Hicks earned an opening day start by having the best ST out of the entire roster. You really would have started him in AAA and had Clete Thomas as the opening day CF? They did bat him lead off way too long and probably should have demoted him sooner but he's got skills, he should be at least OK at some point in the near future with a lot of upside.
I'd love them to sign Garza. Aside from Nolasco the rest of their projected rotation hasn't proven much lately, though still should be a decent improvement. I'd sign Drew too but I care a lot less about spending Pohlad money than most people. Good to see the FO shelling it out this offseason though, hopefully they keep it going.
Dozier is a solid 2B but with guys like Rosario and Polanco in the system it's hard to say who is 2B of the future but it's always nice to have options.
I don't think TR will change. Many of his supporters will justify that and use the Rays and A's as examples of winning without spending but the Twins are not them and talent costs money. If they're not committed to putting talent around Mauer why keep his huge salary on the payroll to continually lose 95+ games? The thought of lopping off another $25 million of payroll has to arouse Ryan at least a little bit. I thought Target field was supposed to make the Twins more competitive with the big market teams? They stink.
They could spend the money on 5 (or even 1 or 2) guys that give you a chance to win consistently and look at short term contracts to immediately improve any defensive positions. Depending on what they do with Mauer the only other position I'd say is locked down would be 2B so there's plenty of needs to throw money at. They're pretty crappy.
At whatever point they get rid of Doumit it makes sense to bring him up. I'd definately bring him up in September since he's on the 40 man and it doesn't pay to put Mauer behind the plate much more this year.
I know Liriano could be a train wreck at times but why would an organization in dire need of pitching let their most talented pitcher walk? Best wishes to Liriano, I'll always be a fan of his.
That he was/is our most big league ready SP prospect doesn't provide much optimism for 2014. I really thought he'd come up and immediately be our best pitcher, it puts into perspective the growing pains that prospects and young players are prone to and paints another bleak picture for next year. I wouldn't throw him too much more at this point and, again, hope for the best next season.
I'm just messing with you a little bit. I know for veterans it's next to nothing but I think young guys can win spots w strong ST showings. I don't see Rosario doing this but regardless, the Hicks situation was different especially with the trades, Mastro's injury and Joe Benson's lack of hitting.
So why do they have spring training then, why not just write in next year's lineups after the last game of the season, and who did earn the opening day CF spot if not Hicks?
I like the idea of trading Dozier for a legitimate MLB SP if possible. Rosario's ceiling is high enough to risk losing Dozier to fill a more needy position. Otherwise no need to rush him out of AAA.
Just giving a different perspective, we don't know he's a great coach without stronger results eirher. Without Mauer's stats the team BA is even sadder and we know Bruno didn't teach Mauer to hit. Trust me, I want Bruno to be successful but 1 guy in the lineup showing improvement isn't enough to convince me.
Before we give Bruno too much credit it's worth noting that the Twins have the 5th worst team BA in the MLB and their offense was supposed to be their strength going in to the year. Not that I think Bruno doesn't know hitting but I give much more credit to Dozier for making the adjustments.
Not really disagreeing just saying if he's healthy then he should be ready or close to it and if the Twins can win more games with him than without him that should matter at least a little bit...unless they're on a course for another 90 losses
Obviously if his shoulder is an issue that changes things but if it's not and their pitching isn't vastly improved then he should have good enough stuff to crack the rotation at point next year.
From what Ive seen Santana is not a sure thing that I like to believe Arcia, Sano, Buxton, & Rosario are but he's very athletic with a high ceiling and lots of talent, hopefully he gets there and is not a bust.
Even if Sano dominates AAA for a couple months he'll still have growing pains and needs for adjustments once in the bigs. Like hiring or promoting someone for a job you don't expect them to start killing it on their first day. Not everyone needs AAA experience although I'm all for him starting '14 in Rochester though mostly for team control reasons.
I think we know what Plouffe has at this point. .230 hitter with potential to hit 20 HR has a poor glove and has shown little to no improvement over the last 3 years. I don't hate him but don't think he's vital to Twins' future either.
Devries, Bernier, Thomas, and Ramirez are a few guys that could potentially clear waivers but I do see the issue there. I'd also be interested to see what we have in Romero but unfortunately he's not on the 40 man either.
I thought Hicks and Arcia should have got Sept call ups last year as a reward for strong minor league seasons. Hicks Sano comparisons are irrelevant because Sano is a way more highly touted prospect than Hicks ever was and a top 3 in all of baseball. My vote is call him up in Sept and start him in AAA next year. This was supposed to be the year Plouffe took the starting 3B job and ran with it and that didn't happen so I don't have a problem with him losing meaningless at bats to Sano come September.
