  1. For goodness sake Zoll was talking today about how he hasn’t decided whether to tender Jeffers the QO. What more sample size do you need, Jeremy? The season is over. We know who is in the system and who the FAs are. Jeffers is the best option available, at a position of need, in a very thin FA crop. As Yoda once said “Do or do not. There is no try.” The Twins need results to back words.
  2. Twins FO/Jeremy Zoll - D+ Cycled through an endless amount of bullpen arms, many of which were not MLB caliber, in the first half of the season before settling on trades that netted competent, not great, arms. Wasted a valuable roster spot with a backup catcher that the manager found no reason to play for almost half a season. A roster spot that could have been given earlier to more deserving prospects with a future for the club. Appeared before the media as the head of an organization about as well and as often as J. Pohlad.
  3. The Twins need to create some redundancies in their lineup so they’re not one Buxton injury from going over a cliff. They need to address C, 1B, and another bat that can play OF/DH when Buck inevitably goes down again. Personally, I’m pessimistic already because they wasted a roster spot for about 1/3 of the season with a backup C who got like 15 ABs. The only thing I can fathom is they already locked into Jackson to be on the big league roster next year for reasons unapparent. The Twins didn’t think him good enough to play this year but didn’t want to lose him for next year. Makes a lot of sense…
  4. Getting five more wins than expectations and still missing the playoffs is like getting 55% instead of 50% on a test. Both scores are still an F. The Twins FO needs to commit to building a full team in the offseason instead of trying to build the plane in the air. Why some accept this level of planning from the organization is beyond me. The team needs a 1B, a C, and likely another rotational bat that can play the OF when Buck inevitably misses 50 games next year.
  5. The Twins were probably measuring whether they’d meet their medical plan deductible for the year and only scheduled after they had. It’s all you can eat for the rest of the season! /s
  6. KC and Milwaukee had payrolls around $150M this year and likely toward $160M next season. Those organizations had vastly different results but there’s little reason why the Twins couldn’t spend in the neighborhood of those franchises.
  7. Ty France would be a reasonable upgrade at 1B and would look like Mark McGwire compared to the guys they’ve been rolling out. He’s a UFA in the upcoming class.
  8. Lewis is a utility player at this point in his career. In my book, he’s not even the best utility player on the Twins, which is Clemens. Do the Twins even need another utility infielder or are they better off with someone like Kreidler filling that role? The Twins should concentrate on upgrading the 1B position instead of the weak revolving door they’ve been running since Mauer retired.
  9. I like Ty France at 1B in the alternative and the Twins could use one more SP to add some depth. I’d like to think Mick Abel will contribute next but I also wanted to think that SWR was going to help this year. The team needs some redundancies if it doesn’t want to run out of gas in the second half year after year. May I suggest Trevor Rogers as a LHP that the Twins could use for balance to many righties they roll out. Yes, I know these moves will run payroll up to the 140M-150M area. Gasp!
  10. The only way Lewis comes back next season is if the organization has failed to solve 1B. There is no more potential for him in Minnesota because he is what he is at this point.
  11. The Twins should make the QO to Jeffers. Sure, it’s a lot of money but it’s a good alternative to making a long term offer to an aging asset. Consider the overpay the penalty for failing to develop a reasonable alternative in a very weak developmental system. The Twins need two more bats better or comparable to Jeffers to compete next season. If you let him go then you need three and that’s just not going to happen given the history of this franchise.
  12. Realistically the Twins need at least three 2.5+ WAR players to be competitive. I suggest at least one SP and two bats - perhaps 1B and a rotational OF either of which could play DH sporadically. Likely none of these players is within the organization currently. There are too many articles discussing finding “a guy” to play a position with little consideration of the needs of organizational depth in a long season. The Twins will continue to flameout in August and September and wonder what happened if they continue to operate with barely having one guy per position and then throwing up their hands when normal injuries occur.
  13. Buxton cannot be counted on to give any team more than 100 games next year. That assumption is based on a HUGE sample size. Buxton should be moved into a rotational outfield/DH role to eke out as many starts as possible. The other issues in this piece are mostly drafting and development where I think the Twins need fresh blood at the top of the house making decisions. How many real #1 or #2 starters have the Twins drafted and developed in the last two decades? Certainly less than league average.
  14. I’m glad someone is finally willing to cut bait with Royce. His swing is too long and his plate discipline has largely disappeared. If you haven’t figured it out, the league has, which is to pitch him away, away, and further away and he’ll swing his away out of ABs. Now, the question is whether the FO can find a 1B with some pop rather than the pea shooters they waste cycling through at 1B.
  15. The Twins run a shoestring operation that one could argue would be successful if it weren’t for injuries or the occasional bad luck. The fact of the matter is there will ALWAYS be injuries and bad luck in a 162 game season and good teams have depth and redundancies to minimize those variables. You cannot give away almost 10 wins in the first half of the season with a minor league level bullpen and think that will make no difference when there are inevitable stumbles in the second half. Bad luck and injuries will happen but the Twins have done a poor job affecting the things they can control. Just remember that the Twins have won 90+ games only twice in the Target Field era while Milwaukee and Cleveland have topped 90 wins 8 times EACH in the same span. That’s on the organization.
  16. Only a couple of weeks ago I remember questioning why Roden was on the roster instead of Jenkins. I was educated as to why Roden was the better choice. Nice to see the Twins come around.
  17. So Buxton is injured again. Can they finally call up Jenkins or do they kick the can down the road because of “reasons?”
  18. The Twins are in the race because the American League is historically bad this year. If they had the same record last year they’d be 10 games out of the race. I like the Twins but we need perspective and if they miss the playoffs in a historically bad AL then they should look in the mirror and realize that they failed organizationally to give 100% from Opening Day. You don’t get to take half a season to build a bullpen without paying a price.
  19. Remember when Falvey was hired largely on the reputation of Cleveland drafting and developing pitching? That’s not to say that trading for young pitchers should get no credit, but Falvey had a large enough sample size to conclude he had zero to do with Cleveland’s success and was a lot more word salad than results.
  20. Honestly, Zoll’s explanation sounds like a litany of corporate speak to describe why they’re delaying Jenkins’s service time clock. Is there any empirical evidence that Roden is more deserving of MLB playing time than Jenkins?
  21. The season is a grind and there will be ups and downs. The competition has been strong as of late and softens considerably in a couple of weeks. I’m not worried about Kody falling off a cliff.
  22. The Field of Dreams game is a 3M draw in this day and age. The numbers were down because it wasn’t a very good game and the Twins are not a national draw. You swap the Twins out for the Cubs or the Brewers and you’re back around 3M. Baseball should consolidate some of its broadcast options but that’s a much broader issue.
  23. The Twins would rather waste a roster spot with a third catcher that they rarely play then promote a promising position player. This team has done a terrible job of developing talent and cares more about MLB service time chicanery than producing quality big leaguers. Ugh
  24. I’ll be the wet blanket here but the Twins haven’t hit a lick since the ASG. If you take out a three error game and a four error game by Twins opponents they’d be averaging 2 runs a game since the ASG and many of those opponents were bad. Walker Jenkins is the only top 7 2023 pick not to get promoted to the big leagues. It’s time for him to get promoted to The Show because this team needs a shot of adrenaline. Alex Jackson, it’s been real.
  25. Whether Zebby is in the BP or the rotation, he needs to develop an out pitch. He fills up the zone which is commendable but way too many long counts and solid contact even when ahead. Let’s work on that out pitch first.
