eighth. I'd echo the same. Was watching this game as I wrote the report. Gets lots of swings and misses with his fastball, noticeably inside the zone ones as well. Don't think it was his changeup but also had a pitch with good horizontal run (not any drop) that he stole strikes with. CB/SL more of a true 12/6 curve than a wipeout pitch, but he knows where to put it to get strikes and swings/K's. Locates everything well. At this point I'd be surprised if he doesn't debut with the Twins at some point this year as well.

The story heading into Tuesday’s minor league slate of games, was the recent pitching of top prospect Jordan Balazovic for the Wichita Wind Surge. You could say he was quite good again, but his continued dominance is not the only thing worth discussing on this night as three other affiliates came back late to win, one in particularly-improbable fashion. TRANSACTIONS The Minnesota Twins returned Griffin Jax back to St. Paul and assigned outfielders Rob Refsnyder and Kyle Garlick to the Saints on a rehab assignments. With the Kernels OF Matt Wallner was activated from the injured list and served as the DH, batting third in the lineup. RHP Landon Leach was assigned to Fort Myers from the FCL Twins. The Twins have signed RHP Eiker Huizi to a minor league contract. He had signed with the Mets in 2017 and spent two seasons pitching in the DSL. The Mets released him in October of 2020. The Venezuela native is 20 years old. SAINTS SENTINEL St. Paul 6, Omaha 4 Box Score The Saints and Storm Chasers had an early tilt, and it was a good one that was sent to extra innings to kick off this week’s six-game series. Chandler Shepherd got the start for St. Paul and went five solid innings, allowing only one run on six hits and two walks while punching out six. Omaha got to reliever Yennier Cano in his two innings. He allowed three earned runs on six hits and struck out three. Kyle Barraclough delivered a scoreless eighth inning. He walked the first two batters of the ninth inning, but Andrew Vasquez came on and gave the Saints lineup the chance they were looking for. He got a fielder's choice, a strikeout and a ground out to send the game to extra innings. Down 4-3 with two outs in the ninth, Drew Maggi stepped to the plate and was not going to let his team lose. He clubbed his 10th home run of the season to tie the game at four and send it to extra innings. After Vasquez held the home team in check with a scoreless ninth, Jose Miranda was quick to give St. Paul the lead with a one-out double in the tenth to score the extra runner. The rehabbing Kyle Garlick added an RBI single later in the inning to give the Saints the 6-4 lead. Ian Hamilton shut down the Storm Chasers in the bottom half, walking one and striking out two in the process of recording his second save. In the top of the first inning, Rob Refsnyder, also rehabbing with the Saints, hit a home run to right center. Jose Miranda (2-for-5, 2 R, 2B, RBI, K) and Jake Cave (3-for-4, 2B, 2 RBI, BB, K) had multiple hits. WIND SURGE WISDOM Wichita 4, Arkansas 1 Box Score On the mound for Wichita on Tuesday was top pitching prospect Jordan Balazovic who was carrying a three-start and 18 2/3 inning scoreless streak into the game. He was also named the AA-Central Pitcher of the Week after a seven inning, one hit and 11 K outing in his last start. You could say he is locked in at this point. Balazovic extended his scoreless streak to 25 2/3 innings with another fantastic outing, picking up his third win of the season. He was efficient and dominant again, throwing 89 pitches, 63 for strikes (70.8%) to complete another seven inning, no-run start. He allowed just four hits and one walk while striking out six Arkansas hitters. During his streak, he has allowed just 10 hits and four walks and has racked up 30 strikeouts. It should not be long until he is pitching with the St. Paul Saints. His offense, and specifically Trey Cabbage, gave him more than enough run support in building a 4-0 lead heading to the ninth. Cabbage did most of that damage with an RBI double in the third inning, and then insurance in the eighth with an absolutely mammoth two-run home run. The Arkansas broadcast remarked that it left his bat at 114 MPH and travelled 461 feet. “Goodness…” was an apt description, play-by-play guy. Reliever Zach Neff came on for the eighth inning and worked around a single and walk for a scoreless frame, but was not able to keep the Travelers off the board in the ninth. In his 1 1/3 innings Neff was charged with one run on two hits and two walks. He struck out one. Jordan Gore was summoned for the final two outs, and though he gave up a single that scored a run, got a strikeout and a long fly ball for the third out to pick up his first save with the Wind Surge. Roy Morales (3-for-5, 2B, 3B, RBI) and D.J. Burt (2-for-4, 2B, K) also collected multiple hits in the win. KERNELS NUGGETS Beloit 3, Cedar Rapids 4 Box Score The Snappers and Kernels traded leads a few times throughout this one, but neither team was able to break through for a big inning. Tyler Beck made the start for Cedar Rapids and scattered eight hits over his five innings, allowing just two runs along with striking out seven. Derek Molina (2 IP, H, 4 K), Melvi Acosta (1 1/3 IP, H, R, 3 K), and Zach Featherstone combined for four innings of one run ball, striking out nine and walking none. That was enough to keep the Kernels in the driver’s seat after the Snappers tied it at three in the top of the ninth. They took little time to end it in the bottom half, as Jair Camargo led off the inning with a bunt single, then Michael Helman drove in pinch runner Daniel Ozoria all the way from first with a walk-off double. Helman said humbly after the game that he just wanted to move the runner along. "I got the opportunity to at least try to move the runner and put a guy in scoring position. It somehow kept the ball fair down the line. Luckily Ozoria is fast." Matt Wallner made his return from the injured list as the designated hitter. In his second at-bat he clubbed his fifth home run of the season (has played only 18 games). Camargo finished 2-for-4 with his 13th home run and two RBI. DeShawn Keirsey collected his third triple of the year and stole two bases. MUSSEL MATTERS Daytona 7, Fort Myers 8 Box Score The Mighty Mussels fell behind 7-2 heading into the bottom of the eighth, but with some help from the Tortugas bullpen and on brand for Twins affiliates on the day, were able to come all the way back and steal this one on Tuesday night. Aaron Rozek made the start for Fort Myers and went seven innings. He allowed five runs (four earned) on eight hits but also struck out eight batters. Carlos Suniaga came on in relief and after two strikeouts, gave up a single and a home run that made any comeback seem that much more improbable for the home team. Then the back end of the Daytona Bullpen happened. The bottom of the eighth went groundout, walk, walk, hit batter, walk, pitching change, walk, single, passed ball, walk, walk and before you knew it, six runs had crossed the plate for Fort Myers, and they had taken the lead 8-7. Warming up quickly, closer Denny Bentley slammed the door shut on the Tortugas with a one-two-three ninth inning on just eight pitches, including a three-pitch strikeout to end the game with authority. He picked up his seventh save of the season. Misael Urbina went 2-for-5 with a double and an RBI out of the leadoff spot. The Mighty Mussels had just three other hits as a team, but were able to take advantage of a bulk of their 12 walks in that eighth inning. Jeferson Morales, Aaron Sabato, and Ruben Santana each drew three of those walks. COMPLEX CHRONICLES FCL Twins 5, FCL Rays 7 Box Score The Twins fell behind early in this one but came back and took the lead 5-3 after the top of the sixth inning behind home runs from LaRon Smith and Malfrin Sosa. Luis Baez (2-for-5, R, 2B, K, SB) and Alexander Pena (2-for-4, R, RBI, BB, 2 K) collected half of the Twins eight hits. Kala’I Rosario added an RBI double. Sean Gilmartin started the game and pitched two innings. He allowed three runs (two earned) on five hits while striking out four. A couple of major leaguers were activated for rehab assignments with the St. Paul Saints, but it was a different slugger with major league experience who stole the show at CHS Field on Tuesday night. There were also several big innings from lineups across the system on the night, and even a no-hitter rookie leagues (that asterisk in the title is for a reason, but the scorebook says what the scorebook says!). TRANSACTIONS Catcher Mitch Garver was sent on a rehab assignment to the St. Paul Saints. Good to see him back on the field after his freaky injury. Jake Cave was also activated for a rehab assignment with the Saints. LHP Kody Funderburk and RHP Jordan Gore were promoted from Cedar Rapids to Wichita. LHP Aaron Rozek was assigned to the Mighty Mussels from the Wind Surge, and RHP Jason Garcia was placed on the 7-day injured list. Taking the place of the departing pitchers from Cedar Rapids were RHP Osiris German and RHP Louie Varland from Fort Myers. In addition to Rozek the Mighty Mussels also were assigned RHP Orlando Rodriguez. SAINTS SENTINEL Columbus 1, St. Paul 19 Box Score With Jake Cave, Mitch Garver, Brent Rooker, and Willians Astudillo in the lineup for the Saints on Tuesday, this one played out just like you might expect when putting a lineup of major leaguers out against one of minor leaguers. St. Paul bludgeoned Columbus pitching early with three runs in the first then four more in the third before exploding for 10 runs in the fourth. When they needed a hit, they got them, and big ones in bunches too. Cave led off the game with a homer and Rooker hit another blast in the first. Rooker and Mark Contreras each went yard in the third. Then Rooker again, and Jose Miranda took one out of the park in the big fourth inning. The lineup got multiple hits from Miranda (2-for-4, 2 R, 2B, HR, 3 RBI, 2 BB, K), Rooker (4-for-6, 4 R, 2B, 3 HR, 7 RBI, 2 K), Contreras (2-for-4, 2 R, HR, 2 RBI, 2 K), and JT Riddle (2-for-4, 2 R, 2B, 2 RBI). Cave and Rooker each scored four runs. As a team St. Paul was 9-for-13 (.692) with runners in scoring position and left only five men on base. In addition to their 14 hits and six walks, five hitters were hit by pitches leading to their runs outpacing hits for the game. Righthander Griffin Jax took the mound for the Saints and went the first five innings, working efficiently. He allowed one run (solo homer) on three hits. He did not walk or strike out a batter, and threw just 63 pitches with 40 going for strikes (63.5%). Reliever Juan Minaya came on for the sixth inning and finished the next three scoreless innings. He allowed three hits, one walk, and struck out four. Joe Harvey finished off the game with a scoreless ninth, allowing one hit and punching out two. WIND SURGE WISDOM Tulsa 7, Wichita 2 Box Score Wichita got on the board first in this one when Trey Cabbage clubbed his third home run of the season, a two run-shot in the second inning. But that was all the offense they would muster on the night as the lineup managed just two other hits on the game. They had only one at-bat with a runner in scoring position and left only two men on base for the game. There is not much you can if you never have the opportunities. Righthander Austin Schulfer got the start for the Wind Surge and went five solid innings. He allowed three earned runs on two hits and three walks, while striking out six. Zach Neff came on gave up three runs of his own in 1+ innings. He allowed four hits and struck out one. Jhonleider Salinas finished the game off for the Wind Surge with 1 1/3 scoreless innings. He walked one and struck out two. KERNELS NUGGETS Cedar Rapids 8, South Bend 5 Box Score The Kernels too, got on the board early and then often in a single inning on Tuesday as they put up three runs in the first then a five-spot in the fourth that put them ahead 8-1 at the time. The three runs in the first came courtesy of Seth Gray’s seventh home run of the season. The lineup got multiple hits from Gray (3-for-6, 2 R, HR, 3 RBI, K), Wander Javier (2-for-5, R, 2B, BB, 2 K), and Edouard Julien (2-for-5, R, 2 RBI, BB, 2 K). Julien’s 2-RBI single in the fourth inning capped the scoring for Cedar Rapids and he continues to lead the minors in walks while sporting a .475 on-base percentage across two levels. The eight runs were more than enough to pick up the win as the pitching staff held strong enough as South Bend attempted a comeback. Starter Cody Laweryson went the first four innings for the Kernels, allowing a single earned run on three hits and two walks while punching out six. Tyler Palm allowed two runs on two hits and a walk in his single inning. Ryan Shreve was credited the win after his two innings where he allowed one run on two hits and struck out two. Zach Featherstone pitched the final two innings, allowing a run of his own on one hit and two walks while striking out three. The Kernels improved to 35-26 on the year and are firmly in second place of the Midwest League West Division. MUSSEL MATTERS Jupiter 10, Fort Myers 12 Box Score Fort Myers jumped out to a beg early lead after an eight run second inning, but struggled to keep that lead for the rest of the game and it turned into a back-and-forth contest late. Willie Joe Garry Jr. got the scoring started in the second with a two-RBI single. Misael Urbina followed two batters later with a grand slam that made it 6-1. A Jeferson Morales double and Jesus Feliz single would plate the other two runs in the frame. Starter Brent Headrick went four innings in total, allowing five runs (three earned) on seven hits and three walks, while striking out six. Matthew Swain came out for the fifth inning but was not able to get out of it before being charged with four runs on three walks. He struck out one. With two in the fifth Carlos Suniaga was summoned and went the next 2 1/3 scoreless innings, keeping the Mighty Mussels within one going into the bottom of the seventh. They were able to tie it at nine thanks to an RBI single off the bat of Ruben Santana, but gave it right back in the top of the eighth. Righthander Bradley Hanner came into the game and gave up consecutive single to start the inning, that resulted in a run as the first hitter stole second and reached third on a throwing error. Now down 10-9, Fort Myers would not give up. Yunior Severino delivered an RBI sac fly in the bottom of the eighth after Aaron Sabato reached base on an error and moved to third on a double from Morales. Feliz then put them up by one with an RBI single and executed a double steal with Justin Washington for another run to make it 12-10 in favor of the home team. Back out front for the top of the ninth, the Mighty Mussels brought on Denny Bentley to close out the win. A one out walk and single made it a little interesting, but Bentley buckled down and struck out the final two hitters (and all three outs in the inning) to end the game and pick up his fifth save. In addition to Morales and Feliz, Washington (2-for-4, R, 3B, K, SB) and Santana (2-for-2, R, RBI, 3 BB, SB) also multiple hits on the game. COMPLEX CHRONICLES Game 1: FCL Braves 5, FCL Twins 1 Box Score The FCL Twins played a doubleheader with their Atlanta Braves counterpart on Tuesday afternoon, and they each picked up a victory. In game one the Twins were outhit 8-5 and were not able to mount any rallies in losing 5-1. Alexander Pena led the way with a 2-for-3 effort including a double. Kala’I Rosario picked up the only RBI. Starter John Stankiewicz went the first two innings, allowing one run on two hits and a walk while recording all of his outs via the strikeout (six total). Wilker Reyes went the next four innings and allowed three earned runs on six hits and two walks. Cole Bellair finished the game with an unearned run on two walks in the seventh, striking out one. Game 2: FCL Twins 8, FCL Braves 0 Box Score The Twins got back at the Braves in game two behind a no-hitter from their starting pitcher. The caveat here is even in the normally shortened 7-inning game of a doubleheader, only 5+ innings were completed in this one as lightning moved into the area. The Twins scored two in the first and six in the second to account for all their runs. Rosario had two more RBI in this one thanks to a double. Catcher LaRon Smith had three RBI and his second home run of the season. Pena (2-for-4, R, RBI) and Miguel Vallejo (2-for-2, R, 2 2B) had multiple hits. As a team they were 7-for-13 with runners in scoring position and left just six on base for the game. Pitcher Giovahniey German went five innings and walked just two while striking out four. Quite a performance for the 20-year-old in just his third game pitching in the states! Goes down as a no-hitter in the scorebook no matter who is reading it, congratulations! Minnesota Twins affiliates combined to hit twelve home runs on Tuesday night, and they came from all over the prospect spectrum. They led to a couple blowout wins and sent one game to extra innings in dramatic fashion courtesy of a single hitter. To find out who hit all those home runs and how the rest of your favorite Twins prospects competed on Tuesday night, keep reading! TRANSACTIONS The only transactions in the system on Tuesday were at the lower levels and consisted of: 3B Wander Valdez being assigned to the FCL Twins. SS Jesus Feliz being assigned to Fort Myers in a corresponding move. Then SS Keoni Cavaco was activated from the injured list and returned to action for the Mighty Mussels. Finally, Wichita infielder Peter Mooney decided to hang up the spikes and retire from baseball. SAINTS SENTINEL St. Paul 11, Iowa 1 Box Score The Saints blew this game open with a big sixth inning where they were handed a few extra outs. But Mark Contreras and Jimmy Kerrigan also hit back-to-back home runs in the inning to get it started. Contreras’ was a two-run shot after Willians Astudillo led off the inning with a single. The offense also added single runs in the third courtesy of a Keon Broxton homer (his third in his last four games) and in the fifth on an RBI single from JT Riddle. They tacked on three more in the eighth when Brent Rooker clubbed a two-RBI single off the top of the wall and Astudillo followed with an RBI groundout to make it 11-0. St. Paul also got a fantastic start from lefty Andrew Albers. He went six innings and scattered six hits and one walk. He allowed zero runs and struck out six. Ian Gibaut pitched a scoreless seventh, working around a couple of two-out baserunners. He allowed a hit, walk, and struck out two. Robinson Leyer pitched allowed a hit and walk in a scoreless eighth, striking out two. Joe Harvey finished the game for the Saints, allowing one run on a hit and three walks. He also struck out two. Drew Maggi (2-for-6, R, 2 RBI, K), Astudillo (2-for-5, R, RBI), and Contreras (2-for-4, 2 R, 2B, HR, 2 RBI, BB, K) each had multiple hits. The lineup got RBIs from seven of the hitters in their lineup on the game. WIND SURGE WISDOM NW Arkansas 10, Wichita 9 (10 innings) Box Score This one got interesting in the late innings as the Wind Surge and Naturals went back and forth with big hits to push this one to extra innings. Spencer Steer led off the game with his fourth home run for Cedar Rapids and 14th on the season. This made the score 3-1 and it would remain that way until the sixth. Wichita starter Bryan Sammons got roughed up for three runs in the first inning, but settled in well after that to finish five total frames without allowing any more. He surrendered three hits, walked two, and struck out two. NW Arkansas extended their lead to 5-1 in the top of the sixth against reliever Jhonleider Salinas who allowed three hits including two doubles. The Wind Surge closed the gap to 5-4 in the bottom half of the sixth as Trey Cabbage clobbered a three-run home run, then in the seventh Andrew Bechtold tied the game at five with a solo home run of his own. Onto the seventh reliever Calvin Faucher came on and worked around a walk to deliver a scoreless inning, but walked the first three batters of the eighth before Zach Neff was summoned to clean up the mess. A very tough assignment, but Neff had been nails in those situations so far on the season. Of course, I am alluding to the fact that streak did not continue. All three inherited runners came in to score and were charged to Faucher before Neff got out of the inning with Wichita now down 8-5. In the ninth Neff delivered a one-two-three inning and in between big blasts from the offense closed the gap for Wichita. It was Aaron Whitefield in the eighth who delivered a two-run home run after making an incredible catch in center field the prior half of the inning. Then in the ninth, Bechtold came through with his second home run of the game to tie it and send it to extras. With the extra runner starting on second base, Neff was back out for the tenth, but left a pitch up to the leadoff man and he cashed it in with a two-run homer that made it 10-8. He would retire the next three hitters and pitched a total of three innings, being charged with two runs (one earned) on one hit while striking out three. The Wind Surge were able to get the extra runner across in the bottom half of the inning thanks to a single from Roy Morales, but with Bechtold in the box looking to have an epic night, he went down looking on a pitch he knew he misjudged. Wichita outhit the Naturals 14-7 and had five home runs on the game, but could not get the luck to fall their way in the end. In addition to all those homers, Jermaine Palacios also finished 4-5 and scored two runs. KERNELS NUGGETS Peoria 2, Cedar Rapids 10 Box Score Cedar Rapids starter Ben Gross was solid in this one, finishing five innings to be in line for his third win of the season. He allowed two runs on three hits and two walks, while striking out two. He threw 70 pitches, with 50 of them going for strikes (71.4%). He finished his night in line for the win due to some big hits from his offense. Alex Isola crushed a three-run home run in the second and Jair Camargo followed with a three-run blast of his own in the fifth that made it 7-2. The Kernels offense padded the lead further in the sixth when Seth Gray drove in two with a single and Camargo another with a double to make it 10-2. That is where this one would end with Cedar Rapids outhitting Peoria 10-4 on the game. Isola (3-for-5, 2 R, 2B, HR, 3 RBI), Gray (3-for-4, R, 2 RBI, BB, SB), and Camargo (2-for-4, R, 2B, HR, 4 RBI, 2 K) did the bulk of the damage. On the relief pitching front, Ryan Shreve was called upon to pitch the middle innings and delivered a one-two-three inning in the sixth and scoreless seventh. He allowed one hit and struck out one. Owen Griffith finished the game with two perfect innings, striking out three in the process. MUSSEL MATTERS Fort Myers 6, St. Lucie 8 Box Score The Mighty Mussels and Mets traded blows in the early innings, with Fort Myers’ Will Holland answering St. Lucie’s run in the first with a solo home run in the top of the second. In the third inning the Mighty Mussels scored on a double steal and two-run home run off the bat of Yunior Severino accounting to give themselves a 4-1 lead. Then in the fourth, starter Denny Bentley was replaced with Bradley Hanner after allowing two batters to reach base. He walked all three hitters he faced, score two runs and leaving him responsible for the loaded bases. Juan Pichardo came on and walked another batter tying the game at four, but was able to coax a double play out of the next hitter to end the threat. In total Bentley pitched 3 1/3 innings allowing three runs on two hits and four walks along with striking out five. Pichardo pitched two total innings, running into trouble in the sixth. He was charged with four runs on three hits and three walks while striking out two. Carlos Suniaga came on in the middle of the sixth and got two quick outs to end any further threat with St. Lucie now leading Fort Myers 8-4. He would finish the game with 2 2/3 innings, allowing no runs on two hits while striking out four. Fort Myers closed the game to 8-6 in the eight on a single from Misael Urbina that scored two but were unable to push any more across in the ninth. Holland (2-for-5, 2 R, 2B, HR, RBI, K), Yunior Severino (2-for-4, R, 2B, HR, 2 RBI, BB, K), and Willie Joe Garry Jr. (2-for-3, R, BB, K, 4 SB) all had multiple hits. No. I love the attitude. Not even in the ballpark of least likeable Twins players, especially in an all-time sense. This is a massive overreaction.

*To his face* I'm in the camp that loves Donaldson's "fire" or "douchebaggery," whatever you want to call it. Giolito certainly had the "We won/they're in last place" parts of his comments correct, but not this part, IMO. I don't even think Donaldson was directing his comment at Giolito. It was toward his teammates referencing what he's been alluding to about foreign substances and pitchers basically the whole season. Will be interesting to hear what he says about it.

I had an issue with Giolito saying "talk $h*t" to my face" in his comments... He just clubbed a HR off you dude. No need for him to do anything else to your face.

Has been playing 3B primarily the last few seasons, but moves around a bit too (2B, 1B). If he continues to hit like this he's going to profile just fine as a third baseman with his defense, which is generally considered average (fielding and arm).

Omaha leads the midwest division by 6 games, and lead the league in batting average with 20 more home runs than anyone else. It's been their offense primarily, but they definitely are one of the top teams in Triple-A thus far.

This was a big part of what Miranda needed to work on to take next steps in his development. He had been quite a bit like Willians Astudillo, in swinging at everything. Didn't draw many walks and also didn't strike out much. But so far this year, he's definitely toned that down is on pace to easily set a career high in walks. The performance has certainly followed as he's adjusted this approach, his 16 home runs have already tied his career high, in 1/3 of the games. Wondering if I didn't move him up high enough in our midseason prospect re-rankings that will come out soon, hah ?

I would like to give a teaser for how each of the Minnesota Twins affiliates fared on Tuesday night, but there’s really only one game, or prospect, worth mentioning. A day before his birthday, Jose Miranda was promoted to the St. Paul Saints and he had a debut for the ages tonight at CHS Field. To find out just how ridiculous Jose Miranda was in his triple-A debut, keep reading!!! (I guess you can find out how the rest of the Twins prospects did on this night if you want, too…) TRANSACTIONS The Cedar Rapids Kernels placed 1B Gabe Snyder on the 7-day injured list with a right wrist sprain. RHP Zaquiel Puentes was assigned to Fort Myers from the Florida Complex League, and in a corresponding move LHP John Wilson was assigned to the FCL from the Mighty Mussels. SAINTS SENTINEL Omaha 4, St. Paul 15 Box Score Let’s talk about Jose Miranda. He was promoted to the St. Paul Saints yesterday, after crushing the double-A central league to the tune of a .345/.408/588 batting line. He led the league in runs, hits, home runs, RBI, and batting average. In addition to the holding the league’s traditional triple crown, his .996 OPS ranked third in the circuit. Today was also his birthday, turning 23 years old while making his triple-A debut. The Saints put him in the leadoff spot, but he should probably be bumped down a spot or two after this performance. Leading off the game for St. Paul in the bottom of the first, he worked a good at-bat and clubbed a 3-2 pitch for his first home run in triple-A, and fourteenth of the season. In his next at-bat he was chomping at the bit and swung at the first pitch (which he has been known for in the past), and it resulted in… a slow roller for an infield single (get ‘em any way you can!). Despite it being only the third inning, he came up for the third time with the bases loaded. He was grooved a fastball and did not miss, smashing his second home run of the game, this one of the grand slam variety. That made the game 8-2 at that point and there were still six more innings for Miranda to continue and flex his muscles. *SPOILER ALERT* He definitely kept flexing his muscles. He led off the bottom of the fifth with another solo blast, pushing the Saints lead to 10-2. Did I mention it’s his birthday?! In the sixth Miranda added a double down the line the opposite way, and would score on a Brent Rooker single that made the tally 15-2. He would get one more at-bat and though he grounded into a double-play, it was quite the scene to hear the fans at CHS Field give him a standing ovation as he trotted back to the dugout for the first time after leaving the batter’s box. He now leads triple-A with 3.333 OPS. Miranda was not the only Saints player to flex some muscle in this game either as his mystical aura granted strength to the rest of the lineup. Damek Tomscha also went yard sale twice, his seventh and eighth blasts of the season. Rooker and Mark Contreras each hit solo home runs in the fifth. As a team they collected 18 hits, with 11 of them going for extra-bases. Though it is kind of a side note at this point, there was also some good Saints pitching, as they set a team record with 16 strikeouts on the game with a bullpen outing. Yennier Cano started and went the first two innings, allowing one run on four hits and striking out two. Robinson Leyer allowed one run on two hits and a walk while striking out one. Kyle Barraclough recorded his fifth win of the season with two scoreless frames, allowing two hits, a walk, and striking out four. Ian Hamilton allowed a solo home run but struck out four in his two innings. Andrew Vasquez finished the final two frames, allowing one run on two hits and a walk. He struck out five. WIND SURGE WISDOM Wichita 3, Amarillo 4 Box Score The Wind Surge could have used a couple of Miranda’s RBI on this night, as their comeback fell short in the late innings. Jason Garcia made the start and went the first four innings. He allowed four runs (three earned) on five hits and three walks, while striking out six. The bullpen trio of Calvin Faucher, Zach Neff, and Ryan Mason gave Wichita a chance with four scoreless frames to end the game. They allowed just two hits and a walk, and struck out two amongst them. Down 4-0 going into the seventh, an error put a runner on base and recent minor league free agent signing D.J. Burt cashed him in with a two-run homer, his first with the Wind Surge. In the top of the ninth Jermaine Palacios got them within one with a solo shot, his tenth of the year, and Trey Cabbage followed with a single to put the tying run on base with two outs, but it was not meant to be as the next hitter went down swinging. KERNELS NUGGETS Cedar Rapids 1, Quad Cities 0 Box Score The Kernels and River Bandits renewed their rivalry on Tuesday night with a pitchers’ duel in Davenport, Iowa. For Cedar Rapids it was left-hander Tyler Watson who got the start, and he went the first four innings, keeping the Quad Cities lineup off-balance. He allowed just one hit and struck out four, lowering his ERA on the season to 2.45. He was efficient as well, throwing just 49 pitches, 37 for strikes (75.5%). Tyler Palm came on for the fifth and delivered a one-two-three inning. Zach Featherstone was next man up from the bullpen and went the next two plus innings. He allowed one hit, walked two, and struck out two. He came out to start the eighth but walked the first batter before being supplanted by Jordan Gore, who worked around that inherited runner and a single for a scoreless frame. Back out for the ninth and the closing opportunity, Gore finished the job to pick up his first save. The Kernels offense managed to put a run on the board in the fourth inning, taking advantage of a leadoff walk from Wander Javier. He would score on a DaShawn Keirsey single three batters later for the 1-0 lead that would turn out to be enough for the win. The teams combined for only six hits (three apiece) on the game, but the Kernels did draw seven walks. Javier was 1-for-3 with the run scored and drew a walk. Max Smith stole his second base of the year. Another top performing prospect in the organization so far this season also made his debut at a new league in this one, with Edouard Julien going 0-for-3 with a walk. MUSSEL MATTERS Bradenton 7, Fort Myers 2 Box Score The Mighty Mussels scored first in this one thanks to a Yunior Severino RBI double in the first, but that was all they would muster until the ninth and the Marauders kept adding runs in between. Carlos Suniaga gave up two runs on three hits and a walk in his lone inning. Juan Pichardo surrendered two runs on one hit, a homer, and a walk. He struck out one. Zaquiel Puentes made his FSL debut to finish the game and allowed two hits and struck out one. In the ninth Fort Myers was able to score a run after a leadoff walk from Kole McKinnon, who would score after an error on a groundball off the bat of Wander Valdez. As a team the Mighty Mussels managed just four hits, but were able to draw seven free passes. They just could not manufacture or piece together anything from those, as they went 0-for-8 with runners in scoring position. COMPLEX CHRONICLES FCL Twins 2, FCL Orioles Black 6 Box Score In their second game of their short season, the Florida Complex League (FCL) Twins were bludgeoned by the Orioles Black squad. Outhit 13-3, the game could have been a lot worse than the score of 6-2 but the Orioles had just one extra-base hit. The RBIs for the FCL Twins came from Frank Nigro on a single, and a bases loaded walk to Nelson Roberto in the fourth inning. Outfielder Emmanuel Rodriguez, a top-rated international prospect in 2019, was 0-for-3 with a walk and two strikeouts. Of note on the pitching front, was 2017 2nd round draft pick Landon Leach pitched for the first time in three seasons. Berrios has been durable. Buxton has not. The conversation ends there. Buxton is a glass cannon, Berrios is a thoroughbred. Buxton being worth over $20MIL while playing only 27 games this season is laughable. That's the absolute worst contract in baseball if you think about it like that. I absolutely love watching Buxton play, he's awesome. But that's the problem, we haven't got to watch him. Parts of 7 seasons now, 4 of them where he's been on the MLB roster throughout, and he's played in like 60% of the games in those 4 seasons. If you're making the decision between the two, it's Berrios by miles for me.

Awesome that you got to see the game! It is definitely a trip I'd like to make in the future. Miranda has definitely taken steps forward that you want to see this year (plate discipline), and the results are following. He will definitely get a bump soon keeping this up.
