  1. Well, I apologize then. The original post mentioned that the Twins had turned over more than 25% of the 40 man roster this off season. They did this while leaving the feeling like they had done very little (no trades, Castro and Belisle signings) With today's moves, Pat Light is the 12th person removed from the Twins 40 man roster since the season ended. Spy cake indicated that it seemed most teams had a high number of moves every off season so I looked at what teams have done to their 40 man rosters this off season. How many players have various teams removed from their 40 man roster since the WS? My ramblings were a quick look at 5 random teams and then the rest of our division. Now to bed...
  2. This sentence sparked a question In my head so I thought I would do some research. The first 4 teams I looked at actually averaged 19 guys off the 40 man roster. Of course some of these were claimed/waived/sent to minors and thos teams also averaged 4 guys traded off the 40 man. The 5th team had 6 and one of those was a trade. After the fifth team I decided to look in our division. Cleveland was the only one to reach the 10 threshold so we have had the most 40 man change in the division. The royals had only 7 and 3 of those were traded away. It's too much work for this tired guy to look at more teams. The couch is calling...
  3. Whoops, yeah, my bad but no. He was waived by the Orioles and claimed by the Braves. He cleared waivers with them and was sent down.
  4. I got my list started here: http://www.rosterresource.com/mlb-minnesota-twins/ At the bottom are the off season roster moves but I also find the new depth chart intriguing, especially the starting rotation.
  5. In an off season filled with waiting for moves and questions about why they have not done more the local club has jettisoned 25% of their 40 man roster. With the DFA of Byung Ho Park I asked myself where they all are now so I made a list Logan Schafer signed an MiLB contract with the Orioles Tommy Milone signed with the Brewers for 1.25 million Pat Dean will play for the Kia Tigers for 900K Andrew Albers signed another MiLB contract, this time with Atlanta James Beresfrd is a free agent ABW- landed in the Brewers MiLB system Trevor Plouffe signed with the A's for 5.25 million Kurt Suzuki is with Atlanta for 1.5 million with another million in incentives Juan Centeno signed an MiLB contract with the Astros Yorman Landa passed away after a car accident 8 days after his release Byung Ho Park-TBD With so few signings and no trades it has felt so quiet but our 40 man has a lot of changes. Much of that is addition by subtraction. One trend that sticks out to me is big power with lots of strike outs has not impressed Falvey/Lavine. The other trend I see is good defensive metrics for catchers has the eyes of the new brass twinkling.
  6. I like our position at catcher better than any year since Mauer went down. Not having a backup plan for what became Mauer's catching demise was a huge organizational mistake. I like this year having Castro as the starter and Murphy as the backup with Garver on his heals. If Murphy stumbles, Garver comes in. If both stumble we have Chris Gimenez. If both do well, we have someone to trade away mid season.
  7. This is unrealistic. There are 8 positions listed lumping all the OF as one and having Pitchers in SP or RP roles. 8x10 is 80. 80/30 is 2 and 2/3. One is disappointing but 2-3 is the expected range. Top 100 list would be 3-4...
  8. Law of averages would say that you only have 2-3 guys (or somewhere around 2 and 2/3 to be more precise) on these lists for any one team. We have one so we are one and 2/3rds players under average? Im not too bothered by that especially if next year we have 3-4 and /or last year we had more than our share.
  9. All four of the pitchers have good seasons? I guess it's possible but that is hoping for a lot. I just hope 3 of them do and we will be a much improved team. In fact if two improve and Santana only regresses a little, we will be a much improved team. One could validly say if 4 of your list improve while Santana and Dozier only regress mildly, we could have an enjoyable season.
  10. I completely get this. I am disappointed but have nothing specific I can point to and say "that should have been different". I am actually really big on our new catcher signing hoping a better receiver can be the on field pitching coach these young pitchers need. I wanted a SS signed. ANYONE that could be a defensive upgrade. I REALLY hoped they did not sign one of the free agent SP's. We have enough mid-rotation, veteran SP's. I'm glad that did not happen. I hoped Santana and/or Dozier could be flipped for High End MiLB SP talent. I didn't need/want MLB ready but it needed to be a fair trade for a potential 1-2 SP plus other prospects. I wanted a better 4th/5th outfielder signed. I guess that could have happened but I don't know what $ numbers were offered and rejected. Ok, heres the move I AM disappointed in, DSan needs to be cut loose. IF he makes the 25 man roster.... I don't even know what to say about that.... Just holy wow, he's still here? So, I couldn't say a lot of things should have been different but it was disappointing especially after the promising start of a quick Catcher signing and a couple of necessary cuts.
  11. So do we expect our team to improve without changing? Lets examine the roster and ask ourselves if they will do better or worse in 2017 vs 2016 or stay about the same. Here are my predictions WORSE in 2017: Ervin Santana Brandon Kintzler Brian Dozier Robbie Grossman Do I have to explain any of these predictions? Stay About the Same: Buddy Boshers Ryan O'Rourke Ryan Pressly Michael Tonkin Eduardo Escobar Joe Mauer Danny Santana Max Kepler For most of these, I think we know who they are and what we will get. Kepler will be a sophmore with ups and downs. I am not expecting him to perform like a veteran yet. I expect the big improvement to come in 2018. Expecting BETTER things than what we saw: Jose Berrios Tyler Duffey Kyle Gibson Phil Hughes Pat Light Trevor May Glen Perkins Hector Santiago John Ryan Murphy Daniel Palka Jorge Polanco Miguel Sano Kennys Vargas Byron Buxton Eddie Rosario Byung Ho Park Most of these it cannot get much worse than it was and I am confident it will get better if they make the team. For some of them it is a big if. Hard to improve if you don't make the team... So just by looking at these lists, doing nothing this off season probably means an improved team even before the minor league bull pen improvements arrive. "Playoffs? Who's talking playoffs? Were just trying to win a(some) game(s)"
  12. Why not just simply track number of pitches? That with K vs B rate, and Balls in Play give a much better picture of a pitcher than innings. I have wondered why pitchers were measured by innings instead of pitches for many years going back to the 80s and 90s. It's like tracking Wins which is punishing good pitchers on bad teams. When the guy throws a 25 pitch inning because of 2 errors behind him, its Not his fault he didn't get into the 8th inning...
  13. Had a great time. Brought my friend Norm Peterson who quickly became a crowd favorite just for the sake of his name (and winning at rock paper scissors). His interest in TD took a sharp uptick. Thanks for making him feel welcomed! Jack really is just an every day geek like most of us (except he likes the Packers, BOOO!!) He was approachable after his time on stage and Great choice of guests LaTroy was awesome. Too cool for most of us to hang out with in the real world but for a night we were with the cool guy. (Boy did the ladies heads follow him everywhere he went...) And, Bonnes, you married over your head, good for you! (Trust me, I out kicked my coverage as well!) Tell the Mrs. I enjoyed chatting with her between waves of people coming in the door.
  14. Has anyone else noticed that in an organization where we have been worried about pitching development the new bosses (who are known to be strong on that side) have yet to put in place our minor league pitching coaches while we know most of the hitting coaches? Interesting...
  15. This article is another example of why we need something more than a "like" button...Lets bring back the "(insert name) Would like to buy (Insert name) A steak" button.
  16. Topic Missed: The Grass was not greener on the other side Falvey and Lavine fail to make improvements to the organization as a whole. The Twins lose all sense of identity they had not already lost with nothing positive to replace it and the death spiral leads to contraction. Target field sits empty for three years until a failing Florida team is relocated to "Greener Pastures"
  17. I was really excited to go watch Palacios play in CR last year and was disappointed by his bat. I was starting to get excited about how his bat was picking up and then he got injured. I do not see him as ready for FM and think he needs to start in CR but hope he can thrive early (Cold and all) and get himself to FM by mid-season. I also enjoyed Theofanopolous at CR. I hope we found a diamond in the rough there. (I also enjoy seeing his name wrap around the whole back of his Jersey) I also have been rooting for Rainis Silva. In 1990, I spent my summer in Barquisimeto and a neighboring suburb Cabudare. I have a special place in my heart for the two Venezuelan cities and would love to see someone in a Twins Uniform from there. I did not see any baseball there though...Pretty crazy about their soccer in Barquisimeto!
  18. How does everyone feel about Joe Smith? http://www.mlbtraderumors.com/minnesota-twins http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/s/smithjo05.shtml
  19. We had a bad team. We decided the front office did a poor job and brought back TR to run the same old system. We were still bad so we decided we needed new players. Team did not get better. We blamed the coaches and went out and got new coaches. We had a one year improvement. And the team went back down in 2016. We decided to go with a whole new system. :shoot: The new system (at least how I saw it advertised when we hired Levine and Falvey) includes how we measure pitching and address pitchers in the minors. This includes new methods in both analytics and instruction from Rookie ball to AAA and even on the MLB club. None of those changes can be measured in the off season and won't be measurable until we are well into this upcoming season. Player evaluations therefore should not be based on how they used to do but on how they respond to the new systems. They should reassess talent, talent acquisition and talent development top to bottom and then jettison the garbage. This is not the type of makeover that happens in two months and unfortunately, I do not see it happening in less than 2 years but hopefully the product on the field is impacted in the next 6 months.
  20. Interested. Might have a friend that is interested as well.
  21. RIP DozierTradeThreads. My heart is heavy, but in your memory I promise to push on.
  22. I was disappointed that the podcast ended mid sentence...
  23. Harrison and Michael in the same post:36-40. Ouch, bad draft. 2 guys with high hopes on the verge of washing out in the same year. On Davis, I would be surprised to see him start in FM. I see him more as a mid-season promotion but based on who they have in FM, maybe they do move him aggressively... Otherwise, I agree 100% with the rest of your 36-40 assessments.
  24. Looking at draft prospects 30+, no pitcher excites me. We need a top of the rotation pitcher which means I need Greene or Faedo in this draft. Greene is in High School and is all projection and hope. Faedo has shown the skills for 3 years of college and is expected to be top of the rotation talent with two pitches rated 60 and 55 command. I am going with him #1 overall. At #35 I would dream of Nick Allen falling to me but realistically (and following your rules of #30+) I am probably picking Ricardo De La Torre. Hey, I like Puerto Rico, don't you? I am picking him instead of a pitcher because the pitcher I want is ranked below him. At #37, I am taking Shane Baz. His "upside" is front line starter. We don't need more back of the rotation starters. (see: too many of these pitchers projections) If I am going to risk a pick on a HS prospect I would rather do it at 37 than 1. Too much risk of "wasting" a #1 on a HS starting pitcher. I can risk pick #37 when Faedo is already in the fold.
