  1. What do you think is the median, to date earnings for a 24 year old? Would you say "only" $1.35 million is anywhere close to extreme poverty?
  2. Exactly. It just doesn't make any logical sense for someone to inject ped's into someone who doesn't want them. What is the end game? If they make it big, you are going to tell them, "surprise! I've been secretly injecting you with illegal and potentially dangerous drugs this whole time!" I can't imagine anyone is delusional enough to think that is going to end well. And good luck finding work after pulling a stunt like that. Really, the only explanation that makes any logical sense, is that Polanco wanted him to inject ped's. Not to say that nonsensical, illogical things never happen, so it's not 100%. But it's really, really close.
  3. But there aren't enough players in the world for every team to have 25 players that are good enough to play every day. If you are lucky enough to have the luxury of a bench player who is good enough to be an everyday player, you probably won't have that guy for long. He'll go somewhere where he can play everyday.
  4. Not really though. "I'm sorry for the situation, but it wasn't my fault", isn't really taking responsibility. "I screwed up. I have nobody to blame but myself. I'm human, I made a mistake. I'll never let it happen again, and will forever work to reestablish my character." That's what taking responsibility would sound like to me.
  5. But isn't it possible that the peer(s) he's cheating out of a job/ money are also from a poor nation? And as someone else said, he may have been dirt poor at one point, but he's not now. From his bonus and salaries, he's already made as much money as I'll make in my lifetime.
  6. If those things are true, then why would anyone trade anything decent for him?
  7. I can't believe some people think these grown adults need to be babysat by teams, and that the teams should be jointly liable for not babysitting them 24/7. These are grown adults, not little kids. Seems patronizing to all players to suggest they aren't capable of the responsibility of their own behavior. Do you feel the same way about all jobs, or just athletes?
  8. I would guess that most of us have had the opportunity to cheat or lie to gain an advantage over another employee or student at some point in our lives. So, I disagree that none of us have been in the same position.
  9. Isn't the punishment a set number of games? How do they target minorities with their punishment? The only thing I agree with here is that 80 games for juicing is stupid. That is far too light, IMO. That's not really enough to deter anyone when the reward for getting away with it is tens to hundreds of millions of dollars.
  10. Vargas is from Puerto Rico. He was signed as an undrafted 18 year old.
  11. Not that I agree, but selling out allows even balls that aren't perfectly squared up to clear the fence. Sure, when he gets a hold of one, it should be out even at 85%, but he won't always get all of it every time.
  12. I'd prefer a higher OBP that high in the lineup. I think Rosario is more suited for the 5 or 6 spot.
  13. I've defended the Kinley selection, but I wouldn't want them to trade to keep him. The guy is 27 years old. If he's not ready now, more time in the minors is unlikely to help. Just send him back if he's not ready.
  14. I'll never understand why people pay attention, at all, to stats from practice games.
  15. I would guess that Berrios would rather have the honor of starting a game in his home territory of Puerto Rico (though I don't know for sure), which is why he won't start opening day.
  16. The Twins have upwards of $80 million coming off the books after this season. They can afford Lynn, if he's good enough that they want him back.
  17. Fair enough. I don't agree though. I think the casual fan might grumble if he's let go, but in the end it will be wins and losses that determine how much of their money the team actually gets. I'm also not sure where the player vs. owner part of your response comes from. The idea, if Joe is let go, would be to allocate that money and roster spot towards different players, not for the owner to pocket it.
  18. But even if he is finally better, doesn't the aging curve at some point negate some of that? Not saying improvement isn't on the spectrum of possibilities, but you seem too feel it's practically inevitable.
  19. Jimmer, do you have any specific reasons you feel so strongly that Mauer will improve in 2018? Or just a feeling?
  20. Logan Morrison was worth 26.3 million last year. How much did he sign for?
  21. Wasn't meant to be a comp. I'm just curious if it's common for any milb pitcher to average that many innings? I don't know. I just looked at Kershaw because there is zero doubt he's a great pitcher. I'm genuinely curious how often milb pitchers average 6+ per start.
  22. How is deciding to move on from Mauer "treating him poorly"?
  23. Is it common for minor league pitchers to average that many innings though? I checked Kershaw, since he's arguably the best pitcher in baseball, and he never averaged 6 IP or more in the minors in any season.
  24. He averaged exactly 6 IP per start in 2016. Unless my math isn't what it used to be. 22 starts, 132 IP.
